IS the action of the President in recent days the actions of a true statesman or a reckless gambler playing brinkmanship? With the stakes so high I think bullying and bluster could backfire dramatically and potentially involve many others. Surely this is a time for talking.

I think we'll find that there are far saner heads in Russia and China, paradoxically. Hopefully, a good few in the US behind Trump too. North Korea is a running sore which is quite likely immune from being talked to, but that shouldn't stop everyone else from trying to agree. So yep, talk.

Trump is simply what he has experience doing.
Deploying really huge bombs helps his favorable polls so he will do more of that. Using nuclear weapons in Korea is next, since he is always true to his word. There is nothing that makes a President stronger than incinerating millions of people and giving the rest running sores.

The Statesmen in the State Dept. have been fired. Instead we have an Exxon drilling lease CEO in charge of Statesmanship.
Brinksmanship is more up to the power behind the throne like Steve Bannon and Alex Jones as well as Trump's military.

As long as we are at war, the legitimacy of Trump will take a cramped rear seat.

He's too capricious and petulant to be a statesman so I would expect that side of the job to be delegated where practical. As for brinksman, business people are often brinksfolk and whilst that's fine when running a business it's not so good when the lives of millions are at stake; then people capable of reflection, reason and who are morally and emotionally mature are needed, and Trump is none of those.

we are living in interesting times.

Many, especially of this parish, had Twitler down as a loose cannon.

And there doesn't seem to be any evidence to the contrary.

When the atom drum bops, we'll all beef hooked.

When the original nuclear scare drifted away, didn't the USA turn to swimming pools instead of nuclear shelters? Time to convert back!

He's a pathological, mentally unstable, egomaniac asshole - and he's dangerous.

Trump has no idea who Teddy Roosevely was, or where San Juam Hill is, just as he had no idea who Harriet Tubman was.

Trump's most salient characteristic is that he does not relate to the truth, either as a concept or as a realistic goal. He has made his mark as a salesman. And what a salesman. If he can convince you with something that might be truthful, he'll go that way, But it's not a conscious decision.
He is a BS-er. He is a smoke blower. It doesn't matter to him if what he says is a lie or not, what matters to him is if you will buy it.

Imagine Berlusconi with less fashion sense and access to nuclear weapons. That's where we are. And if I don't disremember: Berlusconi was elected more than once.

Trump MAY be nefarious or plain stupid. We can not be sure in every case.
What we can be sure of is his irrationality.

I am irrational. I bought a deuce coup instead of a practical passenger car because I am self centered to some degree.

This is an important model in economics.

Trump is now bowing to a respect of the Sunni nations like Egypt and Saudi Arabia by way of aggravating relations with Shia Iran.

The US supreme court is now hearing arguments that the federal government discriminates against Christian churches by denying them federal funds and programs. The fight against separation of church and state means some Christians are arguing for State Religion. You know , just like Iran is a religious state.

If religions pay US taxes I say let them enjoy federal benefits.
Even President Kennedy argued for Catholic schools to receive federal funds.

I say no taxation - no federal help. Or keep the separation of church and state the way our founding fathers intended.
