For the world's strongest beer you'd need to turn to Scotland, with one called "Snake Venom" said to be 65 ABV.

I wouldn't advise it though.

I got that wrong - I checked and the actual ABV is apparently 67.5...

You Canadians need better antifreeze.

Canadian Antifreeze? Canada's whisky families perfected the production of it during the USA Prohibition. A lot of surplus (and tasty) antifreeze is exported yearly.

Hey, Jeri. Can't believe you don't have a plug-in. Sheeseh, gal, your car has to be from Florida or California. Cold is cold. Gotta keep your oil heated. (Good blues song in there :-) )

Kendall, I went to a re-enactment of The Battle of the Chateauguay. By today's standards it was stupid.

PS: I'll be sending you a song you'll like. Check your e-mail. Written by Eddy Lawrence.

I don't know anybody with a plug-in, although there have to be people who have them. I'm looking on line, but I think my mother's use of a light bulb made sense. Except the curly bulbs don't give off that much warmth. Reminds me to go look for incandescents tomorrow so I can hoard 'em.

Well, the US invaded Canada back around 1865, only it wasn't the US but some Fenians who wanted to capture Canada and trade it to the British for Ireland.

I doubt that the Brits would have gone for that deal -- Ireland usually has a better climate than Canada and it's much closer. Those are the real reasons they sorta cut Canada loose in the first place.

And I doubt that anyone in the Northeast needs more Canadian cold and snow right now....

Jeri, when I lived in RI my then-husband installed a plug-in for my car. (His truck lived in our garage; my car lived in our carport.) It worked beautifully--if I remembered to plug it in when the forecast predicted extreme cold. And I rarely forgot. This was before the internet. He ordered it from some automotive company's catalog.

Block heaters are standard quip up here.

If you want a diesel to start in the cold, a block heater is a must.

Amazon & ebay are loaded with different types... which I had to investigate because my little tractor needed a smaller size than the local stores carried.

I was referring to the battle of Quebec and Benedict Arnold. Then there was that unpleasantness in the war of 1812.

I've seen many cold winters here, but never needed a block heater.

Anchorage area and interior Alaska drivers are routinely reminded to 'plug in at 20' although, I believe, it is urged more to help reduce fuel emissions than for ease of starting. Juneau, in southeast Alaska, has no such legal requirement. Although it can go much lower, our wintertime temperatures tend to be around 20F and UP. Currently, for instance, it is 34 degrees.

I think southeastern Alaska is at about the same latitude as New York City.

Use a block heater. Simple... a few pennies for the electric power will add many more miles ($) to the life of the vehicle engine.

Since most of the wear on an auto engine is during warm-up, a block heater can surely help reduce wear and extend engine life for cold (at home) start ups (even in moderatly cold climates).

I don't have a block heater (since is it normally does not stay really cold for long in my local), but use synthetic oil - versus dinosaur oil - which helps lubrication during cold start-up. (A mechanic once told me to avoid changing to synthetic after your vehicle has reached 80 to 100 km. He indicated the synthetic detergents are better, and could break up carbon and other deposits, which could potentially lead to engine damage).

This site has some useful information on motor oils.
