In Massachusetts, where I voted:

by noon on Wednesday 2 November, the early votes already in were estimated at about 700,000.

I tried to vote early twice and failed to cast a ballot.
The venue was changed and I needed an i phone GPS since no map was available in the voting bulletin.
It was more difficult due to an obscure location and a no sign ordinance within the private neighborhood development.
I could have tried the county Executive building but I was already discouraged

I've been volunteering for the Democratic Party at my local early voting site. Handing out sample ballots to those who are interested. I live in a county that is over-all is a strong Democratic enclave in North Carolina, in a conservative precinct in terms of those who actually vote.

It is an interesting experience.

I mailed in my ballot, specificly because of memories of a 45 minute wait, mostly in the dripping rain, in a previous presidential election year. My patience and arthritic knees are not up to that kind of difficulty any longer. With the choice to mail in a ballot made so extravagantly easy, I offer gratitude. I also don't want to encounter any campaign hassles that going to a polling place represents. As someone who comes with her research done, it annoys me to be accosted, even by folks of my own view, on the way in. How much nicer to be able to do the last bit of research online and mark the choices then and there!

In my Texas county alone

by the time the polls closed — and at least one stayed open until about 9 p.m. — at least 480,960 Tarrant County residents had cast early votes in person and 34,231 mailed ballots had been received, local election records show.

And statewide, more than 4 million voters, or 41.05 percent, cast ballots in the 15 most-populated counties through Thursday, according to the most recent data provided by the Texas secretary of state's office.

If Michigan offered early voting I would have done it. I found I could have easily gotten an absentee ballot to mail in, but the deadline is today. Since our polling place is small, I don't think I'll have a problem getting in and out.

Why do people vote early? Unless there is an actual reason, like having something on that would get n the way of voting on the day?

It seems a bit like opening presents before Christmas or youur birthday. And after all something might happen that makes you change your mind - and in the case of the U S elections, though all the stuff in the papers is about Clinton and Trump, where there's not much room for changing minds, they vote about all kinds of other stuff, sch as numerous other political jobs, or whether to legalise marijuana.

I like voting on Election Day. It's a nice, social event in our small community. I know I'm voting differently from many of the people I see, but there's no partisan conversation at the polling place - only nice conversation.
I voted absentee for the first time in my life because I'm traveling. In other years, my trips weren't so long and I was able to vote early at the Registrar of Voters office. It's nice to have that option.

In California, the idea has always been to make it as easy as possible for people to vote, and there are no conspiracy theories here about election fraud.

I vote early because I can. It counts exactly the same as on election day, but it means I probably don't have to wait in a long line to get into my local polling station, I can go to a larger central location that is open for early voting and get it over with.

In addition to that, the national election is the second Tuesday in November. November weather is notoriously changeable, and there have been years where huge snowstorms, rainstorms, hurricanes, etc. have impacted the ability to get to the polls. So doing it ahead of time means you can vote for sure.

In the UK we don't have early voting with polling stations, but people can apply for postal vote, which they have to send back in advance, so it can be counted at the same time. That used to be reserved for people with a special reason for being unable to vote on the day, such as illness or planned absence, but now anyone can apply.

I see that now about 30 hours before the polling booths are due to open, the FBI announces that all the panic about this fresh batch of emails was a load of tosh - nothing crininal in them (so far as Hillary and co are concerned - might be a different situation for Mr Wiener).

Meanwhile during the scare about them a few millions will have voted without hearing about that development. Oops...

I gather there a lot of people who loathe Trump, but who aren't keen on Clinton. I suspect the Wiener connection might have pushed some of them to opt for a third party candidate.

I can see why parties might like the idea of early voting, but I'm surprised that so many people choose to do it.

I think they've got the right idea in some countries where they have people playing music at polling stations, and treat it as a bit of a fun event. I think that would probably even be illegal in drab countries like ours.

Well, Tester is hanging tough.

Less than a 50/50 chance that the Republicans can oust him at this point.

May happen but not likely now.

That brings the count down to 54 Republicans and 46 Democrats in the Senate.

House is soft with at least 20 pickups for the Dems.

Trouble is they need 23 for a majority. 50/50 chance of that but going up daily.

Many of us will be staying up late tomorrow night (Tuesday NOV 6).

Just watched Michael Moore's Where to Invade Next - interesting film. One of the most interesting things in it, though, was the description of the effect of refusing votes to people who've been in jail. According to this, a whole swathe of Deep South states would be Democrat if black men imprisoned for taking a puff of a spliff were able to vote as they are in other countries.

There was a "Do Not Vote" thread that was closed - the usual parties were winding up for the usual fights.

Let's hope each of them was able to cast their vote the way they wished, with no difficulties. And will set aside the hammers and tongs for a while, because most of us are sick to death of those old fights.

Last night Frontline replayed both parts of the program about Facebook and how the last election was influenced by Russian players. Eliminating the bad players from overseas - that's the good fight we need to be looking at now.

I voted early, on the first day possible.

presented a question to re-enfranchise some, though not all, felons.
