Thanks too Janie-----I do have a lot of Leonard Cohen already (I'm a fan). Any particular Joni Mitchell songs that you think qualify as either being therapeutic, are about therapy, or have some kind of a therapy theme?

Gerry....Both Sides Now does fit, I think. Maybe even 4 Strong Winds---although I'm not sure.    And I'll check out Eileen McCann and James Keelaghan. Any particular songs you'd recommend as relating to the topic(s)?

In 2002, James Gordon of Guelph, Ontario released a 12-song CD titled "1 in 5", consisting of 12 songs about mental health issues.

On the CD "Welcome to Lawrenceville" (available through CD Baby) by the late Susan Lawrence, a resident of Toronto, she included a parody titled "What a Friend We Have in Therapy".

don't know if Joni Mitchell still qualifies as Canadian but several of her songs would seem to be appropriate from any or all of the perspectives you mentioned.

Leonard Cohen is a bit trickier, but "Bird On a Wire" comes to mind.

In the midst of my own music fog I am at present blanking on a number of Canadian "roots" singer/songwriters that I have come across on "Music Fog" over the past several years - and of course can not recall any of them for now. Unfortunately, I tend to pay much more attention to the song than to who does it or where they are from these days - so not much help. But would love to listen in on your series. Will it be streamed or available for podcast on-line? If so, please give links and dates if not available for later podcasts.

Four Strong Winds (Ian & Sylvia). For Lovin' Me (Gordon Lightfoot). Both Sides Now (Joni Mitchell). That's No Way To Say Goodbye (Leonard Cohen). The back catalog of those four Canadian artists alone should do you for your whole series. For variety, throw in a little Eileen McGann, and James Keelaghan.

It has been my experience....that "Rugby Songs" are a grand cure for "therapy."

Sounds like a challenging topic. I think Girl Group songs are some of the most therapeutic songs around. It just feels good to sing "Chapel of Love" or "Soldier Boy" and ham it up full-strength.

Hi folks,

I've just started a new radio program on PeachCityRadio.org called "Musical Therapy".......which explores counselling or psychotherapy, and it's relationship to music. There will be a variety of topics.....positive psychology, making it through relationships, Mindfulness, Disengaging Depression, Finding Meaning, The joy of Connection, etc.

Right now I'm working on one called Codependency: the Give and Take of Giving and Taking.   I've found a lot of good songs (Eg. Addicted by Cheryl Wheeler/Dan Seals, Girl—The Beatles, lots of Dory Previn, Who's Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Foot, American Gothic by David Ackles, Reptile--The Church, I need more Canadian songs (as we have a 35% Canadian content rule for 'on air' broadcasting (which we're striving for).

Any ideas? They can be about codependency, about giving, about taking, or a positive intervention that counteracts either extreme.

Any genre of music is acceptable.
