We were married by Bill Murray.
Not the comedian darn it, but the eldest Pastor son of Madalyn Murray the atheist.

He went on to rebel further and ended up with an office inside the Bush White House as a faith coordinator for the religious right.

A friend who was briefly a minister, though he hadn't actually preached for some time. Apparently certificates of ordination, unlike drivers' licenses, don't have to be renewed every few years.

Father Gerald Burke, a very down-to-earth East End priest and a fine man who insisted, in our meetings with him in the weeks before the wedding, that we fearlessly explored all our potential incompatibilities. That was a very good idea.

We married each other. It was blessed, officiated over, what ever you want to call it, by a priest who was a friend and mentor to both of us.

The local Registrar - a woman - at the registry office just around the corner from our house.
We wanted to get away with spending the least amount of money possible on a wedding.
So just the essential fees for the officials and certificate.

Full cost for the event, If I remember right, about a 150 quid.
.. and the cost of a skinfull of pints and a pub lunch..

We only needed to invite a couple of witnesses - both of our mums, but all the women in my family turned up for the afternoon.

Wedding night was the mrs sharing the bed upstairs with her mum

While my mum had the sofa in the front room; I slept on the floor by the fire place.

Since then, neither of us have a clue what happened to the wedding license....

I fully intend a similar cheapest option for funerals......

Cut all the profiteering parasites out of the equation...

I had wanted to be married by a justice of the peace, nothing religious, but the other party talked me into using an old friend of theirs, who was a priest for a made-up dodge-the-draft 60's church. I regretted it, but hey.

On my second marriage we were married in Registry Office.
I married Una Stubbs there!!!

Well for 20 minutes I did.

My wife's name is UNA and the Registrar when producing the documentation had put Una Stubbs by mistake.

Ah Well ....nearly famous....lol

I should point out that we wrote our own vows, selected our own religious readings, and selected our own music. Pete Seegers' "Turn, Turn, Turn" was quite prominent during the service; "Water Music" was the processional and the recessional was "Royal Fireworks Suite" (although nobody except my wife and I recognized it).

My mother-in-law was certain we were going to be married skydiving nude or something, but we REALLY fixed her.

Gee, that was all better than 42 years ago....

A registrar on behalf of marriage legislation. No idea while she was. Only met her just before the bride arrived.

More importantly, in a hotel. Not so far for guests to stumble to the reception in the next room.

My first marriage was in a church. Not sure what sub cult but down the road from where she lived. Her parents booked it. I assume Church of England but as neither of us were superstitious, I didn't take much notice. I know he was a trainee, not the bloke whose name was on the sign.

Either way, both weddings were great, our guests wonderful and we made it a good day ourselves. In our case, the person doing the ceremony did a good job but frankly, didn't see their bit as being important. Our lives together were the important bit.

The County Court at Law Judge because the JP was quite busy that day. I was a reporter at the local paper so when we walked into his office he expected questions - the only one was "will you marry us?" That was enough to get his feet down off of his desk in a hurry!

Acme, it sounds like you knew the judge, right? I think that's a good thing if it can happen - that the person officiating is somebody you know.

On the other hand, my brother got married in Harrah's Casino at Lake Tahoe. And I have to say that the contract minister who presided did a very good job. She made it feel very personal. And the marriage has lasted over twenty years.

Marriage 1. Local church. Presumably the vicar there.

Marriage 2. The council registrar. A hotel near Retford.

Both weddings were our special day, but the ceremony bit, as pivotal as it was, just became a part of the overall occasion. Only we knew about us, only we had embarked on our journey with only our expectations.

I see why the thread exists and I like the idea of people seeing the officiator's involvement as something to treasure. For us, the slightly autopilot words of a stranger who has to look at a sheet of paper when saying your names isn't something we made a note of.

Catholic priest at St Mary's, Swinton, Manchester, nearly 43 years ago. Can't remember his name off hand but I think it may have been O'Meara. I also think he went on to do something at the Vatican but I may have imagined that. I would not change a thing :-)

A registrar for the legal side of things, on the porch of a historic building where we were spending the whole weekend. Readings (non-religious) by my Mum and by a friend. Music played by a scratch band led by Mike O'Connor, playing some of his beautiful Cornish tunes. Then later a hand-fasting ceremony, written by ourselves, performed by two very good friends and followed by a lot of joyful leaping around, a pot-luck barbecue feast and a mellow ceilidh. At the end of the two ceremonies we felt exceedingly married, and have stayed that way.

We were married in 1980 by an incredibly bigoted Irish priest.

Throughout the survive he kept saying God bless Suzanne and ignored me totally

I married my first wife Valerie in London, at Hampstead Register Office, in 1959. We had a follow-up confirmation of vows service performed by a clerical friend of my mother-in-law at her parish church in Gloucestershire when I had a bit of a middle-aged attempt at faith in my 40s [can't quite recall why now -- seemed a good idea at the time but have long since reverted to my default atheism]. My present wife Emma and I were married 5 years ago, 3 years after Valerie's death, at Ely Register Office, and still live happily together here in our Cambridgeshire village.

Coming up to 45 years ago in my wife's home town local Anglican church by the vicar who was also a family friend. I was still attending occasional Quaker meetings at the time, still try to live up to their standards but haven't attended for years. My wife in retirement trained as a Lay Minister and our diary is full of her church commitments. I am a regular attender at her church (regular, not frequent- I go to the annual carol service as nod to my Methodist childhood).

Married in the Catholic church I attended through childhood, by a sweet very young priest, who had been ordained that year.

Was astonished to find that 20-some years later, he'd been the martinet pastor of a large church, and no one missed him much when he was put on administrative leave during our priest sexual abuse investigation.
The marriage worked, tho.
