Subject: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: GUEST,mg Date: 28 Jun 15 - 06:57 PM and it has to be stainless steel. Any such thing? In US? I have been googling and not finding much. New preferred I hope to have replaced or failed to replace my last watch battery. Or is there an inexpensive watch where a person can easily get the battery out and replaced. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Stilly River Sage Date: 28 Jun 15 - 07:08 PM Go look at Amazon. They have everything. And if they don't, try the Vermont Country Store. They have lots of old-fashioned things. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Mrrzy Date: 28 Jun 15 - 07:27 PM I had a Timex that made it through washer and dryer - more than once - lasted 22 years. Bought another, and the pressure difference on the plane to the Far East plus the humidity when we got there killed it in a matter of days. Maybe they are making them like they used to, again. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Gurney Date: 28 Jun 15 - 07:35 PM Mary, I have no difficulty replacing my own batteries, and I've never found one that is difficult. The only difficult part is opening the back of the watch, which usually involves a semi-sharp knife to lever it off. You could cut yourself there, or damage the gold-plating. The batteries that come on a card of various sizes aren't too long-lasting, though. About a year is good. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Steve Shaw Date: 28 Jun 15 - 08:17 PM The only watch I ever wear is a Casio with a traditional round face with proper numbers. It has a stainless steel back and a rather handsome black plastic strap. The only metal that touches your skin is that stainless steel back. I'm allergic to other metals used in watches and their straps. It keeps perfect time for four to five years until the battery goes. You can replace the battery, but it costs over half the price of a new watch and renders the watch not as waterproof. I bought two of these watches last month for eleven quid including postage from eBay. It's a Casio MQ24-7BLL. The face is small enough for a woman and big enough for a man. I've been using them for many years. I regard them as a bit of a classic. |

Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 28 Jun 15 - 09:28 PM Citizen's Eco-Drive. I've had mine for over 10 years and it has kept perfect time, even on cloudy days :). No winding and no battery change outs. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: GUEST, ^*^ Date: 28 Jun 15 - 09:57 PM I killed a watch trying to get the back onto one, it simply refused to seat itself. The attempt broke the crystal. I think you might find that if you go to a store with a jewelry counter and ask very nicely someone there will change your battery for you. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Stanron Date: 28 Jun 15 - 10:15 PM I've been using a Seiko automatic for years. Back in the 80s I got a Swatch electric watch that I liked but it died. The battery driven watch I got after that seemed to short out against my skin when I sweated in summer. Since then it's been wind up or automatic with automatic as the big favourite. They might be a bit big for a ladies watch but maybe they make a smaller version for the fairer sex. And they are not expensive. I paid £40 for my last one, five or ten years ago. The one I had before that died when I broke the glass. It's stainless steel strap and body, plain white face and shows the day and date. As long as you move it works. The only downside is you have to adjust the date for months shorter than 31 days. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Jun 15 - 10:27 PM Timex has been using 10-year batteries in recent years. Watches cost $30-$40, including a metal band. It's hard to see how you can beat that. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: GUEST,mg Date: 29 Jun 15 - 12:59 AM thanks everyone. i forgot to say $30 or so. i will look at some of those little tools that supposedly open the case. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: GUEST,Jonm at work Date: 29 Jun 15 - 06:32 AM Had a Seiko automatic for 32 years, never more than a minute a day out. It had a period when I had a Kinetic one as well, since that was waterproof; kept both going until the Kinetic died and was unrepairable. Got a Citizen EcoDrive one in parallel with the auto until that died. They charge from the sun but do have a battery and when that goes, after about ten years, the watch is dead. Sent the Seiko to be cleaned, it keeps better time now and bought another Seiko automatic which is waterproof, so I can swim in it etc. However, for a budget of $30, I'd suggest a cheapo battery watch for a fiver and replace the whole thing (or give it away) every three years, before the battery goes! |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 29 Jun 15 - 06:48 AM Considering your budget a Timex Marathon might be a good way to go. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Greg F. Date: 29 Jun 15 - 08:52 AM Less than $30 U.S. ? Good luck. If ya buy junk, it'll work just like junk. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Steve Shaw Date: 29 Jun 15 - 08:57 AM Oi, Greg, that Casio that everyone's studiously ignoring since I mentioned it is not junk, honest. I swear by 'em (never at 'em)! |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 29 Jun 15 - 09:09 AM I've been saltwater kayaking with a Timex Marathon for about a dozen years now and it hasn't failed yet. It has proven to be water resistant and I think it cost $40. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Stanron Date: 29 Jun 15 - 09:26 AM There are some very cheap automatic watches coming out of Hong Kong on ebay at the moment. You have to check the size. I've seen one advertised as a woman's watch with a display diameter of almost 4 centimetres. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Stanron Date: 29 Jun 15 - 09:45 AM Just spotted this one on ebay now |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Stilly River Sage Date: 29 Jun 15 - 09:50 AM Joe is right - the last watch I bought has a 10 year battery. I got it online for under $30. You don't need to try to open it because by the time the battery dies you'll be ready to buy a new one. |
Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: Dave the Gnome Date: 29 Jun 15 - 09:54 AM A bloke on the street tried to sell me a watch the other day. I said, "Is this a wind up?" :D tG |

Subject: RE: BS: women's waterproof windup watch From: ChanteyLass Date: 29 Jun 15 - 04:31 PM I used to wear a self-winding waterproof watch, but it died and I've been unable to find a replacement. Vermont Country Store does have a wind-up woman's watch, but the description doesn't say that it's waterproof, and it costs $79.95! When the battery in my watch needs replacing, I bring it to a local pawnshop where a worker replaces it and just charges for the battery. I think jewelry stores and any stores with a jewelry department might do that, too, if you ask. I prefer men's watches. Most men's products are more sturdily made, the numbers are easier to read, and even the dots between the numbers are easier to read. I also like watches with metal stretch bands. My hands are the only small things about me, and non-stretch bands slip right off unless links are removed. Good luck getting a new watch! |
