Subject: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Will Fly Date: 23 Aug 16 - 04:04 AM So I'm glad to have got to 72 in reasonable health with a moderately comfortable lifestyle and a great son, partner and grandkids. So far so good! We've just come back from a wonderful holiday in Brittany - decided, as it's our 50th wedding anniversary, to treat the whole family to a week in a converted 15th century manor house. We had a great time. And if all of that sounds rather commonplace and smug, well... there's often not a lot to talk about between the usual milestones of 60, 65, 60, etc., so as I get older, I enjoy every year as much as I can. The kids are still in France, and we're taking my wife's mother (she's 90) with us to Brasserie Blanc in Chichester for lunch. The sun is shining, and it's warm already (9am UK summer time). It can all go to hell in a handcart at any moment these days, so enjoy what you can while you can! |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Senoufou Date: 23 Aug 16 - 04:46 AM Many Happy Returns, Will, and Congratulations on your Golden Wedding Anniversary! I'm 'elderly' too, and like you I truly relish each day. So many dear friends have 'gone before' so to speak, and I'm determined to have as much fun and joy as possible. Watching the News on TV I can see that many poor souls have terrible lives these days and disasters can happen at any time, so I have the same mindset as yourself - enjoy while we can eh? |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Joe Offer Date: 23 Aug 16 - 04:51 AM 72 used to sound really old. Now, it's only 4 years older than I am. Guess I won't mind 72 when I hit it. Here's hoping for many more good years, Will. -Joe- |

Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Rapparee Date: 23 Aug 16 - 11:49 AM Geez, you must remember when library catalog cards were chiseled by hand onto pieces of rock! Thank goodness I'm not THAT old -- I remember typing the damned things. We didn't file them, of course, because if you can't find the book librarians become indispensable. May your flame of knowledge never go out or even be reset to "low." |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Will Fly Date: 23 Aug 16 - 12:24 PM Thanks for the kind thoughts folks. Rap, I remember hours filing catalogue cards - but the only ones I actually typed were in Cyrillic - because I was responsible for cataloguing books in Russian! My first professional job out of library school - aged 22. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Micca Date: 23 Aug 16 - 02:50 PM Many Congratulations on your various Anniversaries, Will, I hope there will be more musical arrangements inspired by France? I knew you were slightly older than me but not that it was a scanty year and a few weeks!! Stay well friend, Play Music, that seems to work for you! Micca |

Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 23 Aug 16 - 05:31 PM A fair age, but not what counts as old, as you'll appreciate in a few years. Happy Birthday anyway. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: frogprince Date: 23 Aug 16 - 06:05 PM Oh, to be a kid like you again... Maybe, by the time I reach your age, I can learn to play geetar... That gives me two n' a half years.... (Congrats, on the B'day and the good times) |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: frogprince Date: 23 Aug 16 - 06:09 PM Now, let me try that again when I'm awake; I meant to say that maybe if I was your age, I could have learned to play by my present age. |

Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Fossil Date: 23 Aug 16 - 08:20 PM Well done, Will and Happy Birthday! Personally, I have been 72 for 6 months already and still feel pretty much the same as I always did (about 16!). But glad you have family and friends around you - mine are scattered around the world and I have to travel to see them, but it is always sweet when I do. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: ChanteyLass Date: 23 Aug 16 - 08:46 PM I'll be 72 some day, too! At least I hope I will. Congratulations on reaching that age! I will, however, never celebrate a golden anniversary. Even if I got married tomorrow, I couldn't live that long. Maybe I can find another reason to take a trip like you did with your family! Best wishes for many more happy celebrations with your bride! |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: CupOfTea Date: 23 Aug 16 - 10:33 PM So? So splendid congrats on achieving that age with an intact mind, family and finances; well done, you! Hope you enjoyed all the tasty regional foods my friends raved about after a week in Brittany with a local family of pen pals. Ciders, and wondrous "can't export them" cheeses... Sigh. Hope you also got to see the light shows projected on the cathedrals oh la la, gorgeous. Iffen ya didn't, there' s next year, we hope! Keep on reveling in a good life. Joanne in Cleveland |

Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Rusty Dobro Date: 24 Aug 16 - 01:33 PM But that means you must date back to the first half of last century! Oh rats, so do I...... |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Donuel Date: 24 Aug 16 - 01:39 PM Holy shit did you just jinx it or what! Well at least you are now in a new demographic. You are now NOT; in an STD population, likely to commit bigamy, switch parties, switch religious affiliation or be abducted by aliens. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Will Fly Date: 24 Aug 16 - 03:20 PM We-e-ll... I met some aliens once, but ten minutes of my tenor banjo playing saw them off in no time. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Donuel Date: 24 Aug 16 - 03:24 PM Ten minutes is long time. My ukulele works in 90 seconds. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Rapparee Date: 24 Aug 16 - 09:19 PM HEY!! Watch what you're saying about folks born in the last half of the last century! He's only six months older than I am, and I'm not all crippled and decrepit by age! I gotta stand up for old folks like him! In fact, I was gonna put a song about standing up for old folks here, but I couldn't find it so listen to this one instead. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Andrez Date: 24 Aug 16 - 09:27 PM Ten minutes? 90 seconds? One look at a Morris dancer in full kit and aliens disappear in milliseconds :-) Cheers, Andrez |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: leeneia Date: 25 Aug 16 - 12:36 AM I like 72. It's divisible by 1,2,3,4,6,8,9,12,18,24 and 36. Just think of the patterns, fractals and rhythms you can make with a number like that. So happy birthday. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Senoufou Date: 25 Aug 16 - 05:16 AM In our small village there are SIX folk over ninety years old, and they appear to zoom about like spring chickens. One is 97, lives on his own and still drives perfectly safely. I don't think being in one's seventies is 'old' nowadays (trying to ignore my wrinkles and white hair, not to mention saggy bits and loose teeth!) |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: bubblyrat Date: 25 Aug 16 - 05:35 AM Good for you, cousin Mike ; of course,I am MUCH younger than you (69 in October) ,but Nicola was 72 in June, so I know what it is like !Of course, to look at you one would think you were MUCH younger, and you can still play the guitar a bit,so well done and MHR ,tovarich. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Donuel Date: 25 Aug 16 - 11:02 AM leenia sounds like you might have some unexplored talents. Perhaps you like to build fractals on your computer with some 3D programs. Think up some numbers, swish them around and poof you got fractals. I experimented to the point where I found the fractals for organic life forms like the elephant. It is a very unusual unlikely animal evolving a helping hand out of its nose. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: MikeL2 Date: 25 Aug 16 - 02:29 PM Hi Will happy (late) Birthday. Of course 72 is not old these days; You are just a whippersnapper. I am approaching 81 soon and d despite a couple of battle with the dreade Big C am still able to do most things - albeit either more slowly or not as well as before. I struggle playing guitar these days so I pulled out my old keyboard. Must sound really good cos the neighbours keep throwing stones through the windows so that they can hear me better. I admire your playing and hope that you can go on for many years to come. Cheers Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Will Fly Date: 25 Aug 16 - 03:16 PM Thanks to all, once again, for all the kind thoughts and good wishes. It's really appreciated. And I hope to play for many years to come as well! |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: The Sandman Date: 25 Aug 16 - 05:26 PM i hope so too |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 26 Aug 16 - 06:03 AM We're the same age for a couple of months yet. I was discussing with some friends of a certain age earlier this week:when does middle age become old age? We decided "old people" were always those 10 years older than yourself! RtS 72 and 10 months. |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Senoufou Date: 26 Aug 16 - 06:06 AM Oh, 90 is the new 70! So that would put middle age at about...er...well, the age one stops chasing nookie and prefers to indulge in a nice pint, a pie and a chat round the a pub! |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: Will Fly Date: 26 Aug 16 - 06:27 AM Actually, I indulge in a nice pint, a pie, a chat round the pub - and then chase the nookie. As the "nookie" is just a year younger than me, I invariably catch her... and bugger the indigestion! |
Subject: RE: BS: Today I am 72 - so? From: leeneia Date: 26 Aug 16 - 03:52 PM Hi, Donuel. I will look for a fractal program. Thanks for the chuckles, fellas. |
