I'd be happy to send a birthday greeting, but that address pops up as not having a DNS entry. Maybe your server is down?

Bo Diddley?"one of the founding fathers of rock 'n' roll."?

why post that here?...*sigh*...there are MANY musicians who have birthdays today. Just because you LIKE Bo Diddley does not mean it belongs here...I have worked VERY hard to not react to posts about R&R, singer-songwriters, pop stars...C & W, etc..for a year now....but, criminy!

(not that it did any good to get that off my chest, it will just keep happening in an open site...I feel like King Canute trying to sweep back the waves on the beach....but at least I vented a bit)

The top of the page says "a magazine dedicated to blues and folk music" There ain't a lot of blues here but I would sure include Bo Diddley.

Saw him in a smoky basement nightclub about 17 years ago. For me he still personifies the concept of rock and roll. Visceral, driving, soulful, and raw. They say its the music of youthful rebellion, but in the hands of an ageless master like Bo Diddley, its becomes the music of revolution.

Bill, remember King Knute (Canute) was trying to show his advisors and flunkies that a man (or a king) COULDN'T hold back the tide.
Still and all, I don't understand your objection to Bo Diddly. Surely he's a hugely influencial figure in both blues and (real) rock and roll. Usually birthday threads for famous people turn into discussions of that person's work. On the other hand, perhaps it's your effort that's kept mentions of Ani DiFranco (or perhaps just the age of mudcatters) to a bare minimum.
Rick

They called Bo Diddley Rock n Roll on the white stations and Blues or Rhythm and Blues on the black stations. He crossed over from race records to the top forty. Don't we ever get tired of disputing what is and what ain't folk music or 'real' blues? Aren't you sick of arguing what is and what ain't ok on the Mudcat?

Happy Birthday Bo Diddley you white/black/blues/rock/pop/folk/performer
welcome to the Mudcat.

Regards, Fortunato

Well, Father William has never been a big fan of the blues, either - he's a dyed-in-the-wool Scots-Irish-Anglophile whose idea of heaven is Jeannie Robertson. As our local official Purist Snob (he even has a T-shirt proclaiming this), he is known (and teased)for his lack of tolerance for "other" forms of music intruding on HIS turf. His wife, Ferrara, and I once enjoyed getting his dander up by singing "Rocky Racoon" at an Open Sing where the topic was "Passion".

Me, I think Bo Diddley is one of the greatest musical influences of the past 45 years, and his brand of electrified R&B rose out of a long blues tradition. But then, I like The Albion Band doing electric Morris tunes, too - definitely a no-no in BillD's books!

not eclectic enough for electric.....(but I do listen to some blues)...

(one thing about it, I barely have time to listen to all the folk/trad I want, along with some classical and a few odds & ends of other stuff...how do all you eclectic people DO it?)

Just load the cd player and start them playing! That is if you have one. Now, Bill, you did send the hamsters out to pasture and you really did get a new 'pewter, right?**BG**

Went looking. Take heart! There are high school students who've made a ncie little website with bios of famous writers and musicians of Mississippi! What foolwo is one of those bios on Bo. Seems he won the Lifetime Achievement award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation at the Seventh Annual Pioneer Awards in 1996.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Biography of Bo Diddley
by Amanda Johnson (SHS)
Bo Diddley was born on December 30, 1928, in McComb, Mississippi, in Pike County. Bo Diddley's legal name was Ellas McDaniel, but he was born Otha Ellas Bates. Bo was adopted by his mother's cousin Gussie McDaniel and a man named Bates. When he was a child, Bo studied violin and taught himself how to play a guitar. When he was a young adult, Bo Diddley earned money performing odd jobs in construction and in boxing semi-pro. He also would spend much of his spare time playing music on the streets for extra money.
In his early performances (1945-1951) he was the lead singer in a Washboard Trio. He had married Ethel Mae Smith in 1946, and they had two children. They later got divorced , and he remarried a lady named Kay. There were two children from this marriage also.
Bo Diddley signed with the Chess/Checker Records in 1955 and remained with them until 1974. In 1955 he recorded his first hit song "'I'm a Man, " which made it to the number two spot on the charts. He got the stage name Bo Diddley from a one-stringed African guitar. One of the things that he said he hated most was that many record companies would use white artists to cover songs by black groups. The companies would do this "...in order for the music to have a so-called 'wider appeal.'" This practice was common throughout the '50s and '60s, but Diddley did not like it. This is what Mr. Diddley had to say about the situation while in the hospital for a pulled muscle in his right leg: "I think this is very wrong. We have to get away from that in this country. This country is not about that. We have to quit looking at each other's skin and give credit for what a man does. I'm not prejudiced against anybody. That's not my bag. But I just don't like the guys that handle my white brothers. They're the ones that are hogging up the money. [They say] 'We can't make this much money with the brother, so let's pick the pea pickers out here.' They'll promote them and pack the house. But they ain't gonna spend that money on you. I've seen this and it hurts. It really hurts."
Bo Diddley has been a well -respected artist and has even had performances for presidents. He played a concert for the President and Jackie Kennedy. He also played at t the Inaugural gala in Washington D. C. for President Bush, and he performed at the Democratic National Convention for Bill Clinton. Some of his other accomplishments include being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987; having a star in the sidewalk on the Hollywood Hall of Fame in 1989; and receiving the Lifetime Achievement award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation at the Seventh Annual Pioneer Awards in 1996. Road Runner Live by Diddley was released by Mastertone on February 26, 1999.
Bo Diddley has had a long lasting career that spans over five decades. His career began in the early forties and his personality and stage presence have made him a popular entertainer yet today. His popularity is world-wide. He is still performing concerts in places like Robinsonville, Mississippi, and Tokyo, Japan. Today he lives in Archer, Florida.

Singin' "Rocky Racoon"? Hoo boy! Bill I want one of those t-shirts! Actually, my "listenin' to everything" days are done. I've become VERY narrow in what I listen to these days. Generally it's recordings of old time country (Delmores', string bands, etc. classical, (North) American ized ballads, and VERY occasional contemporary songwriters) Doesn't appear to stop me from pontificating on everything else though.
Rick

I wouldn't lose Bo out of my collection, either. OK that square guitar is horrible and the "shave and a haircut, two bits" riff is overdone at times but there's a lot of exiting stuff at the R&B end of the blues in there as well.

In my opinion anyone who recorded on the Chess Label deserves mention on a Blues site.

I thought I had diverse musical tastes until I met Mr. Fielding, he puts me to shame. But all forms of music are so closely linked that we are bound to have discussions on people like Django, Zappa, Willie Nelson, Chuck Berry, Rachmoninov, etc., etc, etc. I have been introduced to some wonderful music by checking out artists who I had never heard on the recommendation of Mudcatters whose opinions I respect.

Here, here Steve.

It is through connections that music grows not through labels and distinctions. If you don't want a musical enema, you better plop yourself down on the Mudcat.

Rick, the only other person who had a "Purist Snob" t-shirt was Joe Wilson of the National Folk Festival...he practically DEMANDED one, and no one needed it more......(it had the dog listening to the Victorola on it, and "Purist Snob" in big glitter letters)...but since I no longer have any idea where to find those transfers...*sigh*...but YOU can have one made, if you want- you don't even have to pay me royalties for the idea..*grin*
