My nephew filmed this bird in a garden in Italy. I think it's either an unusually musical starling or a blackbird. It's finally visible towards the end of the little video.

Can any Mudcatters tell from its song?

dark bird

That link fails for me. If it works for you, leeneia, perhaps your nephew shared it with you personally, and/or you're signed in to Google.

Ah! You pasted the address into the "blue clicky" thing. But it cannot make links that long and it's truncated.

Try shortening it with TinyURL first.

Or if you use Firefox or Chrome use my Browser Tools which has no limit to the length of the link.

Haven't seen / heard the link but I seem to recall starlings were good mimics -- there was one in our garden at home that copied the sound of a squeaky wheelbarrow!

We had a starling in the garden of our last house that mimicked that Nokia tune.

I couldn't open the link either but you might be able to ID it at allaboutbirds.org. Plenty of bird sounds there.

Bloody starling in our garden has been mimicking a car alarm going off for the last two days!!

Or maybe the nephew sent the film on the 1st ...?

Leenia, post the whole url in black if the other method looks too complicated.

Thanks for all the info. The mystery is solved. The DH enlarged a photograph of it, and it has the distinctive light eye ring of the blackbird.

I once had a starling in my urban yard that was imitating the sound a meadowlark, a bird of farms and fields. It gave me the oddest, disoriented feeling to hear that sound in the wrong environment.

There's a nice iPhone/iPad app called Chirp+ that recognises most western European bird songs.
