Subject: BS: Want to buy a bow From: kendall Date: 03 May 15 - 07:51 PM I was an archer with King Henry at the battle of Azincourt, and more recently just a back lawn dub. Something is telling me to get a bow and take up archery again. Anyone have a bow they don't want? Prefer wood, but might take to a compound. Arthritis limits me to 25 pound draw weight. |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: gnu Date: 03 May 15 - 09:10 PM At your (and my) age, go with a compound. You will get the feel of a long bow with far little effort. Just one caution... get everything set up by a REAL bowmaster EVEN if you buy a new bow. It might cost $40 or $50 but it will be well worth it. Trust me. If you buy at Cabela's or some such, email me about that. |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: gnu Date: 03 May 15 - 09:13 PM BTW, it's great exercise. Kinda like darts at the pub without the beer and you walk a lot more. |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: Rapparee Date: 03 May 15 - 10:06 PM If you tie a string to your arrow you don't have to walk out to retrieve it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 03 May 15 - 10:15 PM Craigslist has a listing for 20# breakdown recurve bow for sale somewhere in Maine. (CLICK HERE) The listing's 16 days old, but it hasn't been taken down so it may still be available. |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: Thompson Date: 04 May 15 - 05:40 AM That's the way to do it. |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: maeve Date: 04 May 15 - 07:04 AM Kendall- you have access to ash, willow, hickory, juniper, oak, cedar, and birch for making your own bow, and milkweed or dogbane for a cordage bow string. Add some native Arrow wood for bows and a few chicken or turkey feathers for fletching and you're all set. :D You're welcome. |

Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: Stu Date: 04 May 15 - 07:30 AM I've got a Bickerstaff longbow made of hickory backed with lemonwood and it's superb. 50lb draw and great to shoot. They're in the UK but are probably the best longbow makers in the country, but I'm sure they ship to the US. Bickerstaff Bows |

Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: Rapparee Date: 04 May 15 - 10:06 AM Picture this, if you dare: Kendall running around in his back yard wearing naught but a sash-like thing covering his private parts, a cute little recurve bow in one hand and some heart-tipped arrows in the other, and as the police take him away he's screaming, "But I'm Cupid!" Then he's put away, because anyone running around in so little in Maine in February has to be nuts. |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: Bill D Date: 04 May 15 - 10:31 AM Find some Osage Orange (Bodoc..or Bois d'arc)...well, not where you live, but someone will sell you bow stock. It is the only wood that will make a good longbow (besides Yew) without laminating. |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: maeve Date: 04 May 15 - 11:42 AM Huh! Rap, anyone running around in Maine in February is nuts anyway. Dave the Gnome- Aha! But we have yeeeew toooo. At a 25 pound draw weight we're not talking longbows here, are we? . |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: Rapparee Date: 04 May 15 - 04:20 PM We called 'em Thorn Apples. The fruit is about the size of a softball and will make a very nasty dent at anything you throw it at, such as your brother's head. |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: Bill D Date: 04 May 15 - 08:40 PM Hedge apples... whatever. I got in a 'wee' bit of trouble 63 years ago when we were trying to roll 'em in the street so cars would run over them. Mine bounced & hit the side of a car. Got a lecture.... People in Kansas use the warped trees as cheap hedge rows to keep the cows in. Someone once claimed that if Osage (Maclura pomifera)were frown in a remote forest on the Amazon, people would send expeditions and charge a fortune for the wood. It is fun to work with. |

Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: GUEST,Dave the Gnome Date: 05 May 15 - 04:34 AM Didn't work to well for the French at Azincourt and Cressy, Guest! |
Subject: RE: BS: Want to buy a bow From: Rapparee Date: 05 May 15 - 09:25 AM Worked pretty good on Richard the Lion Hearted, though. But crossbow users are always in a such tearing hurry that they don't eat a good breakfast, which is what makes them cross. |
