It seems UK folks would know about the Jaguar XF six cylinder of 2013-2014. 27K miles. It was the easiest to drive car but do they last very long? We don't drive 1000 miles a year since we rent for trips so fuel economy isn't important,

however I've tried 5 hybrids and plug ins. The new Bolt is like a video game to earn points/miles. 290 miles on one charge wins. It looks like a toy SUV. The Volt is powerful and doesn't need much of a learning curve to drive. But $43 grand is a lot of money so a hybrid Honda for 33 Grand is the next best. Ford sucked and Toyota and Lexus hybrids are also pricey for a battery life of 7 years. They stopped making the Sonata plug in this year. Plug in are electric only and hybrids merely get a boost of EV power to a 4 cylinder engine.

i asked my local garage about getting an electric/hybrid car. they've serviced my car for ages - i trust them.

they said - don't get one - they haven't got them right yet.

These Jags with 25K miles cost about $25K
I'm worried future repairs will also cost a dollar a mile.

Its more nimble with AWD than my old air ride car so I'm not used to even feeling the road. It feels OK.

Seems ironic but new electric cars cost more.
Jags may be too ostentatious and stylishly candy ass but we all can't drive 69 Chargers.

Jags
have historic & iconic appeal,
but also a reputation for inherent design flaws...

I'd like to try one... 😎

Oops, I was lied to by Honda. Hyundai has 2 new hybrids and one plug in car. They have a collaboration with Tesla. Hyundai starts as low as $22K with the Ionica.

I should probably just treat cars like toasters and get another POS, save 15K and sleep in a new hot tub. The reality is, a descent car will probably last longer than my driving vision.

I curse the car centric conflict gods :^O

If you can find a Mercury Bobcat extant anywhere, it would probably sell for a lot less than and Jaguar.

Donuel, I've had a look on Autotrader website in the UK most of the Jags of that age advertised have over 100,000 on the clock, so I shouldn't worry too much about durability. The consumption figures are pretty good for a big car so you probably won't have to hire a car

The mileage is unique but there are low mile Cadillacs with a similar price point.

The Kibosh may have already happened. The slightest Jag braking caused the Missus' seat belt to pre tension and squish the wife with instant mammogram like pressure. She yelled OW and grimaced several times. The event may have us leaning to a 7,600 mile Cadillac. The Jag handles with solid AWD & unsurpassed precision but the Caddy doesn't bite my wife. Maybe the Jag is a 'grabber' with too much 'tude.

We have an oldish Miata, aka Mazda MX5. Soft-top of course. More fun than a barrowload of monkeys, cheap to buy second-hand, reasonable running costs and very reliable. Noisy motorway car but just the job on country roads. I'm not easily made to look cool but that car has a damn good shot at it.

Apart from that, I'm more of a snow-leopard man.

theres a man lives opposite me with a jag. it looks great and drives forever but he reckons mpg can go as low as 12mpg.

in the early 60's my dad had an old humber hawk that only did 18 mpg. it was reckoned the humber supersnipe did only 12mpg. anyway the hawk kept dad poor when petrol was only 1/8d a gallon.

what i'm getting at is that some of these jags have historically low mpg.

even my gi-normous volvo did about 30mog.

Hi Al, I looked at the consumption figures for a 2.2 litre turbo diesel Jag and found that the figures were quite reasonable, even taking into account those figures are not really possibly in day to day driving.

Urban 46.2 mpg
Extra Urban 65.0 mpg
Average 55.4 mpg

For a big car I found that to be quite good.

From: Donuel

That is true Al. Now you have a choice of a four, six or 8 cylinder.
the mileage problem prompted them to add a shut off feature to the engine every time you stop for more than 5 seconds. It gets so quiet at stop lights no one can fart with impunity. When two people are in an elevator you know every one knows who did it.

If I get the Jag I would remove all the rear lettering of make and model and replace with Hyundai or Yugo-royal badges for security&comedy reasons. It looks like it might even be an Acura Asso.

Any suggestions for new badges, how about GM Jedi? BVW 3.14i Beamer ? Ford Flotsam? Lexus Lemona? Nissan Guano PU 2.0 ? Mercedes H-2.0 4 Manic? Toyota Iota?
Honda Hydro gin? Chrysler Christ Allmighty?   Dodge Dilbert?

Nowadays big and small cars look somewhat alike except for supercars and Smartcars.

Gnu
I didn't drive that one because it isn't around here yet.

I didn't buy the Jaguar. It is the perfect car for the 30 year old me.
I went with a AWD Cadillac since it requires no thought of dynamic forces and physics. The Jag could do 35 mph right hand turns but there is no one I want to give a huge dose of adrenaline. So I get a better turning radius and a more intuitive drive without the car shutting off all the time. The racy 2 door coupe has a virtual backseat so I won't feel like a Limo driver anymore.

It is my least favorite color Red but with most of the warrantee left and only 8K miles and a price to entice I feel I did the practical thing

It was the Jaguar Dealership that really made up my mind since they have an unwritten policy of; If you bought it here we will do service, all others piss off!

I can not tell you how rude and dismissive they were. I had 2 appointments with them, the first they canceled after learning they didn't sell the car. The rescheduling went worse. Even the chief mechanic with 36 years experience had a feud with the Dealership the Jag came from. There was no hope of service in town so any airs of practical decision making are moot.

Mechanical reasons for ownership were all over ruled by more organic human reasons. They don't have brochures or websites for that.

Thanks all

PS
No one at the Cadillac dealership knew that Cadillac was an explorer

No it isn't and
Al, no you wouldn't.

I welcome a better path. We inhabit the infrastructure from the past as well as community & city planning.

The problems in shifting over to a new technology are multiple.
1 The reluctance of oil tycoons to give up their monopoly fortune.
2 The new technology can disrupt time and space while altering gravity.
The concept of a wall or a safe would be meaningless in that world.
3 The great forces involved, even if green, could annihilate more than gas would when poorly handled.
4 The inequity between haves and have nots would be far greater than mere yachts helicopters   and jets.
5 A simple navigation mistake could cause premature aging.
6 We are not ready for a new technology of enormous energies under the direction of little old ladies from Pasadena.

We are in the age of Democrats and conservatives. We must work toward the age of Technocrats and Democrats first. Or we could get horses instead of cars and Conestoga Trump wagons instead of trucks. Even trains would be nice.

Maybe someday we might ask, "should I buy a Panther ufo"?

hippie, The sport caddy coupe is not boring, in fact it screams midlife crisis sport car! - with huge tires and a Camaro type engine only quiet. Like a McLaren the Jag could actually get away from you despite looking domesticated. Red lining, drifting and burn outs goes with tattoos and your own refrigerated beer tap. I'm not that guy.

Al, after FDR died , 'home on the range' was virtually the only song they played on the radio for weeks. arrgh
I much prefer living on farms compared to suburbia. Then I would get a new F150, they are great.

In the late 30s / early 40s there was a Czech sports car [Tatra ?]
that was so desirable but deadly at cornering at speed,
that it apparently killed more occupying nazi officers than the Czech resistance...

Now that's a vintage motor to aspire to owning, or at least saluting / applauding...

Coded wife language:
If she says I am on the shuttle, I am to pick her up.
If she says we are on the shuttle, I am to pick up her and friends.

Yesterday she said 'I'. So I show up in a two seater car with the look of 2 fake extra vestigial rear seats. I should have turned around and gotten the old car to accommodate an extra passenger, but no. After we exit the car to move a front seat forward, after 5 minutes we all helped squeeze the equivalent of a 200lb. tuna in the rear bucket seat meant for a 8 year old or small car seat. That was the easy part with gravity on our side. Complicated by a front seat belt the rear seat tuna , try as she might, could not gain leverage to exit the car since there is no internal handle. Being a lovely day her housemates gathered around as they say the emerging predicament. When she got down on one knee on the floor of the car things really went south as she got stuck half backwards. Her hands could not gain purchase due to her 4 bags she had tossed in the back. One leg pinned another and her muscles did not provide reverse leverage. There were muffled rips of unknown clothing. With a monumental burst of energy born of embarrassment   she twisted in such a way that the jaws of life were no longer needed. Leave it to GM to go down roads no one has gone before.

I don't like wine with sulfites. I always figured Teribus for a control freak but I admit I can be horribly or wonderfully wrong about virtual relationships.

Maybe my craving for a two seater car means I don't like people as much as you or I think I do.

To be honest all the mechanical advice were good but the comment about driving all the way up to the Pearly Gates in a boring car, resonated with this atheist. I'm not proud of my selfish streak, besides I have had few things to be selfish about.

From a psychoanalytical POV I still regret talking my dad out of his last desired car. He wanted a Lincoln. His feeling of satisfaction or happiness in fulfilling his desire was probably more important than front wheel vs rear wheel drive.
