Is it likely that there will be any folk music and song this year?

There will be plenty of folk music and song this year just as there was last year. The free maritime concert will be held on the deck of one of the keels this year as the Maritime Museum Courtroom is not available. There will be plenty of folk music in the widest sense of the words and a better percentage of traditional than many other festivals.

I made the above comment on the basis of the online programme for last year which did nothing to persuade me that a trip to Hull would be worthwhile.

Fair enough. The programme didn't do justice to what was on offer. The problem is we get limited funding and it comes in too late to organise things properly especially advertising and booking guests.

Last year we had a great free maritime concert in the Maritime Museum Court Room, we had half a dozen historic boats in the Marina. There were dance teams, several venues and stages in marquees. Plenty of singaround and session opportunities. Workshops there were. There hasn't been a ceilidh yet but we're trying to build it up. Tell us what you'd like and we'll do our best. If I remember rightly the main guests were Martin Simpson and The Young Uns, previous year Eliza Carthy and Saul Rose. There's a lot of young talent locally but we're no Sheffield........Yet!

Martin Simpson - that's the man that sang Heartbreak Hotel at the Folk awards is it not?
To be honest I am underwhelmed by the Young 'Uns so obviously the headliners did not attract me either.
Now the Wilsons just might tempt me but perhaps not as they are everywhere this year, unless you could manage to get Shona Donaldson and Paul Anderson down as well.

The Wilsons were top of the list for this year but unfortunately they are booked elsewhere.

I met Bill way back in the 60s in his native North and our paths crossed again, after 40-0dd years, more recently at sessions in Rawcliffe, East Yorks which is closer to my area.

Yes, quite, these things take time. We'll try to keep you informed here as things take more shape. Most of it's still under negotiation at the moment. I'm told there's more info on Facebook.

Never had the pleasure of visiting the Hull Festival before. For many years I enjoyed the Fringe Festival in Beverley. However, it seems that this year there is a new broom sweeping through and I don't know anyone, and they've moved it to boot! ( or the Racecourse? ). Will probably give it a miss this year and wait for my old comrades to return it to it's former glory. Considering "Hull Festival" if I can find somewhere to park my Caravan.

I'm not sure where you are getting this 'new broom' idea. Maggie and I have been running singarounds at Beverley for many years and we are running them again this year. Musicians sessions have been in the Tiger since the year dot and that will be the same this year. The Sun Inn has always featured heavily on the fringe and that hasn't changed either.

Yes the main festival has moved to the racecourse but that was due to circumstances beyond control.

Hull Folk Festival will have a healthy fringe (singarounds and sessions) and also plenty of free concerts.

We (Alterego) have been going to Beverley fringe for many years and have only graced the main festival once. This year we volunteered to run a session. Sorry if the 'new broom' idea is upsetting people but as I understand it we are the only fringe session runners who haven't been doing it for years! We will be joining in the other sessions as usual and look forward to seeing Maggie & Les, and all the others again. Without wishing to upset anyone we have been involved in various folk organisations and clubs for years and for at least the last 15 years, along with many others, have been very concerned that there are no younger people coming forward to take over these things as time marches on, and the stalwarts start to drop off. That's why things eventually don't happen any more.

The age-gap problem is one that should have been addressed many years ago. Those few areas (like Sheffield) that made great efforts to include people of all ages are now thriving, but for the rest of us it seems to be too little too late. Hull Festival is at least trying to include everybody, even if it upsets some people.

Good luck to all at the Beverley fringe. I'm otherwise occupied this year or I'd be there.

Les from Hull. Thank you for your reply. I am sorry if I don't remember your good self. I wonder if you remember the notables of years gone by, since you are a stalwart of the Festival? I remember the Tiger and The Sun and the Monks Walk etc. I remember Mick, Roger and John and Pete and Roy. I seem to be lacking in the knowledge of; where have they all gone? Also, who are the new hosts and hostesses? Things change, I know only too well, and all I am seeking is a little enlightenment. Which Festival would you recommend I try?

Caravan Cal - it's true that the Beverley Fringe seemed a little light this year, no Roger (he was away and anyway moved out of Beverly, as did Pete). But there were enough of us to have the usual good time.

Hull Folk Festival has plenty of local support. Mick will be there with both of the bands he sings with and there's plenty of free stuff available - songs, tunes, dancing and spoken word.

Beverley was a bit of a disappointment compared to previous years. Managed a few tunes on me flute in "Tiger" and "Sun Inn". Wasn't feeling strong enough to carry the ole fiddle, the mile or so, from where I parked the ole Caravan up. Will consider the Hull Festival when fully recovered. Happy Trails Les!

Good to see that the weekend is happening (a few others have fallen by the wayside).

It looks as though family matters could prevent us being there but, then again, maybe not.

Have to be honest and say that not alot attracts us but it could be good to meet up with old friends.

Good luck guys. I'm gutted that I won't be there this year since I enjoyed myself last time when I stayed over for the whole weekend.

Unfortunately, I messed up the dates when I agreed to run a session here in Knaresborough on Saturday afternoon as part of the FEVA festival (see separate thread). Hopefully I'll see you next year when I get a new calendar.

Well done Les and Maggie. It was a very enjoyable singaround that you ran last night at The Minerva. There were some fine singers. They were a lot of fun and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. I see on the website that you are at the Minerva again tonight:
"7pm – Late The Minerva (inside) Singaround with Les & Maggie"
We won't be able to come because we are off to see Martin Carthy and Jim Eldon at The Kardomah. Have another great night!

Another great day. The afternoon musicians' session was on the hatches of keel Evangeline and it got to be her turn to go down the Marina to pick up her share of the free diesel, so we carried on playing while the boatmen fuelled her up.

What a great bonus having Venture in the line! She's a Paull shrimper and she looked great with her sail up. Alan put Phyllis's sails up for the day as well.

Many thanks to the organisers, skippers and Marina for a great weekend.

Thanks to everyone involved for a fantastic weekend!

This year I managed to drag Domesday Morris along for the Kingston upon Hull Day of Dance.

I had a great time. Two of the highlights of the whole weekend for me were the impromptu session with Rackaback and Domesday Morris in The Old Black Boy on Saturday night and the final singaround in the Minerva on Sunday, which was tremendous fun.

Thanks also to those who helped my mum to celebrate her birthday over the festival weekend!

I wish I'd seen more of it. Totally forgot it was on. Went cycling to Hornsea from Hull on Saturday, got back and decided to wander down to have a look at the Humber. Walked straight into the folk festival. Knew something was up when I saw someone that looked a great deal like Martin Carthy sitting at a table with a guitar case.

Loved the choice of beer in the stand at the Minerva. Lucky to have made it to the station in one piece, in retrospect. Seemed very nice. Will go properly if I'm still in the area next year.
