Subject: Tune Req: Old Time Music notation From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 05 Nov 15 - 07:39 PM Does anyone know of a comprehensive book (or website) of standard notation for American old time music similar to O'Neill's for Irish tunes? I'm playing banjo tunes with a hammered dulcimer player and he likes the dots. Thanks. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Old Time Music notation From: Joe Offer Date: 06 Nov 15 - 01:03 AM Mudcatter Richie (Richard Matteson, Jr.,) compiled a book titled Bluegrass Picker's Tune Book, published by Mel Bay in 2006. I thought he had a more recent book, but I couldn't find it. The title says "Bluegrass," but most of the songs also fit into the Old Time genre. It has basic melody notation, chords, and lyrics. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Old Time Music notation From: GUEST,gillymor Date: 06 Nov 15 - 07:01 AM The Milliner-Koken book is just what I had in mind, now if I can just get him to spring for the $90. I mostly learn by ear but it looks like it would be a great reference source. Thanks, BanjoRay and thanks all. I did find a nice selection at abbamoses.com and there's a 2 vol. selection called "Old Time Tunes For Fiddle and Mandolin" which is available as shareware. |
