Hi - if there's already an active thread on a song, please don't start another. Having two active threads on one subject at the same time is just too confusing. Ordinarily I would combine the threads, but I can't do that on my phone.

For the sheet music, I do a search on Google on the name of the song with the words "sheet music" after it, and then click the image search button, e.g.

"Popeye the sailor man sheet music"

Here is pages 1 & 2 of the original sheet music:

For ABC files I first do a similar Google web search for
"Popeye the sailor man abc notation" but in this case nothing came up, so my second trick is to do a search for midi files of the song:

"Popeye the sailor man midi"

and then use a free music notation programme e.g. Noteworthy Composer to isolate the melody line from the midi, if necessary, and then save the midi file and use a midi to ABC converter online to convert it to ABC.

It's a lot easier for me to just read it from the sheet music so I don't bother with all that mucking about as soon as I have found the sheet music.

Be careful because the Popeye theme tune is not the same as Popeye the Sailor Man. If you just want the theme tune it is also known as Sailor's Hornpipe:

I think Helen was describing how to do a google search, then helped by giving you an example of one of the links she found. That isn't her actual sheet music so she can't load pg 3&4.

I suggest you listen to the YouTube and work out the notes of the few bars still required. It'll be a good learning experience.

That's funny Freddy. I was thinking about that same quote about giving a man a fish.

And Gargoyle, my thoughts exactly! As an ex-teacher and an ex-librarian I have an ethical principle about not doing other people's homework for them. I'll point them in the direction of the resources, show them how to use them and answer explanatory questions if needed, and stand aside while they do the work themselves.

I think that most of the tune was on the image of the sheet music I posted anyway.

The theme from Popeye the Sailor Man quotes melodic fragments from The Sailor's Hornpipe, but overall it is a distinct tune.
