Please define "Southern California" and "Solstice" (in this context) for that matter....I recently moved to the San Fernando Valley region.....is it anywhere nearby????

Mary Kate

Hello Mary Kate and welcome to So Cal. I live in the desert out by Palm Springs. (Here is a link to my profile.) http://profiles.yahoo.com/star2fire Summer Solstice Folk Music and Dance Festival is put on by the California Traditional Music Society. It is held on the weekend closest to the actual solstice, and takes place at the Soka University in Calabasas. Many of us have to travel far to get there and we stay at the Hyatt. (Here is the link.) http://www.hyatt.com/usa/westlake_village/ They let us take over the place and after a full day of workshops in storytelling, or dance, or whatever instrument you want, or shopping(!) or (for me) a combination of all of it, we have big jam sessions in the hotel lobby til the wee hours. I would recommend getting your tickets right away because they are on sale for $15 for each day, whereas if you wait til Solstice they are about $25 a day. (I am not exactly sure about that though because I volunteer every year at the front gate so I get free admission in exchange for working.) (Here is their link.) http://www.ctms-folkmusic.org/ If you go down and click on programs you will see the info on the 2000 (18th annual) festival. Denise

Thanks Denise! Calabasas is a hop skip and jump from me and a place I tend to frequent. I will check out the URL's and see if it will possibly fit into my agenda for 2000!

Mary

Hey Mary! Please consider coming, it is the most fun I have in a year. (But then, I am wife and mom so there may be other people out there having more fun than me on a daily basis...) ;) Denise

Denise,

I too am in the wife and mother club. My son is just turned two and wants to rule the world. Well, at least the juice container and snack cabinet. LOL

I actually heard of this event this past summer (but didn't recall the name "Summer Solstice" being used) I was on the East coast visiting family for a few weeks during it.

Sounds like lots of fun though!

Mary

Two is a very interesting age, I think. I bet he is lots of fun, and says very entertaining things, too. I was just looking at photos yesterday of mine when they were babies. The time has gone so fast, I can hardly believe it. My oldest boy is 20 (majoring in comp. science.) Next son is 18, taking the test for the Navy on Wed. Next is my first daughter, will be 16 in 6 weeks and getting her DL. (She works at the local library.) Last is my other daughter, she is the only one who likes Solstice. She plays the clarinet (not at Solstice--there she plays bones or whatever.) She does belly dancing with me and also likes to do cross stitching, which I do. Husband of 22 years does road construction and has never gone to solstice. Not his bag!! You sing Irish songs, I guess? I am envious! What part of the east did you come from, and why, if I might be so bold? How do you like LA? (Frankly, I LOVE IT!!)

Denise,

I am originally from Syracuse, NY...lived in White Plains a few years...(New York City is "nice to visit" and that's about it IMHO)...the last 5 years I was in San Francisco (right in the heart of the city) and rather liked it...was slower paced than White Plains. And the last 9 months have been in Woodland Hills...it is okay. The summer got too hot for me, even though it was dry vs humid. There are aspects that are nice--ie more residential than SF. I'll be frank and say I don't like the earthquakes (same with SF). That one last month really upset me even though we had no damage whatsoever...I don't want to experience anything worse!

I really miss the true seasons back East, including the snow...and Tahoe Snow just isn't the same.

Are you originally from "this area"?

Mary

Hi Mary, I was born in Det. Mich, (March 5, '59)but we moved to Whittier CA when I was 9 months. I lived in Whittier til I was 26 then my husband and I moved to Reno NV, where we lived for about 9 years. I did like the change of seasons okay but I never liked the snow. In SoCal there was none of that, and the cold wet made it nearly impossible for me to drive. Maybe we tend to like best what we know most. I like warm weather and sunshine mostly. I spend any extra time I can spare at the nearest spa, soaking. I am fairly close to the epicenter of the last quake, and Landers (1992 quake) is just a hop skip and a jump away. I lived through a number of earthquakes growing up in SoCal so they don't bother me, but I can sure understand that they frighten people from back east! Woodland Hills is pretty near Thousand Oaks, isn't it? I look so forward to Solstice, I just can't tell you..... and that is a beautiful area up there. Had you been down visiting and deciding where to move to, or was the luck of the Irish just with you?

We are a bit of a drive from Thousand Oaks...say up to 30 minutes or so way (depending on traffic) if I recall from the couple of times we've driven there. Calabasas is perhaps 10 - 15 minutes away.

An "unbeatable" job offer brought us down here...so much for the "pact" of we'll stay in CA for 5 years then head back East again. LOL

As far as earthquakes go, I really need to get more prepared...ie have supplies handy, etc. Any helpful suggestions?

Mary

Out here they recommend having some bottled water, a radio with batteries, flashlights, blankets and camping type food. They also recommend that we have someone out of state designated to be our person we contact because the local lines tend to get messed up. Contact that person, to let them know of your whereabouts and what, if anything, you need and they can then relay that message to your other friends and relatives. (P.S. There are lots of sites to help you with that. Any search engine should be fine.) Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving. I do hope you will turn up at Solstice.. Denise
