HIM HIM HIM!!!! Draw near and heed well Her Royal Majesty.

As I know this discussion will get around to the subject of compensation for ransacking and burning down The White House during The Skirmish of 1812, I invite your president, Barry is it, to tea at the Governer General's cottage in the colony of Canada. I shall instruct him to use the good china which we took from said House.

That is all.

Her Majesty Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas, Queen, Defender of the Faith, Duchess of Edinburgh, Countess of Merioneth, Baroness Greenwich, Duke of Lancaster, Lord of Mann, Duke of Normandy, Sovereign of the Most Honourable Order of the Garter, Sovereign of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, Sovereign of the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle, Sovereign of the Most Illustrious Order of Saint Patrick, Sovereign of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George, Sovereign of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Sovereign of the Distinguished Service Order, Sovereign of the Imperial Service Order, Sovereign of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India, Sovereign of the Most Eminent Order of the Indian Empire, Sovereign of the Order of British India, Sovereign of the Indian Order of Merit, Sovereign of the Order of Burma, Sovereign of the Royal Order of Victoria and Albert, Sovereign of the Royal Family Order of King Edward VII, Sovereign of the Order of Merit, Sovereign of the Order of the Companions of Honour, Sovereign of the Royal Victorian Order, Sovereign of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.

On refection, if is the French that should appoligise to the Dutch for the raid, the Dutch who should appoligise for pushing the Mohican off the land to establish Fort Orange. GE could be blamed for the towns current downslide.

John Van Laak should appoligise for the official song:

Our Schenectady

What a warm and friendly place it is to be

Nestled among plains and hills

With a beautiful river that always gives us thrills

And stores and shops with all that one might need or wish to see

And legends and tales and lots of history

Oh Schenectady

Our Schenectady

Let us now plan and help to make it grow

If we will all do our best

Then others can do the rest

For places to study and learn in

Places to work and earn in

Places to live in happiness

Schenectady was under English rule at the time; The attack came out of New France to the North...

if only the snowmen guarding the gates had fought back! But all evidence shows their resistance melted in moments.

Though, I suspect there are different versions, below is my understanding of the events.

In 1689 France and England was at war. English colonists in New York heard the news first and convinced their Iroquois allies to attack the French. Most French colonies were unfortified. 1,500 Iroquois attacked Lachine near Montreal, which became known as the Lachine massacre. Of the 375 inhabitants, 24 were killed and 76 others were taken prisoner. Fifty-six of the 77 buildings were razed to the ground.

following the Lachine Massacre, France ordered a retaliatory attack on the Albany in the British colony of New York. This war, the first in the British and French colonies, would come to be known as King William's War.

In February 1690 France, began an invasion. One hundred and sixteen militiamen and 96 Indian allies reached the fort at Schenectady and massacred 60 settlers and burned most of the British colonial settlement.

This led to more back and forth military raids and conflicts, which resulted in (what is now Canada) becoming a British colony.

Sounds like a medium sized hockey riot in a major Canadian city. the kind they have when the team wins.

Canada (with the help of the original peoples, taught the French to play hockey.
Unfortunately, the lure of cricket limited the success of Canada converting the British to the same sport. What a pity :)

How does one pronounce the name of the aforementioned town? I can pronounce - indeed, have visited - Penetanguishine, but have never tried to say or visit Schenectady.

Upon looking it up (because I am a curious person who likes to improve my knowledge) I find the name is derived loosely from a Mohawk work meaning "near the pines" or "place beyond the pines". I know of a song called "In the pines", so does that mean this is actually a musical thread which should be above the line?

Sha-neck-ta-dee. Each syllable pronounced separately and slowly. Europeons talk so fast compared to First Nations peoples that meaning is sometimes lost. Modern dictionaries don't cut the grass when I talk with my Native or French or German or Irish friends.

Yes, that is a derogatory typo. It is lost on many. It may offend some and it may gather disgust from some... Sha-nahk-a-day.

""I became a so-called science fiction writer when someone decreed that I was a science fiction writer. I did not want to be classified as one, so I wondered in what way I'd offended that I would not get credit for being a serious writer. I decided that it was because I wrote about technology, and most fine American writers know nothing about technology. I got classified as a science fiction writer simply because I wrote about Schenectady, New York. My first book, Player Piano, was about Schenectady. There are huge factories in Schenectady and nothing else. I and my associates were engineers, physicists, chemists, and mathematicians. And when I wrote about the General Electric Company and Schenectady, it seemed a fantasy of the future to critics who had never seen the place." "

I thought it had to do with his main character in Slaughter House Five being teleported constantly back and forth between as cage in an alien zoo on another planet and a basement in Dresden.

Silly me. Though its been 30 years or more since I have read Vonnegut. Maybe it was a jail cell en Dresden. :-)

Mom & Dad lived in Schenectady when they were first married -- Dad was an engineer at GE during the war (WWII, that is).

There was a fire in their apartment... Mom blamed the landlady. Suspected that her (Mom's) subscription to The Daily Worker might have been the excuse. Not Canada.

(Mom was not a card carrier, but believed in hearing from all sides.)

The US has been struck by great cities burning before - Chicago, Baltimore, Boston, DC all come to mind immediately - but now we must add Schenectady to that list. Burned by savages from the North, the town, like all other American cities that burned, arose phoenix-like from its own ashes to make the US the Great Nation it is today, an example for the world and for all humanity. Indeed, an example even for space aliens.
