Subject: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Spleen Cringe Date: 02 Jul 15 - 04:24 PM Dustin Brown, eh? What a pleasure watch him play Nadal. A well deserved and hugely entertaining win! Nifty Dennis Brown tattoo, too... |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: akenaton Date: 02 Jul 15 - 04:29 PM Deadly service, but doubt if he has the consistency to go all the way. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: MGM·Lion Date: 02 Jul 15 - 04:51 PM Excellent placing and subtle dropshots. Enjoyable and entertainining match. Looking forward to Heather Watson playing Serena Williams tomorrow. One pundit mentioned having heard someone remark that Serena probably the greatest tennis player of all time. Such superlatives always a bit pinch-of-salty; but she is certainly a most distinguished player and exceptional talent. ≈M≈ |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Richard Bridge Date: 02 Jul 15 - 06:28 PM Yes, very taken with Dustin Brown. A welcome change from the "Ice-Borg" era of defensive topspin. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: MGM·Lion Date: 03 Jul 15 - 12:54 AM Further to my last post, mind: One feels that Watson not in with too much of a chance. But I recall, 11 years ago, apostrophising a very young woman about to start a final against that very same Serena Williams, "Forget it, dear, and go home. That's Serena Williams you're going to play!"; but, lo·&·behold!, she went on to win. It was Maria Sharapova. Oh, indeed, as Shaw's waiter reminds us, You Never Can Tell. ≈M≈ |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: GUEST,Sans McVitie digestive Date: 03 Jul 15 - 03:51 AM I much prefer watching the women's' matches. Especially with the volume turned up. Regarding the men, if you put money on a British winner, you can always lay your bet off by seeing the odds for a Scottish loser. Purely by checking the odds at Ladbrokes for him winning the final verses Paddy Power odds for him crashing out in the semis, if I were to get bets in before either company altered odds, you were guaranteed a 6% return. (As of ten mins ago.) Unless he lost in the final of course, and then you remain skint. Or bombed out before the semis. Tough thing this betting lark. We should inform the Greek government as I may have found a solution for them if they like suspense. Or can afford to place the bet in the first place. Hang on, Ladbrokes have pushed down the odds as I type. Ah well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Will Fly Date: 03 Jul 15 - 01:38 PM Just kibbitzing the Williams/Watson match - Ms. Watson is doing well - 1 set each and two games up in the 3rd set... |

Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: The Sandman Date: 03 Jul 15 - 02:47 PM oh well i had a covering bet at 5 to 4 on williams, shame though |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Tattie Bogle Date: 03 Jul 15 - 07:55 PM Close finish! Good show - next year, Heather? Of course, anyone who loses, whether Scottish or not, always "crashes out" - there's no such thing as just losing a game! |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Bonzo3legs Date: 04 Jul 15 - 06:04 AM Having to play at Wimbledon against a woman built like a wrestler must be very intimidating! |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Jul 15 - 06:20 AM I don't know who you are referring to Bonzo but it is a very insulting statement! Why would a woman's looks have anything to do with her sporting prowess? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: bubblyrat Date: 04 Jul 15 - 08:11 AM I would have thought that since one of them is much taller and almost twice the size of the other, and with VASTLY more experience, there ought to be a handicap system in tennis ; otherwise, it is aALWAYS going to be unfair , isn't it ? I mean, you wouldn't (and couldn't) have a heavyweight boxer fighting a flyweight, would you ??? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Will Fly Date: 04 Jul 15 - 08:30 AM Size counts for very little in tennis - strength and fitness a lot more. What also matters is agility, anticipation, and the ability to place the ball where you want it - contrary to the anticipation of your opponent. As for experience - well, everyone gets that if they play long and hard enough at that level. As far as the Williams/Watson match went, it came down to the line and could, at one point, have easily gone the other way. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 04 Jul 15 - 10:06 AM Heighth can be an advantage in tennis up to a point. The top male players in the world now average 6'1". |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Jul 15 - 02:17 PM "The top male players in the world now average 6'1"." Is that not to do with the average male height now being nearly 6'? Anyway, what has it to do with someone referring to a female tennis player as looking like a wrestler? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Bonzo3legs Date: 04 Jul 15 - 05:16 PM In any case tennis has the most ludicrous scoring system, all for the sake of wacking a little ball over a net - sometimes against a player built like a wrestler!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 05 Jul 15 - 08:17 AM Dave, the average male in the U.K and U.S.A. is 5'10", 3" shorter than the average for the top male players. If you research it you'll find that the top female players are also taller than the average female. I'm a long time player in USTA leagues and experience has shown me the truth in the old saw "A good big man beats a good little man", true in tennis but maybe not so much in some other sports. I only brought up height because Will Fly wrote "Size counts for very little in tennis" and I wasn't sure if he included height in his assessment so I thought I'd chime in. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: Dave the Gnome Date: 05 Jul 15 - 08:21 AM Cool. Didn't know that. The tennis circuit is a lot more than UK and USA though. Any idea what the average height of players from those areas is? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 05 Jul 15 - 08:26 AM I don't offhand Dave but the info is out there for enterprising googlers. |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: MGM·Lion Date: 11 Jul 15 - 11:45 AM Great ladies' final -- one of best matches I ever remember: really could have gone either way after Muguruza's remarkable comeback when it looked as if the 2nd set had gone right away from her. But congratulations to Serena Williams, who IMO has claims to being the greatest player ever. ≈M≈ They kept talking about the "Serena Slam", BTW -- a phrase I had never heard until 2 or 3 days ago, since when they have gone on about it incessantly. Anyone any idea what the bloody-blue-blazes it actually MEANS? |
Subject: RE: BS: Wimbledon 2015 From: MGM·Lion Date: 11 Jul 15 - 02:07 PM Ah -- found it online 'the "Serena Slam" -- winning four straight majors -- for the second time in her career' |
