Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: gillymor Date: 12 May 17 - 03:06 PM Dan, that sounds like a whole lot of fun. I've got to get past some more joint replacements before I can plan any trips but I'll let you know how that goes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: olddude Date: 12 May 17 - 12:54 PM Hey gilly its to late this year but next year why don't you come fishing in alaska with me.. |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: leeneia Date: 12 May 17 - 12:33 AM I think I like the sound of Cajun catfish. Thanks. One of my most vivid early memories comes from Florida, where I had heard other kids talking about how catfish can sting you. A man gave our family a batch of fish from Lake Okochobee, and I begged my mother not to give me any catfish. They were fileted and fried, but I was still afraid of a catfish. Tells you something about how little kids think. I give my mother credit for not saying something dumb like "It can't hurt you!" I was four years old and not ready for logic. |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: gillymor Date: 11 May 17 - 08:56 AM oh and when I do fry catfish I also do okra with it in the same manner (but in a different pan). |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: gillymor Date: 11 May 17 - 08:50 AM Well Dan, I tried cooking Hard Heads once and it didn't go so well. You cut off the heads and tails, gut them and then soak in salted water for 24 hours and it came out kind of bland. Gafftopsails are a different matter, they're a large fish that you can fillet and broil or grill. Pretty good. When I occasionally indulge I get farm-raised catfish from the grocery and sometimes do them Cajun style. Mighty fine. |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: olddude Date: 10 May 17 - 08:58 PM Channel catfish, awesome, blue catfish even better.. All freshwater species. I don't know much about saltwater cats. Gilly is the expert there |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: olddude Date: 10 May 17 - 08:56 PM Catfish with cajun spices awesome.. Neil that was great still laughing |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: gillymor Date: 10 May 17 - 07:11 PM Down here in SW Florida our most common catfish in the salt and brackish waters is the Hard Head and they've got spines that are mildy poisonous on their dorsal and pectoral fins and can give you a hellacious sting. We've got a special way to grasp them from the belly side to keep from getting stung but now and then you hear about someone who gets stung right through their shoe while kicking them back into the water. I don't eat fried foods very often but catfish rolled in a light breading and fried in very hot oil is my favorite way to cook it. I use finely crushed cracker crumbs or cornflake crumbs for the breading and I much prefer farmed catfish to wild which can taste kind of muddy sometimes. |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: leeneia Date: 10 May 17 - 04:55 PM Maybe I should try eating some catfish. What's the best way to cook it? |

Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: leeneia Date: 10 May 17 - 01:47 AM I was just reading Science News and I learned that certain catfishes have venom, usually in the pectoral fins. Do you ever have to worry about that when you catch a catfish? All my life I thought that catfish had a bad rep just because their feelers look threatening. Now I'm glad I never picked one up to pet it. |

Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: gnu Date: 06 May 17 - 10:38 AM Hahahaa! How did I know it was Dan that started this thread? Obvious. I have fished while standing in the box of my truck at the edge of a beaver dam. A big beaver dam. Scares the trout away from the deep water when you stand on the crest in the midday sun. |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: Dave the Gnome Date: 06 May 17 - 10:32 AM The only automobiles I've caught are Barracudas and Stingrays. What about a motor pike and side carp? :D tG |

Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: gillymor Date: 05 May 17 - 07:18 PM Dan, you're a disgrace to the fishing community. You should be stripped of your beer cozy and have your bamboo rod broken half in 2. What's next, you gonna stock your bathtub with trout and fish while seated on the commode? |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: Greg F. Date: 05 May 17 - 06:24 PM Not fair, Dan - I have to run the gauntlet of the !*#%** deer ticks to get anywhere near the streams here. |
Subject: RE: BS: Truck fishing From: leeneia Date: 05 May 17 - 06:18 PM Isn't there a song about filling the back of the pickup with water and fishing in it? |

Subject: BS: Truck fishing From: olddude Date: 05 May 17 - 01:03 PM Raining like crazy, I wanted to fish so I drove my truck to the lake rolled down the window, stuck my pole out and caught a catfish. Reeled him into the truck.. Lol If you fish from a truck window, you may be a redneck... |
