Subject: BS: where was Argleton UK? From: Mr Red Date: 18 May 16 - 04:06 AM Did anyone spot it on Google maps before 2009? Just curious. see Trap Streets & Fake Towns (aka map traps) I was on Bing maps and spotted one in my town plus some wacky places for a few businesses. They know now at least. |

Subject: RE: BS: where was Argleton UK? From: Doug Chadwick Date: 18 May 16 - 05:54 AM Google Maps still show the location Argleton Town in Aughton, West Lancashire, but identifies it as a ghost town. The linked article is headlined; "Map Traps: Intentional Mapping Errors to Combat Plagiarism" but it sounds to me like an excuse to cover up accidental errors by the cartographer. Google maps used to have the wrong locations for several businesses near to my house but they seem to have been corrected now. DC |
Subject: RE: BS: where was Argleton UK? From: Jack Campin Date: 18 May 16 - 07:36 AM Sounds like it has great potential for band names. Argleton Morris, The Argleton County Googlewhackers, Argleton and Agloe Silver Band, or just generically the Argleton Arglers. |
Subject: RE: BS: where was Argleton UK? From: Jon Freeman Date: 18 May 16 - 10:52 AM I guess places can seem to come and go. I lived in the village of Bryn Pydew ,up a hill above Llandudno Junction,N Wales. When they did the new link road to Llandudno from the expressway/A55, it used annoy me that a road sign (late 80s/early 90s?) they put up was to Esgyryn. I'd known Bryn Pydew from the mid 60s and 'sgyryn to me was no more than a road you would drive (or one walking route) to get to the Junction and I'd have thought the houses there were part of Bryn Pydew (although borders are vague - don't ask me say where Pydew stops and Glanwydden starts...) Looking at this OS map though, Esgyyn seems a separate place and Pydew has lost it's "Bryn" (although we'd not use Bryn either in local usage...) here On an earlier map, Pydew doesn't exist at all but Esgyryn is there. |

Subject: RE: BS: where was Argleton UK? From: Mr Red Date: 18 May 16 - 04:06 PM In the 60/70s there was a place on a Bartholomew Road Atlas called "Piddle in the Hole" about the region of Broadwas on Teme not far from Bromyard. Given the villages Wyre Piddle & North Piddle it was believable but it has never been seen on subsequent maps. That must have been a map trap. Wiki says name is also an anagram of "Not Large" Could have been worse they might have used "Wgasa" |
Subject: RE: BS: where was Argleton UK? From: Jack Campin Date: 18 May 16 - 06:16 PM There is a board in the parish church of Youlgrave in Derbyshire which records that some time in the early 18th century someone donated, for church funds, the field called Barearse Pingle. This is unknown to Google Maps. If you search for it, Google finds you a book on English field names, but a lot more links about getting your arse pingled in ways the church might not have approved of. |

The topic has come up on the National Public Radio program A Way With Words. One of the hosts is also a dictionary editor and has discussed it. |
