Well Well Well. It had to happen.
It seems like the evil 1% are treating their dogs better than their fellow, less fortunate human beings

That is quite true Sawzaw. I think you have hit upon the reason as well.

They own their dogs but not the human beings so it is a matter of responsible care for their own property, vs not giving a fuck about things they don't own. Think of a nice shiny retail franchise with minimum wage staff and you get the picture. If the employees were slaves, they would get medical care, food and shelter without having to go begging to the tax payer.

Of course, the two pictures have little relation to *each other*.

It might just be that the owners of those dogs treat the poor quite well.... or attempt to when not impeded by others.... since I think those are 'probably' the dogs who live at the White House. (you note there is no food on the table)

Disgraceful discrimination!

Shame on you for not projecting the feeling of "pride of home ownership" upon your dog. Do you not have an insane set of false priorities and and perverse sense of entitlement? What % do you think you are?

You ain't getting into the club with that attitude mister. Next thing you know you'll be transporting your dog in a plastic carrier rather than a Gucci hand bag.

James, being another 1%er who loves living large and flaunted his Rolls-Royce and yachts

New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine , another 1%er, decried the "betrayal of the public trust by a longstanding and well-known public official" and said it was sad that "the good works done by Mayor James are now overshadowed."

James, who loves living large and flaunted his Rolls-Royce and yachts, may yet be tried on separate charges that he billed the city tens of thousands of dollars for lavish vacations with various mistresses.

You can think anything you want Jack. Personally I would like to see the human beings taken care of at least as good as the dogs. You know taxied around in an Osprey using your money.

It was the first time the Ospreys have been taken on holiday by a US president.

More than 70 hotel rooms, each costing up to $345 (£220) a night, have been booked out for Secret Service agents, who took charge of luggage including two large mesh bags full of basketballs.

The Obamas are staying in Chilmark on the western tip of the island, an area that is dotted with multi-million dollar homes. The neighbours include actor Ted Danson and the singer Carly Simon.

On several previous visits the Obamas had stayed at the 28-acre Blue Heron Farm, but it has since been sold to Britain's most celebrated architect, Baron Foster of Thames Bank.

The president has therefore had to downsize to a $7.6 million, 5,000-square foot retreat on nine acres which is owned by a businessman friend from Chicago. It includes a basketball court.

As a result Mr Obama will be staying closer to public roads which will have to be closed as his motorcade heads for the golf course or bookshop.

The Martha's Vineyard Times newspaper warned residents to expect "extraordinary and lengthy up-island detours". Local officials also emailed residents, saying: "Anyone aggrieved by this closing should email or call the White House."

Jay Carney, White House spokesman, said: "Obviously, when you're President of the United States, you carry a little baggage when you travel. And that's true whether it's on a summit, international meeting, a domestic trip, or for a vacation. I know he's looking forward very much to some down time with his family. I'm sure he'll see some friends."

In the 12 years since Bill Clinton has left office, he has given 544 paid speeches all over the world. His fee has ranged from $28,000 to $750,000. The average fee for a single speaking engagement has been $195,000. In 2012, Bill earned $17 million and in 2011 he earned $13.4 million. In total he has made $106 million off speaking engagements since 2001.

Bill:"This inequality problem bedevils the entire country. But it is not just a moral outrage, it is a horrible constraint on economic growth and on giving people the security they need to tackle problems like climate change."

Earlier in 2013 Hillary Clinton re-entered private life after stepping down as Secretary of State. Hillary quickly earned a cool $14 million advance for future book with publishing company Simon & Schuster. She is also starting to hit the private speech circuit and earning six figures for her time.

In speech Hillary gave upon receiving an award at her Yale Law fortieth anniversary, she said that America must "reverse this tide of inequality that is eating away at the social fabric of our country."

Richer Than Romney: Al Gore Scores On Sale Of Current TV

Following Al Jazeera's purchase of his Current TV, FORBES estimates that former Vice President Al Gore is worth more than $300 million.

When former Vice President Al Gore ran for president more than 12 years ago, he had less than $2 million in assets to his name. Now it appears he is on the verge of making more than 50 times that amount from just one deal.

On Wednesday it was announced that Al Jazeera would purchase his cable television network Current TV for a reported $500 million. According to a source close to the company, Gore, chairman of Current TV, owned approximately 20% of the San Francisco-based media company that he cofounded with Joel Hyatt, giving him a $100 million pre-tax payday. [He tried to speed up the sale to avoid an increase in Cap gains taxes. Unpatriotic?]

The creation and sale of Current TV is the latest of a number of Gore's savvy business moves since leaving the White House in 2001, when one of his most valuable assets was a Tennessee farm pasture worth less than $250,000, according to public documents. Taking into account taxes to be paid on the deal, possible earlier debt and the fact that Gore's representatives declined to comment, FORBES conservatively estimates the former vice president's net worth to be at least $300 million, making him wealthier than unsuccessful Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

The Haute couture of the 1%

Michelle Obama chose Venezuelan-American designer Carolina Herrera for the gown she wore Tuesday to the state dinner honoring French President Francois Hollande.

The formal, ornate style of the sumptuous gown by Ms Herrera reflected French aesthetics, from the intricate beaded black bodice, to the train and full skirt in a color called liberty blue.

'From the White House to Versailles it's not that far,' said Susan Swimmer, author of Michelle Obama: First Lady of Fashion and Style. 'It's much more keeping in a French aesthetic than I've seen her wear before. It's very French in terms of how ornate it is and the use of lace and the velvet sash.'

The gown featured a black, hand-sewn beaded embroidery applique scallop-edged top that came to Ms Obama's elbows.

The top went over a blue silk faille corset and long skirt with a train that billowed behind the first lady as she walked with President Barack Obama.

She added black Jimmy Choo heels and a black velvet belt. The color also echoed the blue color that both countries share in their flags.

The White House confirmed it was a Herrera gown and Herrera took credit in a news release saying she made the dress at her New York atelier. Taking a gander at how much the custom-made dress cost, Sally Quin, who writes about religion for a blog at The Washington Post, told CNN: 'I think that dress probably cost around $12,000. But that's just my guess.'

The first lady, however, is known for wearing silhouettes that are more sleek and glamorous. Take, for example, the strapless and sequined custom-made Naeem Khan column gown she wore to the state dinner for India in 2009.

The top went over a blue silk faille corset and long skirt with a train that billowed behind the first lady as she walked with President Barack Obama

'It's a very stately dress especially for her because she usually wears something much more streamlined,' Betts said.

The dress also did something that's a bit of a rarity. It covered Michelle Obama's famously toned arms.

'I don't know that she's ever worn sleeves for a formal occasion,' Swimmer said. 'Why would she? She's got fabulous arms!'

The first lady had the fashion spotlight to herself during the evening's events.

That's because Hollande was without a date after a very public breakup with his longtime girlfriend, Valerie Trierweiler. It meant the American president's wife was the center of attention, seated next to the tuxedoed French leader.

Michelle Obama is no stranger to Herrera's work. She's worn the designer before, as recently as a September luncheon in New York for the spouses of foreign dignitaries.

"The truth is, in order to get things like universal health care and a revamped education system, then someone (not me) is going to have to give up a piece of their pie so that someone else can have more."

More figures:
In the U. S., there are 33 million *'mass' affluent households, and they control 37% of the country's liquid financial assets.
*$500,000-1,500,000 in investable assets.

On the other hand, half of the U, S. population is low or poverty level in income. Roughly incomes around $25,000 or less.

This income inequality should be receiving government intervention.

Michael Moore has a net worth exceeding $50 million; he lives in a 17th-floor, $1 million-plus apartment in New York City; and he owns a luxurious house (also worth at least $1 million) in an exclusive community in northern Michigan. When he gives speeches in various venues, Moore charges up to $30,000 per appearance.

"I don't own a single share of stock, and I have never owned a single share of stock. I don't support this. [in front while at the NYSE] This is a rigged casino. I don't know why anybody would put their hard-earned money into this, especially after what happened in this last decade. ... Who's making this money? Who's dividing this pie up so that the 1% get the majority of it?"

CNN's Piers Morgan asked the filmmaker whether he was in the 1% of top income earners. Moore repled: "I'm not in the 1%, no." When Morgan pressed him further "to admit the bleeding obvious," Moore said: "No, I'm not.... How could I be in the 1%? No that's not true.

Sawz comes across as a mean spirited, envious and rather stupid man who doesn't seem to be aware that it is capital which supplies the jobs which keep people like him from starving.

In the main, people are paid according to their value to the company they work for.

This doesn't justify some of the pay and bonuses of the top earners, but it does point to those who are too lazy to improve their value by learning skills and working hard.

Few company execs can even remember what it was like to work five eight hour days.

You don't get enough pay? Get off your arse and EARN more.

As for what happens to children like the one in the picture, one can only say "He certainly lives a long long way from the US of A.

Just like Sawz, who lives quite a distance from reality.

An immigrant from Somalia came as a health caregiver this morning. She and her husband came as refugees, with four small children some 10 or so years ago.
All four children are in university, one beginning his lowly internship leading to his becoming a surgeon.
Like several other surgeons here, he will be in at least the top 2% of income earners by his retirement.

Other caregivers I have met come from Ethiopia, other countries in Africa. All are hard workers, with children receiving the best in education; they do not complain but are giving their best as they rise on the income scale. They have no quarrel with those who have worked their way into the top 1%.

Some people, like the one who started this thread, will remain a poor complainer for the rest of his life.

(Buying memorabilia may be a good investment, but I wouldn't choose that category. Who will remember some entertainer some 50 years down the road?)
