Well, it was very much in the news yesterday. Ebay however remains silent on the issue, at least you'd expect they'd send out a mailing to members of the site. But no, not so far anyway.

No announcement on www.ebay.com yet, but I changed my password anyhow. I do this periodically on all sites but mudcat.

All reports indicate that financial data was not compromised since it is in a separate system.

My son was looking at cars from dealers on eBay recently. He spotted several cars from different dealers which had ridiculously low prices. When he came to check them the next morning, the entries had vanished.

On contacting some of the dealers by phone, he discovered that hackers had hacked the auctions, lowered the prices and had been hoping to get deposits funnelled to them.

Ebay has now set up a 'reset password' alert on it's pages, would seem to be a good move!

A report I heard this morning said that eBay users should change their passwords because hackers would be able to use them to get into their bank accounts and credit cards - well, no. My eBay password is only used for my eBay account, so all they could do is look at what I have already bought, or bid on things without being able to use my money to pay for them. I'm not going to panic about it.

the reports I heard said that 1 security problem can lead to other problems due to the data eBay has about it's customers.

EBay hit by cyber attack, urges users to change passwords May 22, 2014

By emailing hacking victims, eBay opens users up to more risk

Topsie is correct (at this stage, financial data not hacked; in a separate system). Various newspapers and other media like to add a 'scare' element to their 'news'.

If their PayPal is hacked, that is another matter!

Everyone should periodically change passwords; a nuisance but better to err on the side of safety.

The hacking may lead to additional email offers of merchandise, women, sure-fire investments and whatever.

A while back, out of curiosity, I inquired about a super camera and lens (price in the thousands). Now advs. for it are appearing on my "Mudcat Café."

Just one of those nuisances we have to get used to.

Got an email "To Ebay Members" today advising password change.
Yesterday would have been better.

Not a big deal changing the password on one site. The trouble is trying to remember which other sites you might have used with the same password. And keeping things straight if you use lots of different passwords.

"Keeping a list and checking it twice..."

I haven't used the same password for more than one site, and I don't have too many, but I keep them in a little notebook.

My memory isn't capable of remembering them.

What worries me is that people here want to help EBay. Some of us are not exactly unhappy that those sons of pornbrokers have been shown up as having feet of rotten clay.

'... email offers of women ...' LOL. I get those all the time. I've no idea what I would do with 'six hot chicks' and it's rather surreal being addressed as 'Hey! Big Boy! Time to hook up!" (Whatever that means) I too got an email from eBay advising me to change my password. It certainly was a day or two late, but I did so. The thing is, both eBay and Amazon are darned useful. Their prices are keen, the choice is almost limitless, the goods come to your door often post-free and it's nothing short of brilliant. We got a new adhesive wing-mirror for my husband's car for less than £5, no postage to pay. It arrived the next day. No quarrels with that!

As a buyer of books and DVDs, and a minor collector of 'various', I use eBay and Amazon regularly, along with Abebooks.

EBay care and offers from thousands of individuals and dealers, and Amazon pricing and free delivery, can't be beat.

eBay offers a lot of people a way to earn supplemental income, and they try to set it up so the scammers don't get more than one shot at customers before they're taken out. They have some of the controls wound a little too tight, and they go by "California rules" regarding the sale of some things that aren't a problem in the rest of the U.S. or the world for that matter.

SRS

The trouble with having lots of passwords and keeping a list is when you lose the list. I tried making a list on my ipad, and then accidentally deleted it, and had quite a lot of problems (partly) restoring it.

When I had done that copied it into an email and sent it to myself, and periodically do that again when necessary.

LOL McGrath! Have you thought of ...er... 'writing' them in a little book? You know, using one of those things called a 'pen'? :)

You sell, you need a password. You buy, tough. What's the point in having a password when for all you know they'll simply compromise it again at some point.
I have three classes of password: PITA ones such as EBay's, where there's really no need other than their marketing wanting to sell my buying pattern onwards, halfway serious where they may have a case for knowing who I am, and the hard case, where I have a need to know nobody's trying to steal my identity.
SO, if EBay needed the password, they'd have made certain it was safe. If they didn't, then why have one? PITA.
So if EBay want me to change the same password on all the other PITE sites, hundreds of them, then they can bloody well pay me for their carelssness. And as they won't, they can live with their shit, shot reputation.
