State Department Concludes Minimal Impact for Keystone Pipe

Report: Keystone pipeline would have minimal environmental impact

A long-delayed environmental report from the U.S. State Department could remove a major hurdle for a controversial oil pipeline from Canada to the Texas Gulf Coast.

By Michael O'Brien, NBC News

A new State Department report on the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline finds that the project would have a minimal impact on the environment, an assessment likely to increase pressure on the White House to approve it. But the report sets no deadline for doing so.
Given this evaluation of environmental impact, President Barack Obama and his administration will face increased pressure to approve the project, which enjoys widespread support among Republicans, and some measure of support among Democrats and allies of the administration, like labor unions.

The proposed pipeline would carry crude derived from oil sands in Canada to refineries in the United States.

... See complete article at the link.

The complete US State Department report is at findings by the new State Department report. The report is in 11 "Volumes," each divided into multiple subsections, so a complete report requires saving (right click - save target as) 94 separate PDF documents, assuming I counted them correctly. (Numbers larger than Π/2 sometimes confuse me.)

The downloads are at least numbered consecutively from 221137.pdf through 221252.pdf, but with some numbers missing, suggesting that sections disagreeing with the conclusion they were told to get were omitted - as usual.

An additional puzzle is why the "map" of the pipeline on the cover sheet for each volume shows the pipeline ending at the south border of Nebraska, leaving another three states it must cross to reach the refineries on the Texas coast. Maybe Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas were omitted from the impact analysis.

Since the entire report is only 7,156 pages, I'm sure all our Congressional representatives read it all before commenting, although their lips must be really tired by now and they may not be able to talk (or shouldn't) for a while.

John

"The proposed pipeline would carry crude derived from oil sands in Canada to refineries in the United States."

Ahhhh... nope. Can you say snow job? If anyone thinks for a half a sceond that such is the plan, they need to do a bit more research. Most of this crude oil/gas is gonna end up being shipped elsewhere. Mainly to China. Secondly to Europe.

They won't be shipping crude oil through Texas to foreign countries. They are shipping diesel at present. I would expect that to increase and the price of fuel distributed to the US from Texas to decrease relative to fuel in the western US east of the Rockies.

It's a game. Can the Chinese get a pipeline to the BC coast or the Gulf Coast or both? They will get at least one on accounta they BOUGHT a buncha Canuck tarsands and they have contracts, signed by our government that GIVE THEM THE RIGHT TO IGNORE ANY FUTURE ENVIRONMENTAL REGULATOIONS ENACTED. And they appear to be buying you Yanks, slowly but surely. Good news for Walmart eh shoppers?

Where the fuck is Pierre Elliot Trudeau when ya need him REAL bad? Oh, Justin is in the wings but I dunno if he can face these bastards down because the corruption in our government, in our political parties, in our judciary and in our beloved Royal Canadian Mounted is at a level that sickens. I am so pissed off, I just might write a god damned letter!

How about "They won't be shipping crude oil through Texas to foreign countries." until the overcapacity of the coastal Texas is exhausted.

To get things in perspective, before you start ranting, why not try a little experiment.

Get a map and pick a point at random.

Find the pipeline nearest that spot and pitch a tent there for a period of time, say a month, or just a weekend of you can't spare a month. Now observe and record all of the pollution that the pipeline produces and comment on its effect on the environment.

Then, go out of your house and find the nearest main road and repeat the experiment to observe the pollution there.

You see, however oil is transported, almost all of it reaches its destination safely. It is then that the end user that turns it into pollution.

If you want to stop oil polluting the environment, then stop using it.

Lets quit the fiddling and get her built.
The pipeline benefits not only Canada but will pick up crude from the northern states on its route, where plan B is for tank car shipment from these new areas of production.
