Well, over here, soap operas were big for daytime 'entertainment'...but they've evolved....now it's political pundits spouting about polls that are designed to steer the elections!!
.....but it's still has the 'allure and suspense' of a soap opera!!
Frankly, re-runs of 'Black Adder' are far more entertaining!!

Hi

Yesterday here we had a terrible day for weather. No chance of me and "her indoors" getting outdoors.....so

We watched TV. We watched Bournemouth V Arsenal, then change channel to watch Ireland V Wales in the 6 Nations Rugby Union,

Back to sky to watch Chelsea v Manchester United.

Our sport appetite satisfied we watched Countryfile. Ummmm could smell the fresh air. Then over to watch Vera solve a very delicate and intricate case.

Not fodder to create dinner party conversations perhaps.

We both enjoyed it and it certainly created comments and discussion between us.

Now what's on tonight ??? Weather forecast looks interesting.....lol

Cheers

Mike

Today is the day of the big game in America - the Superbowl, where the two top football teams play for the championship.

And all America is buzzing about the most interesting part - the commercials, especially the Budweiser Clydesdale commercial. One woman told a reporter, "I have my kleenex ready."

It's worth going on YouTube to watch them. Your grandkids will like them, too.

Good imagery, good story, not loud and one minute long. That's my kind of television.

I'm old enough to remember television without music videos. Life without music videos, rather. If the television is on, and those videos turn up, it's time to change the channel. The music videos only work for me if the music stands by itself. And a lot of times, the video seems to be the main deal, and the music is little more than a video soundtrack.

I guess music videos have shifted a lot of units in the music business, though, so the almighty dollar has the last word.

I completely agree with you on the point of politicians and their corporate puppet masters and have always said so. As I said earlier, it is not necessarily the content of what you post but the way it is presented. If you cannot get support for what is a good idea then either it is not a good idea, you are asking the wrong people or you are not putting it across well enough. Ask yourself which it is.

Dave: "It is not so much what you say as how you go about it that rubs people up the wrong way. Reflect on how you talk to people on here and you may have your own profound realisation :-)"

I do. It seems that no matter how or what I've posted, certain people on here, for one reason or another are geared to be confrontational... no matter how much good will and truth you throw out there. I believe that is because there is a predisposed disposition of some sort of political nonsensical toxins they have 'ingested'. When they do listen to the 'news', they don't listen to actually LEARN something, but rather reconfirm some notion that was sold to them, whether that notion is true or not...maybe by a 'friend', or whomever, and instead of incorporating something wider that could be useful to gain a greater perspective.
I could give you an example, but if anyone wants to 'follow up' on it I strongly suggest using another thread, because we don't want or need to divert this thread.
Here is ONE example: One the matter of homosexuality, I, and correctly so, disagreed with it being 'genetic', but DID point out that those who felt they were that way from birth, that it came from the formation of the nervous system, from a woman who had emotional issues with her mate, who impregnated her, and being as they share the same body, while forming, set up the receptors, and synapses to respond differently than those who did not. For that, I was labelled a 'homophobic'...and matter of fact, it was YOU who posted an article, completely supporting my position on that, saying, '..that there were OTHER(than genetic) factors' that cause the homosexual orientation. ...How is THAT homophobic????...........(like I said a forehand, we don't need to debate that here, on this thread..so let's not).

Frankly, I'm tired of political parties (BOTH) using lies and disinformation to get everyone emotionally stirred up, to ram another anti-social agenda, down our throats, while not giving a tinker's damn, whether it's true or not. The same is true with financial issues, taxation, foreign policies, (alleged WMD's as a reason to invade Iraq, with an unfunded war, only to bilk the public with astronomical fees, to service the effort, lying to the public about healthcare, while funneling masses of money to insurance corporations for them to profit, and the list goes on and on, 'alternative fuel sources was another.
Sure, we need a reformed healthcare system, sure, we need alternative fuel sources, but we get lied to and bilked and screwed...but the politicians, in bed with their corporate buddies, don't give a flying fuck. It's not been a history of our political systems representing the will of the people, but rather, FORCING the people to adopt fallacious 'remedies' for things that weren't a problem in the first place...other than solving one bit of corruption, with another bit of corruption!!

When you look objectively at it all, YES, it is time to reflect...reflect on what makes us all susceptible to buying into their horseshit, and really how far that is away, from those moments of PEACE, which can also be found, within us all.

As for me, I have not decided on ANY candidate, nor party to support, so I have no axe to grind about any of them, EXCEPT the ones who are fragrantly LYING through their teeth, and deceiving people, who for the most part, are caring people.

Anyway, post is long enough. We can always turn on our T.V.'s and listen to them lie about everything, till we're all so confused, we don't know who's coming and going.

Meanwhile, we can measure, and define the angst, and compose musical portraits that the inner soul of mankind can can identify with, and benefit from.....and do so, HONESTLY!!

Guest from Sanity has done something of note, to be sure.
This thread was begun by Good Soldier Schweik whose tendency, whether you approve or disapprove, is to sink his teeth in and hang on, AND on, AND on, with terrier tenacity. We have seen him do it in thread upon thread.
Now Good Soldier Schweik has dusted off his hands and walked away from his very own thread, leaving somebody else to play Mudcat Terrier. I doubted that I would ever see the day, but here it is.

Thanks GfS. I do reflect very often, meditate regularly (on the last walk was by a flowing stream with nothing but the sound of running water and birdsong. Lovely) and I very rarely, if ever, watch the news. Especially news of anything political. So, to be honest, you are teaching your grandmother to suck eggs. As we seem to be in agreement may I make a suggestion? It is not so much what you say as how you go about it that rubs people up the wrong way. Reflect on how you talk to people on here and you may have your own profound realisation :-)

OK....Now on your next walk in the woods, stop, sit down and think..and REFLECT.
I guarantee you that in what might be a moment of deeper thought, and introspection, will be more profound to you, than watching the 'news' covering the political campaigns...Compare those two moments.
That's all.

All the best to you, and Regards!!!

.. google the colloquial term 'panty soup'

Steve Martin - He's that old yank banjo player who used to be an intermittently funny comedian...???

"The Jerk" would have been one of his better moments... how long ago was that.....?????

As for being hip.. nah I've never been one for consciously quoting screen comedy highlights...

Had enough of dismal dullards doing that, growing up in the Nation that sired Monty Python and The Young Ones...

How many times can you sit in a pub listening to drunks performing the entire "Parrot" & "Argument" sketches.....😫

Btw... I do realise my limitations as a consistently creative writer.

Which is a self awareness a few of mudcat's more persistently prolific keyboard bashers would be well advised to come to terms with and accept gracefully....

Sorry, you're not as hip as you think you are.....the line was used in the 1979, Steve Martin comedy, 'The Jerk', when Steve says that to the father of the girl he was pursuing.

As usual, TV is a bit behind times.
You're just a little slow, and trying too hard to be politically hip.....but reality has it a different way.

Hi Dave

We had a guy in our club who had no "clacker".

He didn't eat the glass but was very useful in that silly game called The Boat Race was inevitably played at some point during " drinks after the match".

It was ( and still is) a game of two teams all of whom hold a full pint of beer. The aim is to drink the beer a quickly as you can. The next player cannot start until the previous player finishes.

This player we had could down his pint almost as quick as quick as the eye could see. It was like pouring down a drain. When he played we rarely if ever lost.

Those were the days my friend..........."

HI Dave

I read your earlier post and I have the same kind of choices as to when you watch and what you watch on TV.

One exception is that I like Vera. Watched it on Sunday night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I think Brenda Blethyn is a great actress. Especially as I read today because she is now 69 years old she is unable to perform her old party trick. I quote " Brenda Blethyn , 69 said she used to be able to balance a pint of beer on her head and pick up a scarf on the floor without spilling a drop".

Surely any man could like a lady who could do that??

At our rugby club we had a guy who used to stand on his head and drink a pint of beer without spilling it. It had to be one of the old dimpled pots.

In that fine Play Mr Banglestein's Boys it showed a guy biting a pint pot and chewing the piece around in his mouth.

This was written by Colin Welland who played local rugby union and was better known in the 60's TV Police Drama Z Cars.

Cheers

Mike
