Subject: I Like Ike all over again From: keberoxu Date: 28 Mar 16 - 02:29 PM Who is muttering about repeating history from 1952? When Eisenhower was first elected President, he didn't want to run. The incumbent, Truman, refused to commit to another term. But the kingmakers wanted someone who could beat Adlai Stevenson. That's a really truncated summary of what happened 64 years ago. Could it happen now? |

Subject: RE: BS: I Like Ike all over again From: Greg F. Date: 28 Mar 16 - 03:44 PM Not only that, but if the U.S. reverted to the tax rates/structure that pertained in Ike's administration, there'd be no federal deficit. With the current crop of Tea Party Reaganomical Republicruds that ain't gonna happen either. To them, Ike would be a flaming communist. Draft Olympia Snow? |
Subject: RE: BS: I Like Ike all over again From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Mar 16 - 03:49 PM I'd go for Snow. How's that for a campaign slogan, Greg? She's a good 'un, she is. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: I Like Ike all over again From: keberoxu Date: 28 Mar 16 - 06:05 PM ....and who is General Mattis, anyhow? |
Subject: RE: BS: I Like Ike all over again From: Joe_F Date: 28 Mar 16 - 08:43 PM My father was originally named Isaac. But nasty kids taunted him in school because he had a Jewish name (this was in New York, about 1900). They called him Ikey. So he changed his name to Isidore, but (that still being too Jewish) then to Irving. In 1952, when Vermont was full of people wearing "I Like Ike" buttons, he was highly amused. |

Subject: RE: BS: I Like Ike all over again From: Joe Offer Date: 28 Mar 16 - 10:34 PM Hmmm. I hadn't heard of General Mattis. This being a folk music forum and all, I thought of the Métis from Gordon Bok's recording of the Bill Gallaher song The Last Battle. I don't trust military people in civilian leadership, but I'd make an exception for Ike and for Colin Powell. But I admit that Mattis sounds interesting. There's an interesting article about Mattis here (click). Here's an excerpt:
Mattis is a student of both history and economics, known for quoting Greek sophists but unafraid to dabble in some occasional profanity—though his famous blunt talk, famously known as Mattisisms, would seem mild in a year laced with Trump's vulgarities. He neuters both party frontrunners' perceived strengths. Trump's faux-tough guy act would crumble when met with an actual warrior, and Hillary Clinton's foreign policy chops would seem like an 100-level International Relations course next to Mattis's experience and expertise… He's a man who has always answered the trumpet's blast of flag and freedom. He knows, as do many voters, the ugly prospect of a Trump presidency and what it would mean for the rule of law, the sacredness of the office, and the integrity of the Constitution. He also knows how tough things have grown oversees, with America's special role in the world slipping away each day. |

Subject: RE: BS: I Like Ike all over again From: keberoxu Date: 03 Apr 16 - 11:43 AM And now there is talk of the 12th Amendment, the House of Representatives, and the presidential election of 1824, also recalled as "The Corrupt Bargain." I'm speechless. |

Subject: RE: BS: I Like Ike all over again From: keberoxu Date: 19 Nov 16 - 12:47 PM No way would I compare Donald Trump to Dwight David Eisenhower. The Adlai Stevenson thing, though, I'm ruminating on that one. Hillary Clinton as Adlai Stevenson, history repeating itself? As for Gen. James Mattis the Marine, his name is now being mentioned as a future Secretary of Defense. Was there not a time, a hundred years ago, when the US called it the Secretary of War? |
Subject: RE: BS: I Like Ike all over again From: Greg F. Date: 19 Nov 16 - 04:37 PM Yup. Just what we need - "Mad Dog" Mattis - a rogue leatherneck as Sec. of War- which is what he will be. War without end, Amen. |
Subject: RE: BS: I Like Ike all over again From: Mr Red Date: 20 Nov 16 - 04:20 AM Heck, I like Barry Goldwater these days! As his slogan said "In your heart, you know he's right" And the rejoinder "In your guts, you know he's nuts" But I liked the one that went "In your heart you know it's Bush" echoed by "In your bush, you know it's Hart" And all we get in the UK is "Labour isn't working" from a gov that subsequently doubled unemployment. And Farrage! Please, please - take him off our hands ................. |
