Subject: BS: 3 Earth like planets From: Donuel Date: 03 May 16 - 03:33 PM http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/02/health/three-habitable-planets-earth-dwarf-star/ These are the kinds of planets that would have slower long term evolution of life and lifetimes. It is also likely the beings would develop enormous sized eyes. Home of the Greys? Just 40 light years way. |
Subject: RE: BS: 3 Earth like planets From: Senoufou Date: 04 May 16 - 09:28 AM I love the phrase 'ultra cool dwarfs' Donuel. I'm imagining a re-write of Snow White and the Seven Ultra Cool Dwarfs' wearing snazzy sunglasses and cool-dude trainers... I expect there are many planets out there with life forms, considering the almost limitless numbers of objects in space. It's a bit sad that contact with them would be almost impossible. |

Subject: RE: BS: 3 Earth like planets From: Senoufou Date: 04 May 16 - 09:41 AM Yes, Les, very true. We've made enough of a pig's knitting amongst eachother here on earth, without getting stuck into another bunch of beings elsewhere. |
Subject: RE: BS: 3 Earth like planets From: Mrrzy Date: 04 May 16 - 11:55 AM Since the planets all are single-side-to-their-sun, the idea is there would be no life on the light nor dark sides, but only in a kind of meridian of permanent twilight; you'd have fear of both dark AND light. Fascinating, Larry Niven, where are you? And what does that do to their weather? Is the atmosphere on a permanent one-way wind? I would think atmosphere would flee the light where the energy is, wouldn't it all end up on the dark side, frozen? There *was* a Larry Niven about that, with Avram Zooman as a character... |
Subject: RE: BS: 3 Earth like planets From: Donuel Date: 04 May 16 - 04:35 PM I did not know they did not spin on their axis. How can we know that? Their sun should be called Sunoufou It makes you think how much Earth is a hot bed for life and how certain epochs evolved with amazing speed. |
Subject: RE: BS: 3 Earth like planets From: Mr Red Date: 05 May 16 - 02:28 PM only two "could be" tidally locked. I was skeptical that they could measure that until I read. Tidal lock is produced by elliptical orbits and mass concentrations (irregularities) , couple with proximity. |
Subject: RE: BS: 3 Earth like planets From: Donuel Date: 05 May 16 - 02:47 PM Today they are 40 light years from Earth but as you know space is expanding at an accelerating rate. So how close was it 70,000 or just 10,000 years ago. To answer this question there will be a telescope launched in 2020 that will be able to the change in space expansion rates over large time scales. I have been harping about the relationship between mass and space and how the accelerating formation of black hole effect this relationship and is respondsible for what we call dark energy. I hoped using some current telescopes in an "off label" way could find historical expansion rates, but the new telescope called Euclid will be the ideal instrument to find out how close those 3 planets used to be and reveal how astronomical distance changed in the near and distant past. Maybe there was a time when space travel did not face the vast distances it does today. Or maybe not. |
