Subject: RE: BS: Tech Good backup prog ?? From: Bill D Date: 23 Oct 15 - 06:13 PM My solution for 10 years has been Cobian Backup There are others here... http://www.techradar.com/us/news/software/applications/best-free-backup-software-11-programs-we-recommend-1137924 |

Subject: RE: BS: Tech Good backup prog ?? From: Bill D Date: 24 Oct 15 - 12:26 PM It's like putting your money in a bank..... the odds are pretty good they'll take care of it. NOT backing up files is flirting with worse problems than the rare CRC error. |

I used it until I upgraded to Windows 10. (Backup has changed in Windows 10 but you can restore a Windows 7 backup in Windows 10.) |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech Good backup prog ?? From: MikeL2 Date: 25 Oct 15 - 06:50 AM Hi Dave When I try to back up, prog runs for some time then tells me to put disc in. But regardless of which kind of external disc I put in it just keeps on sending same message. I have tried it on all kinds of media but.....no go. I have tested my disc drive and this works ok for other programs. Cheers MikeL2 |

That's exactly what I do with my picture, videos and music files. I windows explorer and drag and drop to the media....no problems there. Cheers Mike |

I've never used an external USB drive. I backup to a shared drive on another computer across my local home network. Last time I looked Cobian wasn't being maintained. I see it's been sold by the developer. |
Subject: RE: BS: Tech Good backup prog ?? From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 25 Oct 15 - 10:33 AM I have a tried, tested, but boring chore of a manual back up system. Any important stuff gets put in a folder which I then convert to a big Rar file. I then test the Rar in Winrar for errors Then I copy to a USB drive and test the copied Rar in Winrar. If all is ok, I then delete the original Rar on the PC. I do this because I have occasionally copied Rars to external discs which when checked in properties, show copy and original to have the same bit size; but the copy when tested in Winrar shows CRC errors and needs to be deleted and copied again until testing error free in Winrar. I've most recently had this problem with brand new Toshiba 1Tb USB drives.. Unfortunately I got out the habit of backing up for a few months, and lost 6 months of data when the PC'c Harddrive suddenly died just as I was preparing to back up again... |
