Subject: I need a new band name... From: Jo Taylor Date: 18 Nov 99 - 07:34 PM The naming of bands is one of those things that comes round from time to time... this is the time. Having finally persuaded our French friends that Father O'Flynn is really a bit naff, we don't play the tune, French people can't say it, and we're having a change of line-up anyway - we need a new name! Line-up: Me - flute, whistles (or possibly a bit of cello too if I can reclaim it, left it with a friend in England 5 years ago...) Steve - D/G melodeon; Christian: fiddle; plus a guitarist and possibly a bodhran if we can track down the really excellent player we saw in a bar recently! (They do exist!)Repertoire: mainly instrumental unless one of us is forced, I mean persuaded - to sing. Irish, mainly but Steve & I want to introduce more English stuff, some Breton & some Quebecois. Context; mostly bars, some festival work, hopefully dances because that's what I really like to play for. There's a picture on the Mudcat resources photo site of us at a festival last year, the one on the yellow stage - we're now missing Erwan the Breton (2nd from right) who lives 2 hours away in Brittany, making it a little difficult to commit / commute, and Patrice (on the right), the poser in the stripey shirt who wanted to be a pop star! We'd like a name which is quite short and easily pronouncable for native French speakers, I think preferably not more than two syllables - one suggestion was Bastringue (low dance hall, din, paraphernalia) but Christian told us that there are already rather a lot of French bands with that name, it would be quite good to have a little more of an Irish flavour... help!! From: Micca Date: 18 Nov 99 - 08:05 PM Jo how about "Pog Mo Galles" as in "Kiss my French" half Irish Gaelic half French? the o should have the litle stroke over it like the a in Aine that lengthens it so it is not the short o as Pog rhymes with bog but the o as in cloak. |

Subject: RE: I need a new band name... From: Colonel KC Date: 18 Nov 99 - 11:42 PM Now that he's left the group, I think "Erwan the Breton" would be a great name for the band. From: Liz the Squeak Date: 19 Nov 99 - 11:10 AM There was a road sign, near Salisbury in Wiltshire, UK that was just begging to be used for a band name, and I really wish someone would use it... The sign has now had the 'and' taken from it, so loses the appeal, but it pointed to a pretty little group of villages around an equally pretty geographical feature. The name? Subject: RE: I need a new band name... From: Jo Taylor Date: 20 Nov 99 - 07:10 PM Gosh, what a response! Sorry I haven't commented as yet, but computer decided to have a little rest... it does that after storms sometimes, a friend told me it might be due to a build up of static - when there's a storm about I shut down, turn off, unplug - and it won't pick up the graphics wotsit when turned on again. Even fiddled around with its innards last time. Third time the bloody thing's done it. Turn it on the next day, everything's fine. Well that's off my chest. I'll have to read and inwardly digest all the above - Micca's suggestion stuck out because Steve-the-melodeon-player's dog is called Pog. We used to live in the same village in England, I had Daisy-dog and he had Maisy-pog but the old dear seems to have lost her prefix in later years! Keep them coming - I'll download these and peruse when off line. Cheers - Jo |

Subject: RE: I need a new band name... From: Jo Taylor Date: 22 Nov 99 - 08:43 PM This is great! Damn machine still playing up, I've been struggling all day to persuade it to do more than 16 colour, 640x480 (which is not nice when you're a graphic designer, one needs a few more colours...) now got 1024x768 high colour back (thanks to a friend) but it's totally illogical and I'm rather pissed off, it's 2.20am and I've just got in after a big hassle that you don't want to know about... ...So it's so wonderful to come in here and be cheered up. Might be a slight change of plan on the line-up, might all be Brits, a really excellent fiddle player & singer is interested in working with Steve & I, and another Devonshire immigrant will be movng here shortly who is a guitarist & singer. Keep them coming, yes, of course I'll let you know. Don't want to end up with a name by default which has happened in the past - you put together a band for one gig and think of a silly name and get stuck with it. We had a jug band in the UK which ended up being called Septic Tank by that process (it grew from sessions in the cellar bar of a pub called the Crown & Sceptre alias the Brown & Septic), but got changed eventually, can't really do weddings and suchlike with a name like that. And an Irish band in Devon landed the name Malone's Rangers. Going back to the Pog one, didn't I once hear that the Pogues' name started as Gaelic for Kiss My Arse? (pardon me). Rambling again, good night! Jo |
Subject: RE: I need a new band name... From: Mbo Date: 22 Nov 99 - 08:49 PM Right-O! The Pogues' orinal name was "Pogue Mahone" which means, as you said "kiss my arse." To be less offensive to the public, the band shortened it to just "The Pogues." --Mbo |

Subject: RE: I need a new band name... From: CE Morgan Date: 23 Nov 99 - 10:07 PM I'm in a new band with the same quandary right now. The best suggestion we've been given is to go through all your tunebooks (Ryan's, O'Neill's, etc.) and pick the name of a tune that tickles yer fancy. Using this method, our band's short list included "Plaid Mantle", "Banshee's Cry", "Upstairs in a Tent", "Minstrels' Fancy", and my personal fave, "Rum and Onions"! (No decisions yet.) If you're all Brits, why not something that would celebrate your foreign-ness: "Expatriates", "English Twits", whatever. Best of luck! Cindy Ellen |

I am in an Accordion and Guitar duo (me on Accordion) and we calkl ourselves 'AAAAG', which stands simlpy for 'An Accordion And A Guitar' simple eh!! we play all aroungd the english folk festivals. I am also in another band which is named after a car number plate number, which one members dad was looking for, Crazy but it works. Were called 422 and have just gotr through to the BBC Radio Two Young Folk Awards, so listen on the 8th of December between 8 & 9 and you'll hear us. My tip to finding your name. Open a Thausaurus on the 57th page and pick the 1st word in the 6th line down and call yourselves that!! Cheers, Sam |

Subject: RE: I need a new band name... From: stupidbodhranplayerwhodoesn'tknowanybetter Date: 26 Nov 99 - 01:16 PM Some friends of mine who live in Montreal found another band going by the same name as them so they changed their name to "Nobody You Know". Also, there is the story of a banjo player turned electric guitarist who flipped through a dictionary and found the entry: recurring motif in European folktales in which a traveller comes upon a village who refuses to bury a man who died in debt. The hero spends his last penny to provide the corpse with a proper burial. The ghost of the corpse befriends the man anonymously and helps him to win a fortune, marry a princess, et.al. The ghost finally reveals himself. ANd thus was born th San fFrancisco band, the Grateful Dead. Check your dictionary, it can't hurt. Rich |
