I thought this was going to be one of those threads that would get closed down swiftly! Never heard of the film, the title doesn't inspire me yet.

Westerns - my most favourite genre of movies...

Watched the first 5 minutes on a dodgy internet site... impressive.

waiting patiently for the Blu-ray...

Don't care if it's going to be self indulgently too long...
just must enjoy it on it's own terms...

Unnecessarily long and, IMO, not a very good at all.
The overuse of the "N" word was pathetic.
A poor cousin to his last western movie, Django Unchained- which I enjoyed.

Easily in the top worst movies I've ever seen. Unnecessarily violent, vulgar, sexual, and just plain nasty. I saw Django and mostly enjoyed it, but this was over the top. Would not recommend. It starts off OK but goes downhill pretty slowly until it reaches the jumping-off point.

Have not seen it yet, I wish they would bring back more of the spaghetti westerns like good bad ugly. Those were great

I think it attempts to create the general post-US civil war period very well - it was what it was, and there is no escaping that. I'm sure that Quentin Tarantino weighed up the potential backlash from the PC brigade and then simply put it to one side.

As for the negative critics; what are your favorite movies?

For the positive reviewers; What are your favorites?

A UK movie I liked is called Frequencies and has a lot to do with music. ( in the UK the movie is called OVX.

I'm all in favour of a good thread devoted to recently [ie 21st Century] released Westerns... as rare as they have become

.. but can I please ask for an emphasis on "no spoilers"...

cheers mates

"Appaloosa" was excellent

on the other hand I've watched the first 5 minutes of the brand new Adam Sandler 'Comedy' western "The Ridiculous 6"...
but I'll probably give in and watch it all one day...

The old 1970's "Edge" series of cheap n nasty novels
has just been granted a variable quality lowish budget pilot by Amazon..
maybe it'll get enough votes to become a full series...???

I think it's a great film.

You won't get the intermission unless you go to one of the special screenings, projected on 70mm (rather than digitally). Despite the fact that I should have known better, I went to one of the "regular" showings and was disappointed by the lack of intermission (plus, about 20 min. were edited out). My own fault.

Tarantino is a bit of a goof, yes, and he does lots of tacky stuff, yes. But there's substance to what he does -- substance that many don't agree with, but substance nonetheless.

The more you are familiar with cinematic history, the more films you've watched -- especially films since the 1960s -- the more you will "appreciate" what he does. Watching his films is like having a good conversation with someone intelligent -- again, even if that person is someone you quite strongly disagree with.

One has to know, for instance, that the Kiwi stuntwoman Zoe Bell, who appears in a sort of cameo, is intentionally "bad." Her character is anachronistic and her tone spoils the tone of the setting. What Tarantino is doing is messing with viewers, putting a stunt person -- whom viewers would have seen as a body double in previous films -- in a speaking role. Many will object on principle to such "clever" gestures, but I think there is a place for such things in some films.

I call his style in this film "talksploitation":
1) Very dialogue heavy; you have to be "into" dialogue to enjoy it, and you have to imagine watching a stage play
2) Even if you're on board with the stage play style, you also have to be willing to sit with lots of "talk" that is there just for the pleasure of talk. It's not necessarily crucial dialogue that serves a tight function, rather it's just there because you like chit chat. Some people can't stand that. I get it. But others love it, just to sit with someone who has the gift of the gab. Tarantino has the gift of the gab, and he very deliberately makes his characters that way, even while knowing it will alienate a large portion of audience. (His film "Death Proof" was an extreme example of this.)

At some point over the last 20 years, I grew out of violence in movies. In 2007, when "Grindhouse" was released with advertising focussed on Quentin Tarantino's segment -- remember the poster with the girl wearing an AK47 for a prosthetic leg? -- I realized that the whole idea just made me tired, like a dirty joke I first heard in Grade 8.

Despite the presence of Samuel L. Jackson in the cast, I shall stay away from "The Hateful 8".

Out of interest, Donuel, I was not really a negative critic. My post was more of an 'in joke' that I am sure the opening poster will understand :-) That out of the way, there are a number of movies that I have really enjoyed from a broad range of subjects and styles. Most recently I enjoyed 'The force awakens' very much. I enjoyed Tarantino's last western, Django Unchained. I am a big fan of most 'Marvel' movies, the latest viewed being Ant Man. Fantasy films such as the Tolkein ones and, oddly enough, I enjoyed the second in both trilogies most. One that I play regularly at home is 'The Power of One' and last night, as a memorial to David Bowie, I re-enjoyed Labyrinth. Many others. Too many to list!

I'm not an uncritical unconditional Tarantino 'fan'.
I'm aware of his indulgences and weaknesses, and pretensions.
But I've yet too see one of his movies I haven't enjoyed more that most other current mainstream 'name' directors.
So despite warnings, I'm still looking forward to this new one.

If I like something, I'm prepared to be more forgiving and tolerant of areas where it might fail to excel or meet higher expectations.

Though I must declare I am a fan of micro budget and no budget exploitation genre movie making,
where enthusiasm and imaginative intentions shine though otherwise badly executed film making.

The kind of films precocious 14 year old film buffs and dull witted adults on IMDB declare to be the worst they have ever seen.

For example, the recent british Western Horror "Blood Moon".

I am also a lifelong enthusiast for extreme exciting 'comic book' on screen violence.

It is an entirely different dimension to all the easily accessible disturbing internet videos of genuine beheadings, throat slittings shootings, brutal beatings, etc
that gore obsessed young boys are in real danger of having their minds polluted by...
