Subject: RE: Folklore: joe stead seeks election From: Joe Offer Date: 21 Mar 15 - 07:17 PM Joe's Website [ http://www.joestead.com/ ] is interesting. It says he's running in the Calder Valley General Election in May, 2015; but it doesn't say what office he's running for. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: joe stead seeks election From: GUEST Date: 21 Mar 15 - 08:21 PM It looks like he's going for the House of Commons to me. Somehow I think he is trying to be the first person to enter that place with honest intentions since 1605. |
Subject: RE: joe stead seeks election From: Joe Offer Date: 22 Mar 15 - 12:36 AM I left this thread in the music section because Joe Stead is a folksinger, but I guess some moderator saw otherwise. Joe is quite a performer. Here's Much maligned capitalistic boss, in which Joe looks very much like Leadfingers to me.... and Just Another Folk Singer, Joe's tribute to Pete Seeger. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: joe stead seeks election From: MGM·Lion Date: 22 Mar 15 - 12:55 AM Joe == Standing in the General Election can only mean aiming to be elected to the House of Commons as a Member of Parliament [MP] for a constituency. He is standing as an Independent, or at least for a party of his own invention, World Peace Through Song, rather than as candidate for one of the main parties who have any chance of forming the government or providing significant opposition. He will be lucky to save his deposit IMO, for which the candidate must receive a certain percentage of the votes cast: at present the sum is £500, and the percentage required is 5%; but power to his elbow. It is this sort of quixoticism which gives our political system such balls as it does possess. I guess his election meetings will be mainly sung. Wish I lived in that constituency so could vote for him. ≈M≈ |

Subject: RE: joe stead seeks election From: The Sandman Date: 22 Mar 15 - 05:46 AM which reminds me, william bill boaks Over the years, Boaks's political label changed. In one election, he stood as the "Trains & Boats & Planes" candidate - the title of a contemporary popular song which he found it apt to adopt - but after revisions to electoral law allowed candidates to have a six-word description of their candidature on the ballot paper, he eventually settled on "Public Safety Democratic Monarchist White Resident". Boaks's main concern was public safety on the roads. His other political views tended towards old-fashioned Conservatism, anti-Communism and an increasing distrust of "The Establishment" (as he put it), the latter fuelled by his frequent court appearances. Journalists, some of whom seem to have been scared of him, often expressed confusion over his claims, as they never quite knew whether he was being serious or simply having fun at their expense. For example, when deciding not to fight the Croydon North West by-election in 1981, he said that he would never fight in Croydon as he believed that the "Communist menace" was never a threat there. He also said on at least one occasion that he believed that homosexuals should be debarred from the Civil Service, as he thought they were more vulnerable to blackmail by foreign power Lieutenant Commander William George Boaks DSC (25 May 1904 – 4 April 1986) was a British Royal Navy officer who became an eccentric political campaigner for road safety. He died at the age of 81 as a result of a road traffic accident. He jointly holds the record for the fewest votes recorded for a candidate in a British by-election, taking five at a by-election in 1982.[1] |
Subject: RE: joe stead seeks election From: GUEST,Ellen Vannin Date: 22 Mar 15 - 09:46 AM It's one of the joys of the British system, that anyone who can raise £500 can stand, even if they believe that the world is run by giant lizards, or they are just having fun (The Monster Raving Loony Party). It also allows single issue candidates (I saw one once for the 'Stop [named school] expelling [named student] Party).) Many, of course, are totally barking, but not all. Just occasionally, someone actually gets elected - Martin Bell, for example, or the doctor whose sole issue was to stop the local hospital being closed. I'm looking forward to the lists of candidates being published so I can see what we've got this time. |
