Subject: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 13 Jun 17 - 07:05 AM So Puerto Rico have voted that they want to become the 51st state of the union: Telegraph So, How's the flag going? Six lines alternating 8/9 stars? |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Dave the Gnome Date: 13 Jun 17 - 07:06 AM I thought we already had that status here in the UK? :D tG |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Mrrzy Date: 13 Jun 17 - 11:07 AM I was wondering about the flag... Also the folks who want DC to be a state are missing the point. |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Jack Campin Date: 13 Jun 17 - 12:43 PM Why not make everybody happy - make DC a state and move the capital to San Juan? |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 14 Jun 17 - 04:37 AM If you add in DC as well that could be 52 states. 4 lines of 13 stars seems a little unwieldy. Maybe 8 lines alternating 6 & 7 stars? |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Donuel Date: 14 Jun 17 - 06:53 AM Its not up to PR, its up to Congress. So its as good as dead since we would have to assume PR's debt DC has the same chance of being a State as Trump for a Nobel Prize. |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Joe Offer Date: 14 Jun 17 - 07:23 AM Why shouldn't DC become a state? It has a population similar to Vermont and Wyoming, the two smallest states. Oh, right. If DC were a state, we'd have two more Democrats in the Senate. I wonder, though, if it might be an idea to cede DC back to Maryland so DC residents would have representation. The reasons for making DC separate in the first place, are no longer valid. As for Puerto Rico, I'd have no objections unless objections to statehood are strong among residents of Puerto Rico.br> -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Nigel Parsons Date: 14 Jun 17 - 08:16 AM Joe, I'd guess there are not strong objections in Puerto Rico, as they've just had a referendum in favour of becoming a member state (although on a low turnout) Cheers |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Donuel Date: 14 Jun 17 - 09:06 AM The reason is that Republicans feel it would be an all democratic State They also are able to abolish DC laws and make their own for DC A Republican Congress will never allow change. |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Donuel Date: 14 Jun 17 - 11:52 AM There is an obscure law that would allow Texas to become as many as 5 states. Shhh... |
Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: robomatic Date: 14 Jun 17 - 02:50 PM As an Alaskan I harbor the proud statement that we could divide our State in halves and so make Texas the third largest state. . . Oft-times I've heard the parlor story that Texas could subdivide into four additional states and so allow the Replicants additional control of the rightist political agenda. This always seemed dumb to me because there are plenty of leftists left in Texas. So I figured the tale of multiple mini-Texases was a line of BS. When Don'l dredged it up I became positive. So I looked it up: Turns out to be partly true. Texas was admitted to the Union during that historical period when slavery was being practiced under law. There were fears that political shenanigans could subvert the Missouri Compromise so some verbiage was added to the annexation documents. Besides, Texans do not want to give up their status of being the 'biggest' of the Lower 48. Since that time period, Texas tried to drop out of the United States and was restrained by force from letting that happen. So the point is currently moot. |

Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: robomatic Date: 14 Jun 17 - 08:36 PM LOL Donuel- Homer Simpson said you couldn't be too fat or too drunk to live in Alaska. And we have two Walmarts and a Target in midtown Anchorage alone. |

Subject: RE: BS: Puerto Rico - 51st State? From: Joe Offer Date: 16 Jun 17 - 02:49 AM Some poll may say that Puerto Rico wants statehood, but is that really so? Over the years, the independence movement there has been quite strong. |
