Subject: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Bat Goddess Date: 19 Mar 15 - 06:42 AM Don! You didn't remind me (gently or otherwise)! I have been remiss, distracted by St. Patrick's Week (month...), not that I had any gigs, but plenty of friends did including at The Press Room where Tom and his band (Cuckoo's Nest, Great Bay Company) played from the first Press Room St. Patrick's Day in 1977 until 2009 (Tom lost his voice in June and was diagnosed with vocal cord cancer in September.) Tom Hall led the St. Patrick's evening entertainment for 33 years and I was there with him for 28 of those years. After great thought, I decided to stay home with my memories. I was at The Press Room in spirit...but I was time traveling. Anyway, the March sea music, forebitter, fo'c'sl ballad, and shanty sing is THIS SATURDAY, March 21, 2015 from 3:30 to 7:30 downstairs at The Press Room, 77 Daniel Street, Portsmouth, NH, USA. Hope a lot of you, now that "silly season" is over, will come out and sing for the sheer joy of singing. No stage, no microphones, just camaraderie, pub food, good beer, and even a bit of history and lore. See you Saturday! Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: ranger1 Date: 19 Mar 15 - 10:21 AM Hoping to make it. It's my birthday, and I can't think of too many other ways I'd rather spend it. |

Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: GUEST,Guest-Dianne Date: 20 Mar 15 - 03:01 PM And if we promise to sing Happy Birthday, will that encourage or discourage you from coming. |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: ranger1 Date: 20 Mar 15 - 03:03 PM Encourage. I love birthdays! |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: ranger1 Date: 20 Mar 15 - 03:05 PM But you'll have to come up with another version than the one most people sing. Tom Hall hated that song and it wouldn't be seemly to sing it at a session he founded. |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: SINSULL Date: 20 Mar 15 - 04:27 PM Happy Birthday, Tami. I will lift a glass of wine for you from from my sunroom. Back is still out. Started new meds today. whoo whoo |

Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Bat Goddess Date: 21 Mar 15 - 08:38 AM We NEVER sing that insipid and stupid "Happy Birthday". You'll get a happy B.D. via the Halleluyah Chorus and "Why Were You Born So Beautiful ". Maybe an SCA version, too. "That song" will never be sung if I can help it...and I CAN Cuz I'm the boss lady (QFE). Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: ranger1 Date: 21 Mar 15 - 10:43 AM Birthday plans nearly derailed by car problems. Charley Noble has rescued the latter part of my day and will be picking me up on his way down. Thanks, Charley! |

Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: ranger1 Date: 22 Mar 15 - 09:32 AM It was a great session! My favorite part was singing "C is for Cookie" with Scott and his son. |

Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Mar 15 - 11:50 AM Okay, while I'm peeling and chopping vegetables, I need to sit a bit, so I'll get a start on my scribe duties. By the way, Charlie, I just discovered you were expected at last October's shanty sing, but didn't show up (but you had a "note"). So until yesterday, we hadn't seen you since September. Yesterday's crew was me (Linn Schulz aka Bat Goddess), Jeri, Dianne Lavoie, Steve Willard, Barry O'Brien, Tami Bill (ranger1), Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble), Mike Modern, Don Hale, Peter Hale, Dave Nunes, Stephen Craft, Scott Bogle (and family), Lance, Lou and Sharon Stamas, and Gail and Janice. To be continued... Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: ranger1 Date: 22 Mar 15 - 12:42 PM Nope, Charlie was there in November. I rode down with him and Judy. |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Jeri Date: 22 Mar 15 - 01:45 PM He's listed in the official November meeting minutes as well. |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Mar 15 - 02:44 PM I just checked again, Tami. You're right -- Charlie was last at the session in November, but he had missed the October singaround. Oh, and Steve Smith came in around 7 pm. Justine had a conference, but was going to try to get to the session before the end. Hutch had an early gig in Massachusetts, but hoped to get to the session before the end. But, unfortunately, neither of them made it before we wrapped at 7:30. And here's what we sang yesterday -- 1. Pace-Egging Song - Dianne Lavoie 2. Constant Lovers - Steve Willard 3. Sailor's Prayer - Barry O'Brien 4. Flying Off to Sunny Venezuela - Charlie Ipcar 5. Tequila Sheila - Linn Schulz (tequila seemed appropriate at this point) 6. Yangtze River - Peter Hale 7. Wild Colonial Boy - Don Hale I pointed out that back in the '90s at the Press Room trad session, we'd often do this to the tune of "Ghost Riders In the Sky" with a chorus of "Toorah-li-ay, toorah-li-oh, the wild colonial boy". 8. A verse of "Wild Colonial Boy" to the tune of "Pinball Wizard" - Pete Hale 9. Ye Mourners All - Stephen Craft 10. Quare Bungle Rye - Mike Modern 11. Seven Subs of Severn - Charlie Ipcar 12. Great West Road - Dave Nunes Rufus likes to sit on the UPS next to the computer and just now he almost turned it off. Actually, as it turned out he turned off the modem -- my computer continued to work, but I didn't discover for awhile that I had no internet connection or phone. Cats! 13. Isle au Haut - Dianne Lavoie Which always reminds me of a waitress at Allison's in Dock Square, Kennebunkport, in the late '70s. When tourists asked her, "What do you DO around here?" (indicating the town with a sweep of an arm). She put her hand on her hip and replied, "Well. In the summer we fish and fuck. And in the winter, you can't fish." 14. Alabama John Cherokee - Barry O'Brien 15. Rattlin' Bog - Steve Willard (good job! good job) 16. Torn A', Rippit A' - Linn Schulz 17. All Coiled Down - Don Hale 18. Old Dunne's Dunne (The Dunne Song) - Pete Hale 19. Run Come See Jerusalem - Marty Stock 20. Noah Built the Ark (Sitting On the River By the Levee) - Stephen Craft 21. Bheir Me O - Mike Modern Okay, we've got one birthday -- Tami's. And one belated birthday (it was yesterday) -- Gail's. So we had to sing. 22. Happy Birthday to the Halleluyah Chorus - Linn 23. Why Were You Born So Beautiful? - Linn 24. Isn't It Grand - Pete Hale We forgot the SCA Birthday Dirge. 25. Rhyme of Charon the Ferryman - Charlie Ipcar 26. Five Constipated Men In the Bible - Dianne Lavoie 27. Haul Down, Billy O'Shea - Barry O'Brien 28. Passle of super short songs - Mike (who was leaving to go to Kennebunkport), Dianne, Linn 29. Patrick's Arrival - Pete Hale 30. The Preacher and the Bear - Stephen Craft Somewhere in here Stephan left, saying he had to go to Kennebunkport. 31. Finnegan's Wake - Scott Bogle 32. The Rolling Mills of New Jersey – Marty Stock Who then left saying HE had to go to Kennebunkport... 33. Pay Me My Money Down - Barry O'Brien 34. The Rogue Time-Police - Charlie Ipcar 35. East St. Louis Blues - Dianne Lavoie 36. Three Drunken Maidens - Linn Schulz 37. The Natchez and Delta Queen Race - Charlie Ipcar 38. Plum Island National Anthem - Linn Schulz 39. Banks of Newfoundland - Scott Bogle 40. Greenland Whale Fisheries - Don Hale 41. Fathom the Bowl - Dianne Lavoie 42. The Rosabella - Dianne Lavoie & Don Hale 43. Mobile Bay (Roll the Cotton Down) - Charlie Ipcar 44. Maggie May - Linn Schulz (Odd without accompaniment.) 45. Mingalay Boat Song - Scott Bogle 46. Farewell to Tarwaithie - Don Hale 47. Clear Away the Morning - Dianne Lavoie 48. Never Turn a Blind Eye To the Storm - Charlie Ipcar 49. The Lobster - Linn Schulz (Thought I'd have to leave off the last verse, but the kids disappeared for a bit.) 50. Marching Inland - Dianne Lavoie 51. Norwegian kids' song "A jeg vet en seter" (Oh, I Know a Meadow) - Tami Bill 52. Northwest Passage - Scott Bogle 53. Johnny Lad - Linn Schulz 54. West Indies Blues - Charlie Ipcar 55. Alphabet Song - Scott's son 56. Number 9 Song From Sesame Street - Dianne Lavoie 57. Outward Bound - Don Hale 58. If Not For the Whiskey - Dave Nunes 59. Gin, Gin Was Mother's Ruin - Linn Schulz 60. I'm Cool, Cool, Cool - Dianne Lavoie 61. Nelson's Prayer - Don Hale and Company |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: ranger1 Date: 22 Mar 15 - 02:52 PM You forgot "C is for Cookie", Scott and I sang it after "The Alphabet Song". |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: GUEST,Guest-Dianne Date: 22 Mar 15 - 02:53 PM Don't you hate it when that happens???? Thanks Linn, but it was Dave who led Fathom the Bowl. Dianne |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: ranger1 Date: 22 Mar 15 - 03:03 PM I also found the actual title for the number 9 song. It's called Number 9 Martian Beauty. Posted the video on Linn's facebook page. |

Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Charley Noble Date: 22 Mar 15 - 04:41 PM Wasn't it grand...to be singing with all of you again! Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Mar 15 - 05:22 PM Thanks for the corrections and additions! I'm certainly not perfect and in the lovely confusion of singing, the pen gets twisted askew occasionally. Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: ranger1 Date: 22 Mar 15 - 05:52 PM Linn, you do a lot better than I would! |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Bat Goddess Date: 22 Mar 15 - 06:29 PM It's not easy being German, obsessive, and have a compulsion to document life. Sigh. Thanks for indulging me. Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: CET Date: 23 Mar 15 - 06:56 PM Sixty-one songs! Damn! |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Bat Goddess Date: 24 Mar 15 - 07:02 AM Edmund, I was going to say that's about average, but after I checked, I see we're much more likely to be in the high 50s...sometimes even in the 40s. This list would have been higher if I'd included the "short songs" from the medley, and I think, perhaps, the count is as high as it is because of the inclusion of short children's and Sesame Street songs towards the end. Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 24 Mar 15 - 12:05 PM 62,counting "C Is For Cookie"............. Don |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Craft Advisory Date: 24 Mar 15 - 04:59 PM Like cannon fodder, propelling me into a good time. Minor correction, the first song I did was Ye Mariners All. Also, I never made it to Kennebunk, but it sounded like a good idea. Actually another birthday party deep in Boston. Tried to relate the Five Constipated Men in the Bible to my friends, but their fingers would not leave their ears. |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Bat Goddess Date: 25 Mar 15 - 09:46 AM Lots of controversy right from when the song was first written down as to whether it's Mariners or mourners. First (and usually) transcribed as Mar'ners. Tom leaned towards meaning mourners, sung Mar'ners. "Correct" either way. Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room Shanty Sing, Portsmouth From: Craft Advisory Date: 26 Mar 15 - 08:11 PM Ah well, it can go either way, be it Mariners in the Sea Shanty theme or Mourners in the Religious Irish Drinking theme. |
