I'm looking for information about the background of this song-- actually two versions-- one as sung by Paul Brady and one as sung by Triona/the Bothy Band. I'm guessing they might be related to the Prickelly Bush, a Child ballad, but they are quite different from the (English) versions I know.

Anyone know anything about their history and/or where these singers got their versions. I heard/learned them long ago and no longer have access to the LPs to check liner notes.

Eleanor Long - The Maid and the Hangman and other articles trace the similarity if not the line of descent. I can give further details if asked.

Thank you John. Got sidetracked by life but I'm back again and appreciate the info. I'll try to track it down.
