Subject: RE: BS: Schenectady Burns! Blame Canada! From: MMario Date: 08 Feb 14 - 08:04 AM Schenectady was under English rule at the time; The attack came out of New France to the North... if only the snowmen guarding the gates had fought back! But all evidence shows their resistance melted in moments. |
Subject: RE: BS: Schenectady Burns! Blame Canada! From: GUEST,Ed T Date: 08 Feb 14 - 09:37 AM Though, I suspect there are different versions, below is my understanding of the events. In 1689 France and England was at war. English colonists in New York heard the news first and convinced their Iroquois allies to attack the French. Most French colonies were unfortified. 1,500 Iroquois attacked Lachine near Montreal, which became known as the Lachine massacre. Of the 375 inhabitants, 24 were killed and 76 others were taken prisoner. Fifty-six of the 77 buildings were razed to the ground. following the Lachine Massacre, France ordered a retaliatory attack on the Albany in the British colony of New York. This war, the first in the British and French colonies, would come to be known as King William's War. In February 1690 France, began an invasion. One hundred and sixteen militiamen and 96 Indian allies reached the fort at Schenectady and massacred 60 settlers and burned most of the British colonial settlement. This led to more back and forth military raids and conflicts, which resulted in (what is now Canada) becoming a British colony. |

Subject: RE: BS: Schenectady Burns! Blame Canada! From: JennieG Date: 09 Feb 14 - 01:27 AM How does one pronounce the name of the aforementioned town? I can pronounce - indeed, have visited - Penetanguishine, but have never tried to say or visit Schenectady. Upon looking it up (because I am a curious person who likes to improve my knowledge) I find the name is derived loosely from a Mohawk work meaning "near the pines" or "place beyond the pines". I know of a song called "In the pines", so does that mean this is actually a musical thread which should be above the line? |

I did not want to be classified as one, so I wondered in what way I'd offended that I would not get credit for being a serious writer. I decided that it was because I wrote about technology, and most fine American writers know nothing about technology. I got classified as a science fiction writer simply because I wrote about Schenectady, New York. My first book, Player Piano, was about Schenectady. There are huge factories in Schenectady and nothing else. I and my associates were engineers, physicists, chemists, and mathematicians. And when I wrote about the General Electric Company and Schenectady, it seemed a fantasy of the future to critics who had never seen the place." " ― Kurt Vonnegut, A Man Without a Country |
