Cananda are currently third in the medal table. Good job.

English girl, Lizzy Yarnold, won gold sliding downhill on a tea tray travelling at over 80mph.

Hats off the the Austrian hockey team... for just qualifying. With a population of hockey players of only 10,000, that is an acheivment of note. Their third period defense against Canada yesterday was stellar! No goals in the third. Just watching them stand up to the likes of Nash was brow raising. If I saw the size of that rig coming at me with his shoulders down at high speed, I'd piss in my cup.

I watched the two top men in the men's figure skating (gotta love the internut... you can find out when a certain skater will take the ice and just watch that performance, thereby saving valuable time to waste elsewhere on the net) and I felt poorly for each. So much so that I wondered if the ice was bad. Tho, I woulda taken a couple a points from the gold medal winner for his costume. You'd never catch Kurt Browning or Scott Hamilton in such a frilly frock. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Here's the site I use.

Yanks play Ruskies in men's hockey in a few minutes. GO USA!

Yanks play Swedes in women's curling later today. DITTO!

On the last shootout shot, buddy hit the post with the Yanks leading by one. Man that musta been a nailbiter!!!

CAN v FIN mens hockey should be good. I expect USA v FIN will be in USA's favour. USA is putting pressure on CAN at womens curling at the moment. The last end looked like a checker board.

ManOman! The curling was a nailbiter. Canuck skip didn't have the weight for a simple tapback in the tenth but drew to the button in the eleventh... whew!

The hockey even more so! Overtime goal. Talk about fast. End to end for the first 8 minutes non-stop. The Canucks dumped and fought so hard that it seemed like they were over centre 2/3s of the game but the Finn defense was amazing. Their passing was a joy to watch. The Canuck passing was pale by comparison until into the second. We got good skaters but those Finns must practice on a mile long rink!

C'mon to Quebec and move all the f&$%#$% snow you want, although move it to where will be a problem.

Speaking of mile long skating rinks: probably why so many good skaters come from Saskatchewan. Ain't nothin' but miles and miles of miles and miles. And then winter comes, it all freezes over and once again there ain't nothin' but miles and miles of miles and miles of rink.

Pete... cool!

USA v SWE ended at 6-1 and 70-9.

CAN v SUI might go somewhat the same way. 8m in and its 3-0, a shitload-3. And it would be a shitload+ if the Canuckettes would SHOOT THE PUCK instead of waiting for the perfect shot. My old would be screaming louder than me if he was alive... PUT THE PUCK ON THE NET!!!!

The announcers need a good smack too. The Blueline is 4' closer to the net and that is why the Canuckettes are offside a LOT. Grrrr... it's a LINE.

Johnson = stickhandling lessons. Seriously. Maybe Lafleur. Maybe Orr. Maybe but I doubt it. Amazing!

Canada 2, Finland 1- it could easily have gone the other way.
The hockey team is vulnerable, and could easily slip.

Canada disappointing in skating.

Overall though, a good performance so far.

There's hockey and there women's hockey.

Hahahaha... THAT should get some interest up. Heheheehee.

Darn... I can't remember her name! 15 years old, 110 pounds. Man can she play hockey! I searched her on the websites but can't find her. Talk about a ball of fire... a firecracker! She might get knocked down by the big girls at times but she disrupts play big time. Cool as a cucumber. Skates and stickhandles well. A pride and joy to watch. 110 pounds! When I was a lad, she was called a spinner. (Yes, that is considered VERY sexist and even demeaning by those who are devoid of humour. Screw youse. Spinners are fun and they know it. I remember one lass in particular...)

Both US and Canada have a minor disadvantage caused by the rink size. However, it's our game. US and Canada for gold--I agree with gnu.

The men's team has 11 of the 14 top scorers in the NHL, I read. If Canada sent a second team they would be the second best team there I read. Two teams would be fun.

"minor disadvantage caused by the rink size"

I disagree for one very simple reason. This goes back to my statement above... "The announcers need a good smack too. The Blueline is 4' closer to the net and that is why the Canuckettes are offside a LOT. Grrrr... it's a LINE."

Here is my logic. The other team plays on the same ice. They are both on the same rink. The bluelines and creases are the same at each end. If the Canucks can't deal with a big fuckin blue line that goes all the way across the rink or a big blue semi-cicle in front of their opponent's goal, they should take off their pads and go home. There is NO disadvantage if 'whatever' applies to both teams and I am rather pissed that the CBC announcers make excuses for shitty play. It's a rink with lines and BOTH teams play on it. No dis/advantage.

The Europeans, who grew up with this size rink are used to the bounces, the angles and the timing of passes to cross the blueline.

On the other hand the Canadians have a much more talented team.

One would think that the US team would be at the biggest disadvantage. But they beat the Russians on home ice. So you are probably right Gnu. The rink can't be used as an excuse.

I'll agree on the angles part.

Oops! "I am gonna be hoarse in the AM. So... CAN v USA for gold." shoulda been "I am gonna be hoarse in the AM. So... CAN v USA to get gold." Obviously, they both can't win it. Of course, it will be a test for anyone to get any medals. Some darn fine teams on the ice.

I am looking forward to seeing the Finns play again. I think Russia will beat Norway today to play them next.

Gnu, I agree. ALL of the teams have players who have played on both types of rinks, as amateurs and professionals.
Crossing the blue line is a matter of timing. Moreover, some teams take chances on the off-chance. Nuthin' wrong with that.

They have had a great deal of advice from me VERY loudly for near an hour of play and they finally heard me and decided to PUT DAT PUCK ON DAT NET! Overtime. These two teams are quite different. The Yanks are fast. The Canucks more strategic. I could go on but none of that matters now. This can easily go either way. But, the fact is, this is GREAT hockey. No matter who wins, I have had a lovely afternoon. Seriously, anyone who yawns at women's hockey is missin out.

As much as I screamed and jumped up and down and clapped... I felt sorry and sad for the Yanks when they were gettin the silver medals. Only two lasses smiled. Our NA culture is kinda sad when #2 in the world sucks that bad.

Then again... last Lympics, The Wicked One said sommat like, "They had our flag on the floor of their dressing room... now I wanna know if they want us to sign it!" So, iffin ya don't know what this means to Canuck hockey fans, that might help ya out.

Most odd that they would be "sad" to get silver. Most people on the podium are proud and thankful to be there- at any of the three levels. The Swiss team seemed quite proud and upbeat.

This will go down in Olympic history as one of the greatest games ever played! The gals did Canada proud and proved that victory can be snatched from the jaws of defeat! I too feel sorry, at least a bit, watching the USA accept the silver. No shame on them as it could have gone either way and their country should welcome them home as heros!
Now if our mens team can get enough inspiration from the gals to show more fire more gold is hopefully in store.
Also congrats to Jennifer Jones and her team for a fantastic showing!!!!

There is a cartoon on the net with the Canuck men's coach telling the team to go out and play like girls. I LOVE it!

The Jones rink and the women's hockey team made Canucks proud today but I feel beyond that... beyond national patriotism and `pride`. What I felt in my heart today was all of that and the spirit of never giving up but staying focused and determined. As so many of our brothers and sisters all over this earth struggle every day, the opulence of this event seems distant in their regard. Rejoice? Of course! But, remember what it all means... and share it with all.

It's a fuckin cartoon. Girls aren't as physically strong as boys. It's a fact. Get over it or sign yer daughters up for men's hockey. And, while yer at it, change the rules to allow body checks in women's hockey. Big boys check. Big girls don't. Do the math. I don't make the rules or the genetics. I appreciate La Difference and I don't ween about the inequalities of nature... or sillyass cartoons that allude to the detraction of the macho attitude among men which is then lost on some. The "joke" is much misinterpreted by some, IMHO. I thought it was fuckin hilarious... challenging this group of grown hairy assed men to step up to the plate and play as well as their fellow Canuck women. Get with modern worrld gnu. Norms of what is funny and what is disrespectful have changed. There was a time that racial, sexist and hurtful jokes werecseen as funny by everyone. Thankfully, many (but, surely not all) considerate folks now see things differently, and can view potentially derogatory in a more sensitive light. I have learned to "speak up" versus sif back when I see potentially considerate people cross the line, using humour (aka, disrespect, disguised as humour) or other more direct routes.

Gnu, If you care to break away from your easy chair, watching don cherry, and read my original post on the cartoon, and I noted the variations in views on what costitutes humour. I also indicated some may not find that cartoon funny, and that some may view it as somewhat offensive to women.

As to women and hockey: unlike Don Cherry, Imo, good hocky trancends rough strong-guy stuff designed to entertain through potentially haming other players. Being strong is not a factor in being agile, and skating, puck handling, passing and receiving, being a team player and thinking and acting fast. These all make up good hockey and hockey players, as with many sports. Though more compact in structure (like some males and nationalities) ), I see no reason why women can not excell in hockey, as men do (recognizing that men have had a head start, through participation for far longer). In fact, the Olympics prove it so.

Btw, I found it rude for you to bring my family into the "what is humour -cartoon discussion (my daughter). That pissed me off. I would expect better from you- but, possibly I misjudged your character?

I think that Forsberg is wrong and Cherry is right. Canadian do bend over backwards to accommodate the whiners. No offense meant by this Ed, I'm just calling your behavior typical of Ontario, where I lived for 10 years. But your posts on this thread perfectly illustrate Cherry's point. Y'all mainlanders are so hung up about "being fair" to everyone, women, in this example, that you end up being unfair to Canadians.

Gnu is a little rough around the edges, but we all know he has a big heart.

Anyway, where I am from being confused as an Ontarian is on the edge of being an insult :) Fortunately, women are considered equal to men as Canadians. Unfortunately, this was not the case not that long ago, and a few have held onto the unfortunate past. To me, Cherry, though admittedly mostly an entertainer, is more of an embarassment to sport than a person I feel our young athletes should look up to.I would prefer if broken brains and shortened careers from unneeded violence be more closely confined to MMA, football and boxing.

Gnu,
why is it that you are so rude to people who have a different perspective than you, and must resort to using offensive language (which does nothingvto convert anyone, just makes you look like an old cranky jerk).

Noone suggested you you could or should not post your cartoon (which you found funny) All I posted was a different perspective. You came back with your gutter language that added not much logical, nor logical, but jus gutter language. You keep saying that this site is for everyone to enjoy and share their perspectives. Yet, you get deffensive and rude when other posters dontcsee things exactly as you do.

Gettjng angry and offensive when others in the world see differently will only get you medical problems and isolation. Many people here have appoligised for you in the past saying you have a good heart. Why act in such a manner to prove them wrong? Why not demonstrate and reinforce that good reputation? No one is threatening the views that you seem to hold close and true.

Remember the old folk song messages - Behappy, tolerant of others viewpoints and love your neighbour.

I wasn't apologizing for Gnu, when I said he has a good heart, I was stating an observed fact, which I thought that you were forgetting.

I don't know of any prohibition on this site against using "gutter language" on this site, there is certainly a tradition of it in folk music.

IMHO, I think that Gnu is free to be anything he wants except to be impolite, unkind, argumentative or snooty. If he wants to be a blue language using "old cranky jerk, that is his choice.

You may find foul language impolite. OTOH for more than a decade that I have posted here, it has been part of the forum.

You may have found he is being unkind or impolite to you. If you politely make him aware of that, preferably by PM, the Gnu, I know will respond favorably.

You two don't seem that far apart. It was a cartoon poking fun of old time coaches who used to mock boys by saying "you play like a girl." Gnu and the cartoonist think its still relevant, you don't, opinions have been expressed. Does anyone, not living in the US want to congratulate the great Olympics they have had?

You are wrong jts, I never commented that the cartoon is "not funny". I merely said that some may have a different viewpoint. (In my workplace, one has to be keenly alert to this when using humour in the public domain). In fact, while I found the cartoon somewhat humourous, IMO, itvwas hardly that clever. There is surely differenes in humour everywhere.

BTW, like others, I share the same right to post what I wish here, and to express my opinion, or feel offended by what I see is uncalled for or what I see as offensive personal comments. I realize that I am outside some of the inside friendships, aliances and long time posters and musical friends. But, that is no reason notvtovshare my views, like others.

Where I come from, and where gnu resides, and in our generation, telling someone to F off are clear fighting terms- possibly where you reside they are not. I have learned in life notvto ignore those who bully you, and yapping dogs (that attack you when you lower your guard). I plan to call itvand respond, if I detect a personal attack. You are free to post as you wish (or, take your own advicevon other threads, such as in the religious posts).

Gnus and my comments are in the public domain to access (or not); and I see no reason to go outside that to a pm. In fact, vyour suggestion puzzles me.

I recognize that there are "groups of friends" on this site, and loose alliances on issues and beyond (includinfg early posters, musical frends and such).

Gnu is rude only to people who fuckin ask for it.

In Winter Olympics, The Netherlands always corners many of the skating medals. Skating is their passion.
Norway, a small population, is strong in ski, it is their passion.

Canada, United States, Russia, and most central EU countries are more varied in their interests, and less focused on a particular brand of sport. Medal count of the U. S. and Russia is high, correlating with large population.

Winter is a large part of the Canadian climate; population 1/10 the U. S., but *'participaction' is part of their nature. Either enjoy winter or succumb to the blues. *Canuck buzzword.

How DARE Canada win more gold medals that the US???

It's uncalled for and in spite of Canada's Black Brant missiles we will probably have to invade again to retrieve those medals which are rightfully ours!

(And we invented curling just to see if Canadians would fall for it like the Scots fell for the Irish-invented bagpipes.)

Curling- the first written evidence appeared in Latin, when in 1540, John McQuhin, a notary in Paisley, Scotland, reported in his protocol book a challenge between John Schlater, a monk in Paisley Abbey, and Gavin Hamilton, a representative of the Abbot.
Yhe first Curling Clubs were formed in Scotland in the 19th C. and the game was exported wherever Scots settled around the world.
From the site of the World Curling Federation.

Curling was represented at the First Olympic Winter Games, Chamonix, France, in 1924 (Great Britain, Sweden, France, GB winning).

[The Scots have a lot to answer for.....]

The Grand Caledonian Curling Club was given Royal status in 1843.
Curling organizations, first between Canada and Scotland, with other countries coming in later (U. S., Sweden, Norway, France, Germany), were set up.

Curling was 'demonstrated' a couple of times at the Winter Olympics but was not formalized with medal award until the Games at Nagano, 1998.
