I suppose Ron will be remembered only for one song, Sonny's Dream. I think of it as a song that perfectly describes a dysfunctional mother-son relationship. That's a situation that happens all too often, and it's good that there's a song that tells that story.

May he rest in peace.

Sonny's Dream was fittingly recorded by other artists. Only other song I have heard from him was "The Mother Who Bore You in Pain".

Sad news about Ron. I was told a few weeks ago he was very ill.
I always loved his song "Picture To Hollywood" about a girl from New Brunswick.
He was more than "Sonny's Dream" (a good song in it's own right).

I was lucky to have seen him a few years ago in St. John's playing a small pub when the town was hosting the Juno awards. It made my weekend. RIP and thank you for all your songs.

My favourite Ron song is "The Saint John's Waltz", but I'd never heard "Dry" before Gnu posted it and it's a very moving song.

Sorry to be pedantic, PHJim, but it's The St John's Waltz.
Saint John is in New Brunswick. St John's is in Newfoundland.
Thanks for the pointer. Just listened to Ron singing it on YouTube. Nice song.

You know, I've had Sonny's Dream in my repertoire for about forty years now; learned it off a Wonderful Grand Band album, years before it became a 'standard' .... Never met or saw the man, but was always grateful for that song ..... Condolences to friends and family.

Oddly enough, I have been told that, when translated into French (as Canadians often do) , names St. John's and Saint John look identical?

But, I stand to be corrected by a translator, or language sleuth.

Just where did anyone post that Jeri?

The place names in question are Saint John,NB, and St. John's, Nfld.

St John could indeed exist somewhere else?
But, not in these two exact locations.

Guest DMT, I always thought that "St." was just a short form for "Saint", since it's said, "Saint John's". I know I didn't forget the "apostrophe s". I have been to St. John's many times. I have a grand daughter who was born and lives there. I would never confuse it with St. John.

From the Huffington Post:
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Acclaimed singer-songwriter Ron Hynes, Newfoundland and Labrador's "man of a thousand songs," died Thursday after a brief battle with cancer.

His family says he died shortly after 6 p.m. while receiving treatment at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's. He was 64 years old.

Hynes long referred to himself as the "man of a thousand songs," a moniker he coined in an endearing folk song that speaks of the lonely, shabby side of being a singer.

But he is perhaps best known for his song "Sonny's Dream,'' a lament about a mother losing her son to the sea. The song, written in 1976, has been covered by other artists so many times that it has become a late-night anthem in many corners of the globe.

In St. John's, many friends and fans took to social media to recount stories of the sometimes gruff and mischievous performer, some of them saying it was fitting that the city was plunged into darkness by a power failure as news broke about his death.

"The lights went out downtown," tweeted comedian Mark Critch, a fellow Newfoundlander. "St. John's is dark tonight and so it should be."

Singer-songwriter Alan Doyle described Hynes online as his "musical hero'' and "The greatest songwriter I ever met.'' Comedian Rick Mercer, another Newfoundlander, described Hynes as the "poet laureate of Newfoundland and Labrador."

Newfoundland filmmaker Mary Sexton recalled how her camera developed a problem when she was filming a documentary about Hynes as he toured through Ireland, where ``Sonny's Dream'' is widely thought to be an Irish classic.

"I brought the footage home, sent the film to the lab and found out we had a camera leak and all of the band and Ron had halo's around them,'' she said in an email. "I do believe in fairies ever since ... Mostly I remember his talent, his songwriting and he always had a smile and a hug for me."

In a 2007 interview, Hynes said an addiction to drugs had almost killed him four years earlier.

''Once you're addicted, you're addicted for life,'' he said at the time. ''It's not like you have a cold for a weekend and then Monday morning you're feeling a whole lot better and all those germs are gone.''

Hynes often confronted his demons in song. Even in "Man of a Thousand Songs,'' the jagged, dark side of his life comes out in the lyrics.

"He got a friend in the backstage ally, got just the thing to make the night move along,'' Hynes would sing, a well-worn fedora always part of the act.

Hynes is also famous in his home province for a moving tribute he wrote for the 84 men killed in 1982 when the offshore drill rig Ocean Ranger capsized in a violent storm off Newfoundland.

The haunting lyrics of "Atlantic Blue'' capture a profound sense of loss that endures in Newfoundland to this day: "What colour is a heartache from a love lost at sea? What shade of memory never fades but lingers to eternity? And how dark is the light of day that sleepless eyes of mine survey? Is that you, Atlantic Blue? My heart is as cold as you."

Born in St. John's and raised in Ferryland, Hynes was founding member of The Wonderful Grand Band and later released seven solo albums. He won several East Coast Music Awards and was a Juno and Canadian Country Music Awards nominee.

Hynes was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2012, but he kept the disease at bay until this fall when he confirmed it had returned, this time to his hip and lung. He was rushed to hospital earlier this week.

I have heard that many folks and fans of Ron were under the illusion that he had his addiction under control, but his family and close friends were aware that his addiction controlled him to the end. Here's a note from his nephew:

from Joel Thomas Hynes
A note to say thank you for all the messages and emails and phone calls and handshakes and hugs and tears and laughs and stories. It's been rough, hard to know where to put all this. Personally, I've never experienced such bottomless grief and my heart goes out to all his many loved ones - family, friends and admirers of his music and enigmatic character.
Ron was a fiercely ambitious, prolific artist, a wondrous man with a brilliant gift, no contest. But while his passing is still fresh in everyone's hearts and minds, I'm feeling a sense of duty to offer up a hard truth that's being downplayed or overlooked in all this - the reality of what his battle has been these past years. Yes he died of cancer, but cancer was a seemingly inevitable symptom of the much darker, much more aggressive, hungrier "disease" of addiction. Ron died with next to nothing left, emotionally estranged from those who tried their best to reach him, materially destitute, spiritually adrift, physically shattered. It was beyond shocking how much he resembled his father on his deathbed. Except my grandfather was 92 years old, and for all that, grandfather had a bit more light in his eyes.
Ron had no property to call his own, had sold all his priceless, historic guitars for a pittance to feed his demons and line the pockets of drug dealers. There was a time, when he moved to Ferryland after my grandmother died, when those of us close to him thought, wow, he just might make it. He just might let himself grow old with his guitar out on the deck with a cup of tea, watching the grass grow and counting his blessings. But that obviously wasn't to be the case. Despite what you may have heard, or thought, or hoped, he remained a hardcore addict right to his final days. And it killed him. That's what killed him. He passed the point where he was strong enough to save himself. And he was surrounded by so much love, so much worry and heartache and concern, so many loyal hearts who were desperate to offer him help that he just couldn't or wouldn't accept. And in the end he chose drugs over everything and everyone he ever loved. And he let himself die. And that's the hard truth. Being a lifelong addict myself, educated and in recovery now these past number of years, I find that so frustrating and infuriating and near impossible to swallow. So much rage here, so much confusion, remorse, guilt, just bottomless heartache for what we've lost and why. I can't imagine what everyone else is going through. Really, where does one put all this? What good can come of it?
Ten years ago Newfoundland was suddenly a "have" province. Oil money, people coming home in droves to work. And with all that money came more drugs than our little island could possibly cope with. And after all that nothing has been done - we're in a recession now for another ten years - HMP is busting at the seams, a crumbling cesspool of violence and drugs blocked full of Newfoundland boys from little towns on the Southern Shore, Placentia Bay, Trinity Bay, St. Mary's Bay, who are not gifted like Ron, who don't have the adulation of thousands of people, boys with nothing and no one in their lives to offer them the help they need. And 99 percent of them are locked up because of drugs and alcohol and mental illness. It takes an average of three months for an addict to get just an assessment for counselling.
A few years back Ireland declared binge drinking and drug abuse to be a national emergency and I can't help but believe the same applies for our beautiful little island too. Newfoundland and Labrador needs help. We are crying out for real leadership. We are fucking DYING for proper facilities to treat our addictions and our mental illnesses. The whole province is privy to what drugs and addiction did to one of its most cherished sons. A brilliant musician who could have had the world in the palm of his hands, but instead choose to hide in the back alleys and bathroom stalls of grungy bars, who sold his life's blood chasing a darkness that deceived him right to his final breath.
I don't know what can be done from here on, what demands can be made, but surely someone out there possesses the heart and the charisma and the tenacity and the selflessness to exact some change where it's needed most. You know someone right now who is suffering like Ron suffered. Don't let another day pass. Educate yourself. Stand up. Demand a better outcome. I'm going to miss Ron every day for the rest of my life. I hope it gets easier with time and I hope it gets easier for all of you. But most of all I hope there's a lesson, and some positive, lasting change that can come of his tragic, senseless, untimely passing. Wishing you all peace and resilience and good health on all your journeys, and as Ron would say - safe home. Xxx jth

jth, thank you for your heart's cry. My little town has suffered six deaths this year alone from heroin overdoses. I don't have answers but, like you, I know that something must be done, that there must be answers out there somewhere.

Congratulations on your own upward road. The road can't be easy but congratulations on traveling it.

I rather doubt that 'jth' (Ron Hynes' nephew) reads Mudcat. Thanks for posting it, Jim. I read it on Facebook. The truth may help somebody else. The addict isn't the only one who suffers, and while I'm aware addiction is a disease, I think refusing to fight it at all is a choice. No matter though, guilt doesn't ever help.
