Subject: BS: off-line Handwriting - Android ???????

anyone with experience of apps that don't need a connection?

My Galaxy 3 mini is used for other things than as a phone.

My Nokia N98 has wonderful off-line handwriting recognition and is part of the OS. I didn't teach it, but relied on the previous owner's settings. But I would like to replicate this on the Galaxy.

TIA

Just trying out 'Graffitti for Android'
It tries to do what the old Palm organiser did.

It's a while since my Palm died, so not sure if it works as well.

Quack!

Well!
The above took a bit of effort writing using the Palm emulation. I used to find it useful when I had a Palm, but it doesn't seem quite up to beating an on screen touch keyboard for speed or accuracy. You have to learn to write certain letters as particular new shapes for them to be recognised.

I could do with being able to use handwriting to text on my Android pad, so had another search and found this one which seems very promising. I seems to recognise lettering as I write it. It allows you to cross out or overwrite mistakes and add bits in between what you have already written.
At present it is even FREE.
Worth investigating further.

Quack!

p.s. I have hopefully fixed the link.

This ought to be listed as TECH not BS.

I installed the Myscript programme on my android pad (That's the place the little robot critter lives) and gave it a try last night.
It certainly has a good attempt at deciphering letters I write, and even manages to correctly translate some of my joined-up scrawl into typed words.
If you can only write half of a long word, it allows you to join the next bit on to the existing word.
It also brings up suggestions for the word you are writing, and sometimes you can click on these to correct errors. The suggestions are about as useful as ones the Google Keyboard Autocorrect comes up with (i.e. sometimes good, sometimes dreadful).

I need to use it a bit more before deciding if it is more useful for what I need compared with the on screen keyboard.

On a phone screen, the input area may be a it small.

Quack!
Geoff.

yea tried loading MyScript but as I don't use a SIM card and only connect via a BT Hot-Spot it seemed to tell me (eventually - try No. 5) it was doing it but since then nothing appeared.

I get the impression it needs on-line hook-up to function. The free thing is a bit of a clue, where is their revenue stream otherwise? Yea they can sell a pukka version, combine all apps into one. Waiting for smart phone RAM or other memory to catch-up with it's memory hog.

I will try another time. Upstairs, hanging out of the window and hope BT haven't switched me off mid-install. They do that on the laptop. Worth every penny I don't pay for it!

Nokia N97 is still my benchmark. Virtually no learning curve. Just have to remember to cross the T or dot the i to prevent it giving me L.

It might be worth checking the phone settings.
Look under " Language & input ".
It will tell you what input methods are installed.
If Stylus Beta is installed it allows you to select it as a possible input.

If it is there, you need to select it when writing. The method is to press and hold in the "text input field". It brings up a symbol in the " Notifications" area, which allows you to pull down a menu to choose it instead of the keyboard.

All this was typed with a finger. The app seems to be Getting Better at recognising my hand writing.

If you need a reliable download link, there are various public free networks. the big supermarkets all have their own
as do Macdonalds burger joints and Weatherspoons Pubs.

Thanks Mr Quack. But I ain'ta gonna be seen in Witherspoons or MuckDonalds anytime soon. I can try at the GF's. It is her hotspot log-in I am using to connect.
I will eventually try again, but at a more reliable connection.

Update!
I am finding fewer mistakes when the app converts my joined up handwriting to typed text.
I am starting to reach a speed where it does not take much different time including corrections compared to using an on-screen keyboard with the correcting I usually have to do using the typing.
In other words, quite impressed, and would suggest anyone with an Android tablet or phone should at least give it a try.
Quack!
GtD.
