Subject: RE: BS: New York Times about widget commercials From: keberoxu Date: 01 Nov 16 - 06:24 PM In the interest of full disclosure, I ought to admit that I have clicked onto those sleazy links too many times. Maybe from now on, I would be better off disregarding them. |
Subject: RE: BS: New York Times about widget commercials From: Senoufou Date: 02 Nov 16 - 04:26 AM I had no idea they're called 'widgets'! But some of them are tempting. I've clicked on widgets from time to time as the photos look interesting. (Strange animals or unusual weather events, health tips and scientific discoveries for example) But they always reveal themselves to be merely adverts in another guise. As your link says, there can be some unfortunate juxtaposition of topics. (The serious Rape article with a widget relating jokes about rape - appalling) I suppose all websites have to make money somehow, and advertising/selling provides their revenue. |

Subject: RE: BS: New York Times about widget commercials From: Andrez Date: 02 Nov 16 - 07:44 PM For what its worth, there are a number of 'widgets' also known as Ad Blockers that are free and can be installed into your browser that can automatically prevent many of the kind of links described above from appearing on webpages being browsed. You can even block particular elements on a webpage so they never appear at all but you still get the rest of the content. Most have variants to suit IE, Firefox and Safari at least. I use several and have a relatively Ad free browsing environment. Happy to attach links to these if any one would like to read more and perhaps try them out. Cheers, Andrez |
