Subject: BS: NATO Visit - Cardiff/Newport From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Sep 14 - 04:33 AM Coming to a news channel near you, soon. Central Cardiff has been brought almost to a standstill with additional fencing erected for the NATO summit (in Newport) on September 4th/5th. Fencing 9-10 foot high now surrounds Cardiff Castle. Four lane roads (two each way) have been restricted to two lanes. BBC News Wales They say it may improve future tourism for Cardiff, but right now it's a pain in the proverbial! |
Subject: RE: BS: NATO Visit - Cardiff/Newport From: GUEST,Rahere Date: 03 Sep 14 - 05:17 AM Like any other PITA, it passes. It's not going to be a good idea to be south of the Heads of the Valleys road until the weekend's over, it's been worse in Newport since the start of the week. Having run similar meetings myself (past colleagues are running this one), you try to keep it as light as possible without offering an opportunity for Celtic Manor to go down in history for all the wrong reasons. Or would you prefer things to go straight to shooting war because nobody talks? As I type, Obama is stating that every NATO member is serious about the self-defence commitment. |
Subject: RE: BS: NATO Visit - Cardiff/Newport From: Nigel Parsons Date: 03 Sep 14 - 08:45 AM No, It's Ok. I see the need for it. A modern steel fence 9-10 feet high protecting much higher historic walls, parts of which date to Roman times. Whilst those walls would withstand a lot I'm glad to see them protected from contingent damage. |
Subject: RE: BS: NATO Visit - Cardiff/Newport From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 03 Sep 14 - 02:13 PM Celtic Manor looks like one of those monster resort hotels. I won't be attending because I prefer something more intimate. Too bad all the protection is needed, but there are a lot of yahoos out there who must be kept away. |

Subject: RE: BS: NATO Visit - Cardiff/Newport From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 04 Sep 14 - 04:02 AM SO, the government that approves fining parents for taking children out of school for holidays has closed 160 schools at the start of the term for security reasons.... It's a mad world, my masters. RtS |

Subject: RE: BS: NATO Visit - Cardiff/Newport From: GUEST,hw Date: 04 Sep 14 - 10:32 AM They should have held it in Tripoli, the center of their last 'humanitarian' war. Then again, the airport facilities aren't that good. |
Subject: RE: BS: NATO Visit - Cardiff/Newport From: Musket Date: 04 Sep 14 - 01:35 PM The Cardiff facilities had better have improved since I was last there.. Tripoli doesn't try giving you seaweed at breakfast in the hotel. I mustn't laugh. My lad was in Cardiff for a job interview yesterday. I might be going down now and then if he gets it. I have had three speeding tickets in my time. Two of the buggers were on the A40 going to or escaping from Cardiff. |
