Subject: BS: The Book Thief From: Dave the Gnome Date: 03 Feb 17 - 10:23 AM I am currently reading the novel named in the thread title by Markus Zusak. It is exceptionally good and very innovative in style. I have not finished it yet so no spoilers please but has anyone else read and enjoyed it? I may watch the film later as well. Cheers DtG |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: DMcG Date: 03 Feb 17 - 11:26 AM I read it a few years back and really enjoyed it. There is a book within the book that is incredibly moving, but doesn't really appear in the film. Otherwise, the film is a fairly accurate representation of the book. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Monique Date: 03 Feb 17 - 11:36 AM I read the French translation (La voleuse de livres) -in Fr. the title gives away the thief's gender. I did enjoy it but I haven't watched the film. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: DMcG Date: 03 Feb 17 - 11:59 AM I take your point about the film. The book is quite subtle in which exact words are used where, and it is clear how important this is; it is quite difficult to make that apparent in a film without it appearing laboured. So it is easy for the film to appear as just " a child's experience of the war" which not really the point of the book. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Jim Carroll Date: 03 Feb 17 - 12:17 PM I read the book and found it incredibly moving - I was somewhat disappointed with the film, but I put that down to being unable to dislodge the pictures the book had lodged in my head. "no spoilers please" I love Alaexi Sayle's description of the pleasure he took in walking up and down the length of the queues waiting to see 'The Mousetrap' and telling them, "it was the butler what did it". Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: meself Date: 03 Feb 17 - 12:59 PM Thanks a lot for spoiling The Mousetrap for me! Might as well take that one off my bucket-list! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Jim Carroll Date: 03 Feb 17 - 01:30 PM "Thanks a lot for spoiling The Mousetrap for me! " I didn't say it was true - Sayle is a fellow-Liverpudlian and therefore anything he has to say needs to be taken with a large pinch of salt! Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: ChanteyLass Date: 03 Feb 17 - 08:23 PM I belong to two book clubs, and it was picked by both several months apart. It was hard to start reading because of who the "narrator" is but once I got several pages into it, I was hooked. A few years ago, when my grandson was about 14, I gave him a copy. I hope he read it. I haven't seen the movie. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Mrrzy Date: 03 Feb 17 - 11:27 PM You guys reminded me of a thread-creepful favorite family memory of mine of the greatest spoiler ever... watching something with all my sisters and our mom, and a character threw up and mom said, she's pregnant. And we all, in chorus (see, it's a music story) say, Don't spoil it, we haven't read the book! So mom says Well of course she's pregnant, otherwise how can she die in childbirth? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Murpholly Date: 04 Feb 17 - 05:07 AM Used to live near London but never got to see the Mousetrap but managed to see it in Bradford when it went on tour for the first time. There is no Butler in the Mousetrap so you can still go and see it. Book thief one of best books I've ever read and I found it incredibly emotional. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: DMcG Date: 04 Feb 17 - 05:25 AM Great spoilers of all time: my wife watched The Sixth Sense and was telling our children they should go to see it. "It"s really.clever, he"s dead" she says .. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Dave the Gnome Date: 04 Feb 17 - 06:50 AM Someone spoiled 'Titanic' for me by telling me the ship sank... ;D tG |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Jim Carroll Date: 04 Feb 17 - 07:48 AM Just like I keep watching Shane in the hope that he didn't die in the end "There is no Butler in the Mousetrap" Damn - you've just spoiled the joke Jim Carroll |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Pete from seven stars link Date: 04 Feb 17 - 10:01 AM We enjoyed the book thief film . It was a budget buy at the supermarket |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Thompson Date: 05 Feb 17 - 03:25 AM While we're recommending books, I'm reading The Last Samurai and laughing like a drain. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: bbc Date: 05 Feb 17 - 07:43 AM I read this book in audio format & loved it, really loved it! Afterward, I saw the movie. I think the movie's worth a look, but things are explained less well, so it's better to read the book, first. Between the two, I would recommend the book! best, bbc |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Mr Red Date: 05 Feb 17 - 08:03 AM Mousetrap apparently the person what dun it, depends on which day/week/year/location you went to see it. My phrase is "the butler dun it" to any discussion on an unseen film. One day I will be right. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Book Thief From: Janie Date: 05 Feb 17 - 08:55 AM Haven't seen the movie. Really enjoyed the book. |
