Subject: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Bill D Date: 22 Sep 14 - 11:27 AM The IG- Nobel prizes for 2014 have been awarded. http://www.improbable.com/ig/winners/ I think this one is my favorite: "ARCTIC SCIENCE PRIZE [NORWAY, GERMANY, USA, CANADA]: Eigil Reimers and Sindre Eftestøl, for testing how reindeer react to seeing humans who are disguised as polar bears." (you can browse through many years of .....important... results.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Stu Date: 22 Sep 14 - 01:20 PM Love it (although I have found one that might be useful in my own research believe it or not!). |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Mrrzy Date: 22 Sep 14 - 01:52 PM I always like these awards. |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Amos Date: 22 Sep 14 - 01:57 PM I love this. Just thing how many maidely lives would have had their vigor and compassion preserved for the good of mankind if this important research had been conducted a century ago: PUBLIC HEALTH PRIZE [CZECH REPUBLIC, JAPAN, USA, INDIA]: Jaroslav Flegr, Jan Havlíček and Jitka Hanušova-Lindova, and to David Hanauer, Naren Ramakrishnan, Lisa Seyfried, for investigating whether it is mentally hazardous for a human being to own a cat. |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Ebbie Date: 22 Sep 14 - 02:16 PM Ye gods! Even the Nobel prize awarders' brains have gone awry! Are these real awards? |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Bill D Date: 22 Sep 14 - 05:13 PM They're 'real' in the sense of a private group inventing a special category.... and many of the 'studies' are.. or were serious... but I think some studies were designed with this award in mind. |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Rapparee Date: 22 Sep 14 - 09:24 PM They have be real, certified science. I want to do a study on 'There are no atheists in foxholes,' but I don' want to do the research myself. I also have a proposal to study 'Money can't buy happiness' should anyone out there wish to fund my research. |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Bill D Date: 22 Sep 14 - 09:40 PM Many years ago, a study made the news for getting $30,000 to find out why children fell off of tricycles. Turned out, tricycles had only 3 wheels, had a high center of gravity, (MANY years ago) and children were sometimes careless & impulsive! Wow! It was ridiculed, but those low, plastic trikes appeared soon after. |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Ed T Date: 22 Sep 14 - 10:22 PM ""Dogs generally seem to be cheerful, happy-go-lucky characters, so you might expect that most would have an optimistic outlook on life. In fact some dogs are distinctly more pessimistic than others, new research shows."" |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: GUEST,Rahere Date: 23 Sep 14 - 06:56 AM No, the Ignobel prizes are NOT decided by the Norwegian/Swedish structures, but by the Annals of Improbable Research and Harvard. Nobel prizewinners often award the prizes and clean the stage, with the invaluable assistance of Miss Sweetie Poo. |
Subject: RE: BS: Science at its..... best? From: Rapparee Date: 23 Sep 14 - 10:29 AM Ah, yes. Miss Sweetie Poo. How could I forget her? She stands up if the speaker takes too long and says, "You're boring. Please stop." Much like some of the young ladies I dated many, many years ago. Don't forget the ritualistic paper airplanes. |
