Subject: BS: Black Sails From: Dave the Gnome Date: 29 May 14 - 04:42 PM Anyone watching? Could have posted it as a music question coz the music is pretty good. But I think the series is better. Pirates - aka Nasty beasts - and lots of sex and violence. What more could anyone want? Cheers DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: Black Sails From: Dave the Gnome Date: 29 May 14 - 04:46 PM Oh - and to make it a complete geek issue, I saw a concertina being played in a recent episode. In 1715? C'mon! :D |

Subject: RE: BS: Black Sails From: GUEST,Raggytash Date: 31 May 14 - 06:52 AM The YHA recently spent £260K on a refurb for the place, frankly ridiculous in my opinion. I cannot see how that amount could be spent on a shepherds bothy ! |
Subject: RE: BS: Black Sails From: bubblyrat Date: 31 May 14 - 10:19 AM Who was that Greek chap who killed himself when he saw the black sails of his son's fleet returning from some adventure / battle ,and thought they (the sails ) meant that his son was dead ?? Can't remember----rattling good yarn, though !! |

Subject: RE: BS: Black Sails From: LadyJean Date: 31 May 14 - 10:47 PM I just saw "Crossbones" the NBC series, which features John Malkovich ans a very blond Blackbeard, who in this series, wasn't killed off the coast of Ocracoake, and is operating, somewhere on some island, I'm not sure where. I do know that when Blackbeard was killed his head was cut off, and displayed for all to see. So, it was a pretty sure thing that he was dead. The governor of North Carolina, who was getting cash from the pirate, wasn't happy about it. If you visit Beaufort NC, you can see relics from the Queen Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard's ship. It's very cool! |

Subject: RE: BS: Black Sails From: Dave the Gnome Date: 20 Sep 17 - 06:21 AM I remembered seeing the first few episodes and then somehow got distracted. Well, I remembered it again last week and caught up on Series 1. Now seen series 2 as well and will start series 3 tonight. It is still good. Full of gratuitous sex and violence. Very folky :-) DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: Black Sails From: punkfolkrocker Date: 20 Sep 17 - 09:45 AM For a tremendously entertaining gratuitously violent skull crushing romp I must recommend Ironclad Loosely based on a real long time ago historical siege.... but mostly based on the Magnificent 7.... Proper fun movie for all - not just blokes - my mrs is Welsh and it well satisfied the inner blood thirsty savage in her DNA... |
Subject: RE: BS: Black Sails From: Dave the Gnome Date: 20 Sep 17 - 10:00 AM Yep - I concur with that PFR. Seen the sequel too and that is just as good IMO. If you don't mind furrin language films you may enjoy Iron & Blood: The Legend of Taras Bulba. I certainly did but maybe that is because of my Cossack origins. It was, IMO again, far better than the 1962 Hollywood epic with Yul Bryner in the lead role. Linking the two together and straying into the realms of folk music, look at the story of Stenka Razin who was both Cossack and pirate! The tune of the song was the base of a folk(ish) song you may be familiar with :-) DtG |

Subject: RE: BS: Black Sails From: punkfolkrocker Date: 20 Sep 17 - 12:31 PM Ironclad 2 - that's encouraging - most reviews are negative, and we have been wondering whether to risk a few quid on it... The wife's favourite TV sports are rugby, sumo wrestling, boxing, and.. errmm.. tennis... So in between tournaments, any Sky or Prime movie with burly hairy warriors battering shite and brains out of each other gets a fixture on the watch list... Naturally, as a Welsh woman, she was transfixed and over-excited by the GOT Dragon Battle... |
