Oh crumbs! My husband has just gone outside with the kitchen scissors and cut down the large England flag from the front of our house.
I secretly feel quite chuffed for the Vikings; so few resources for their team, such a tiny population and they've got to the quarter finals! (But I'm keeping my mouth shut!)

The English played bravely, and it seemed to me that they had way more possession than the Icelanders and had many near chances, but the Icelanders were just wonderful defenders, and also lucky.

Perhaps the English need to sacrifice some exceptionally beautiful blond youth ;) to the gods they have offended?

Yes along with all nation ....world wide , but we still respect the English , this was not their day , they game on the field and already had won the game ....well never think that way ..

The contrast of the Iceland fans, and the listless English mob was striking. And it was notable that the Iceland lot gave far better coordinated support, especially with that coordinated clap that sounded like a dragon grunting.

the clap , is what we call a Viking Hú ....hú for victory ....

amazing fans ...there were 5000 on the field ...there were 325 thousand in Iceland giving the Viking hú at the same time ....

Well done Iceland, I'll be supporting you (and Wales, having a Welsh mother) for the rest of the tournament. You played like warriors, refused be ground down and showed spirit and skill, you exposed our weaknesses and deserved the victory.

They can also kick straight when they're trying to score. They've only had about ten goal attempts so far, and scored about 5 or 6.

England on the other hand are hopelessly blunt in attack, whilst dodgy in defence (not to mention useless at penalty shoot-outs). It was never obvious how they were going to progress through the knockout stage.

Can anyone explain why England with so many talented players cannot function as a team. Not just in this tournament but it so many over the past 50 years. Blaming the manager cannot be the only solution we've had so many who have not come up with the goods. If it wasn't for the huge salary they receive I might even feel sorry for them.

I,m not interested in football either but I found this amusing. Did I hear on the radio this morning that the Iceland team is run by a part time dentist ? No wonder England supporters look so down in the mouth.   And for some it was a double defeat ....out of Europe twice !

DER SPIEGEL has published the following photo joke on ther morning of the game:
Cameron and Merkel talking to each other, Cameron rather serious looking, Merkel smiling.
They had Cameron say: "This is a low point in the history of England."
And Merkel responing: "And the next comes this evening from 9 pm onwards."

I doubt they would have published that joke if they had believed it could possibly become true.

Now I hope for Iceland to beat France.

It would be good if they could beat France - if only because that might shut up the voices saying this just happened because the English were useless. The truth was more that Iceland were outstanding. And if they could beat France that would have to recognised.
