Subject: Sammy's Bar - which film was it in?
From: GUEST,Sue Taylor

Years ago, I found a snippet of info in a Mudcat thread about this song by Cyril Tawney, and a link to a slightly surreal video/film clip that contained a version of the song. I kept the link, and have often gone back to it and watched it - I found it utterly beautiful and mesmerising.

When I tried to do this today, however, the film is no longer available on Youtube.

Does anyone remember this? or know what the film title was? or even possibly have a new link to it?

thanks

....update....I've found out what film it is - Flipping The Whale - but can find no trace of either the film or the Sammy's Bar clip anywhere. Does anyone have it, or know where I can find it please?

The spot mentioned in the song (Pieta?), is not far from where the mock-up sailing ship used as a set in the film 'Popeye' is docked, on the road from Slima to Valletta, in Malta.
Not the answer to the query, I'm sure, but not a lot of people know that!

The version of the song in the Flipping the Whale video was sung by Joe Hickserson and backed by other Golden Ring members from their Folk Legacy album Five Days Singing. The people who made the video were based in Chicago, from the description that I read. I hadn't checked to see if the video was still out there. It's been a couple years at least, since I've seen it. I liked it, though I can see that it might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Never heard the soundtrack so don't know how well it matches:

I'm sure the Golden Ring version Phil linked to was the one used in the film, because I learned the song from it after seeing the clip.

They got it a bit wrong, though, because they sing "the last boats are leaving", whereas Tawney wrote "the last boat's a-leaving". There are a number of previous threads here including "the meaning of daighsoe".

The movie Flipping the Whale exists all right, and it won an award and some enthusiastic reviews in the process, but it seems remarkably hard to track down,

Here is a page about it

Have to say, I think Lonnie Donegan's version is the best. Not at all similar to his other songs, but imo creates the atmosphere beautifully.
It's on Youtube.

I think I might actually have been the one who posted that link as hardly anyone had heard of the film before then. It was indeed Flipping The Whale that produced that mezmerising version of for me Tawney's most beautiful son. If anyone can tell me if the clip is still on line somewhere or where I might get a copy of the film I'd be very grateful if you'd let me know, Desi on crc778@aol.com

Georgiansilver - that link doesn't work for me either.

Desi - the link was given to me by The Villan on a thread that I started in 2009 about female duet songs. That one doesn't work any more either. I found that clip mesmerising too, and would really like to find it again. Why would it have been withdrawn though?

Performed the song tonight, with five-part harmony. It feels so good!

Back around the time I first discovered the clip from "Flipping the Whale", I actually managed to contact the filmmaker. He said he'd send me a DVD of the movie, but he never did. It looks intriguing, to say the least, from the "Sammy's Bar" clip.

DeciC, Michaelr said "I'm sure the Golden Ring version Phil linked to was the one used in the film".
Are you not able to get it on the Spotify link above?

Thanks for the Spotify links, Freddy.

However, going back to my original request on this post, it's really the film clip I'd like to find.

Seems it's impossible to find that clip any more.

So just to be clear, the YouTube link I posted was the same version of the song but from the later CD and not the original score/soundtrack (still looking around for the movie/clip.)

It is still available on YT, albeit not in the UK. (fyi: Y'all have been made subjects of The Orchard Enterprises' B.A.C.O.N. botnet. Don't take it too personal.)

There is a musical group in Chicago called Candytown. I think the leader of the group was the director/writer of Flipping the Whale

There is a clip from the film on YouTube at the moment, though a comment ~Dec2016 says they think the music played is different from what they heard previously.

What I hear on the clip above is
Joe Hickerson, Lynn Hickerson, Ginny Dildine, Ed Trickett, New Golden Ring

I bet someone on this site could locate a copy of Flipping the Whale for you.
