Personal attacks are the culprit. Ad hominem arguments againt the person. It basically means that one person tries to disprove the others persons position on someting based on their beliefs or personality. This is a logical falacy. It is not the way to arrive at a clear understanding of something.
The true purpose of a forum is for people to give their opinion, read the opinions of others and distill them all down into what they percieve as the truth. They respect the opinions of others and take them into consideration to see if they might want to modify their own opinion to what they believe is the truth. Their perception of the truth might shift based on the opinion of others. A study of logical falacys can show one how to evaluate opinions for truth vs logical falacy.
Unfortunately people have a tendancy to want to group together and adopt the opinion of others without question out of fear. As if being in the larger group will be safer. Tribal politics vs independant thinking. A good example of this was the belief that tomatoes were poison.
It you do not agree with someone elses opinion, respond with with your reasoning and facts, statistics or what ever your basis for you opinion is, not just defaming the person with the opinion.
To do so is only proof that your opinion is based on something other than a factual base.

Well, not all opinions are worthy of respect. Unfortunately, we see a fair amount of racism and homophobia rearing their ugly heads here. Sometimes it's hard to dissect the opinion away from the objectionable person who propagated it. I'm trying to keep away from name-calling these days but I still do bloody and bugger, etc. Sometimes, harsh words and directness can be confused with personal attacks, a mistake worth avoiding.

I respect opinions of racists and homophobes. I assume they believe what they say and point out logically why I believe it to be racist or homophobic without making a personal attack. The personal attacks are contaigous.
It is possible that a despicable person could speak the truth sometimes. Likewise the must trusted person could say something that is wrong.

Yeah, now go back and look at WHO is doing the 'name-calling'....and you'll find the real bigots!...They call people 'bigots', 'homophobes', 'racists', 'misogynists', and so on and so forth. AND if by now, you haven't seen and heard enough crap, and been disappointed, and disillusioned by now, maybe you ought to try out a little honesty...and DEMAND it from the people who deliver you their bogus 'talking points''...
