Canadians are crying foul over a quiet U.S.-led push to re-brand it: from the notable ""saskatoon berry"" to the lowly ""juneberry"". Is this not just another example of USA imperialism?

The plant that produces this fruit is commonly called serviceberry and can be found over much of the Pacific Northwest and northern California.

It is in the rose family so it is more closely related to apples than to blueberries, which are related heathers.

""Commercial production of Saskatoon Berries is greatly confined to Canada where current demand exceeds supply. The first Saskatoon Orchard ever planted was fewer than 20 years ago. The Saskatoon Berry industry has grown to be the second largest commercial fruit crop on the Canadian Prairies, second only to strawberries.""

"imperialism"? over a name? Just call it (the berry) what you want.

All sorts of foods have different names in different areas.... why start a furor over it?

A nonsense thread. Mostly known as Serviceberry outside of western Canada.

Amelanchier, shadbush (Maritimers), savisberry, juneberry, Saskatoon, bilberry, etc. Several species.

The Canadian Wildlife Federation and most nurseries call them serviceberries. Nice flowers, not difficult to grow.A good-sized shrub, drought-tolerant.

Actually, cheddar cheese can be made anywhere, unlike stilton, which has very secure terratorial limits

In the Alleghany Highlands of Virginia/West Virginia, we call the Serviceberry tree (Amelanchier spp.) 'sarvis,' 'shadbush' or 'shadblow' The berries make a good jam/preserves/jelly - they taste to me a lot like a blueberry.

In Virginia I heard it referred to as the 'sarvisberry', no doubt a pronunciation variation of 'serviceberry'. My family picked them and ate them but we never learned to like them as well as our blackberries from the Northwest.

Besides, many an arduously gathered handful was flung to the winds when a beetle nestled among them buzzed and vibrated in one's hands.

Since a dollar coin is often called a twooney in Canada, I think you are on to something of a compromise to avert a potential (not) berry war there, Guest. :)

Or, maybe it is spelled twoonie (oddly, I never spelled it before).

$1 = loonie; $2 = twoonie.

It is caled a "loonie" because the design shows the bird the loon, I believe.

So, for non Cananadians, whats $1.50, a loonie and a half (or, a twoonie moins cinquante in French)?
:)
