Subject: BS: Songs at my wake From: gnu Date: 03 Apr 15 - 06:13 PM As I contemplate my impending demise, I have decided to list the tunes I want my cousins to sing. First tune, sung loudly and with passion... Isn't It Grand Boys October Winds (my version) Jug Of This The 23rd of June May Morning Dew The Parting Glass (my version) No Rain by Blind Melon (yes, that does seem odd eh?) And then the lads can go nuts on the geetars n fiddles n mandolins and whistles n sing whatever the hell they wanna entertain me with. How's by ye? |

Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 03 Apr 15 - 11:42 PM I really don't want a single penny pocketed by the exploitive parasitic funeral business... I've an intention one day before it's too late to seriously research donating my body to science, medicine, or any other organization which will dispose of my remains for free, or as cheaply as possible.. Though the mrs might not be to happy to comply with this, completely ignore my stubborn beliefs and still pay a small fortune to get me cremated... Whatever, I obstinately want "Windmill in old Amsterdam (I saw a mouse) " by Ronnie Hilton" followed by "Bike" from Pink Floyd's first LP [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmW17QvUhRM ] played at some point in the recycling process to annoy any solemn presiding bureaucrats / petty officials and funeral directors, and to cheer up as many mourners as possible... |
Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: Joe Offer Date: 04 Apr 15 - 01:38 AM I want free beer and lots of singing at my wake. What's sung, is up to the singers; but I hope they have a good time. Since I became part of the folk community, I've been to some terrific wakes. But most didn't serve beer. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: gnu Date: 04 Apr 15 - 12:11 PM Oh... I don't intend to be at my wake except in spirit. When my wake is held, I will be at the medical school at Dalhousie U in Halifax, NS.ca. It's a great deal! They keep you for three years max and then cremate you and ship the ashes to the person(s) you designate. Free urn too. Unfortunately, I live in NB.ca and you GOTTA be buried... money racket! Soooo, I am gonna hafta find someone who will take them in a province that allows scattering my scatterbrains. Then, that someone can get them to one of my cousins so I can RIP at The Top of the Trailer Road. It's a height of land near the Alagash and Mountain Heaths where I used to camp in October and November. Amazing and peaceful spot waaaay back in the bush. I miss being in the bush. The people there are so... so... not there. Gee. Three song (titles) right there! Might be a long night tonight. |

Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: Joe Offer Date: 05 Apr 15 - 09:43 PM Well, I was thinking about this....will I have to get a liquor license for my funeral if there's free beer? Hey, if I'm dead, they can't arrest me for serving alcohol without a license....can they? -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: Rob Naylor Date: 05 Apr 15 - 09:44 PM - My mate Paul's version of Ewan MacColl's "Joy of Living" - British Sea Power's "Remember Me" - Fairport Convention's "Meet On The Ledge" A couple more that I've not settled on yet, plus hopefully some live tunes sets from surviving friends. And LOADS of beer! Never been to a wake without lots of beer and/or whisky! When my friend Phil died his instructions were: "No religion. Loads of free beer". He left £1000 behind the bar of a local pub. When my climbing buddy "Buzzard" died we had a celebration of his life too, at a local hostelry, with songs, stories and oceans of beer. When another climbing mate, Ray, died, we had a fantastic weekend-long wake. The "service" was in the local village hall where he lived, with the coffin on a trestle at the front and each eulogist rssting his/her drink on the coffin whilst talking (Ray's instructions!). After the cremation we climbed the mountain at the back of his house and scattered his ashes at the top, to the accompaniment of a piper playing a lament and numerous shots of whisky. Music, food, more drink and dancing at his house in the evening. Most of the funerals and wakes I've been to have been joyous celebrations of fully-lived lives rather than miserable lamentations. |
Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: Gurney Date: 06 Apr 15 - 03:27 PM A LOT of English Traddy songs. I was the only one who liked them. I used to sing them unaccompanied. Years later I found that I'd been singing them a capella. Load of rubbish. No-one would sing THEM in a chapel. |
Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: Ed T Date: 06 Apr 15 - 04:33 PM "if I'm dead, they can't arrest me for serving alcohol without a license....can they?"" If there is an after-life, there are likely a big after-life bureaucracy to deal with there also.;) |

Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: MGM·Lion Date: 12 Apr 15 - 03:11 AM This is the second recent song-based thread that has been posted below the line as a BS. Why? What gives? As to thread: shan't be there, so whatevs those left behind who loved me might feel like -- anything or nothing, according to their wills and tastes. Any old how: tho 83 next month, not planning to go just yet. Watch this space! ≈M≈ |
Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: DMcG Date: 12 Apr 15 - 04:22 AM If there is an after-life, there are likely a big after-life bureaucracy to deal with there also.;) Perhaps the worst vision of hell I've heard yet - makes flames etc seem mild! As for songs, "what's the Life of a Man?" Is one I'd like - I had it at my 60th birthday celebrations. John Kirkpatrick"s "Dust to Dust" would be another. Then the Waterson's sing a lot of reviivalist songs that in some cases were written specifically for funerals, such as "Sleep on, Beloved" |
Subject: RE: BS: Songs at my wake From: gnu Date: 12 Apr 15 - 12:28 PM Well, I put it below the line so MY posts could be (kinda) BS and not offend any of them thar uppity types, eh? I hope this thread doesn't get toooo serious like. Don't get me wrong... serious posts are always welcome but I like the humourous BS ones too. Hmmm... now *I* am confused. |
