my friends were on their way back to Australia - waiting for their plane when the earth moved. They waited fro an announcements, but there was none, so a younger traveller went to ask the airline staff for info. They had none (very stoical NZ-ers!) so the young bloke found a news item on his phone.

My friends were in Christchurch for their niece's wedding, & none of their family were affected.

NZ houses are designed with earthquakes in mind, and in the last one, the bad one before this, all those unfortunates killed were in public/civic buildings, not homes. It depends on WHEN the quake occurs, day or night, how people are in the most danger. However, a good deal of the city is/was built on alluvial soil and the local council have condemned quite a lot of sites where the land turned to a species of bogland.
I don't know of any catters there. I have a couple of folkie friends there whose houses suffered damage in the last quake. Stoic people who love the place.
The insurance companies will take another towelling, as we say. Some people who were not satisfied with their payout from the last quake are STILL living in motorhomes and garages.

It is Monday morning here and I have just returned from taking my visiting brother and his wife to the ferry headed for the South Island. Apparently there were some spectacular landslips along the cliffs near Christchurch and a bit of liquefaction of soils, but not much damage and no significant injuries.

The responsible Government minister Gerry Brownlee has pointed out that since the really big one of 2011, it is predicted by earthquake scientists that there will be a series of aftershocks which may continue for as much as 30 years and yesterdays was but one of these.

Megan? Ah..."my sisterinlaws cousin had flownout to attend her funeral" raises some questions....

As one who lives in an area awaiting "The Big One" (Yellowstone area of the US) I can relate with the kiwis.

The cousin of Megan's sister-in-law had flown out to attend the funeral service for Megan's sister-in-law's. I'm sorry for the loss, Meg.

I'm happy things aren't so bad in lovely New Zealand despite the 'quake.

Maeve
