3 Then Jesus told them this parable: 4 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? 5 And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6 and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, 'Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.' 7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

It rather depends upon what the lost sheep is carrying in its pockets or in its mind. Better safe than sorry springs to mind. A long incarceration while being debriefed perhaps?

I always had problems with that one. What happens if after he's left the 99 one or more stray, or are stolen, or are killed by wolves?

If 'we' know who and where he is... how come he's still breathing....???

On the other hand, to take a figure like that and genuinely 'turn' him;
for him to show sincere repentance and desire for redemption..

How useful could that kind of propaganda tool be in combating home grown potential extremists...???

Sounds like the start of a Nursery Rhyme:

"Jihadi Jack wants to come back
Jihadi John wants to stay on..."

Oooh! The Equals!! I used to really fancy them back in the late 1960's.

What about 'Hit The Road Jack' (and don't you come back no more no more no more no more...)

In my village they enacted their own version of the sheep parable in Victorian times. Dobbs the shepherd realised to his horror that he had lost one of the sheep he was tending. The inevitable outcome would be execution or transportation as a thief, so he hanged himself first.

He was buried in unconsecrated ground at a crossroads, where his grave can still be seen, now neatly tended and with the later addition of a headstone. The road was later renamed as Dobbs' Lane.

From what I can gather, this lad rather naively 'wanted to help the unfortunate' in Syria, converted to Islam in an idealistic fashion and dropped out of his studies. I'm not certain whether that constitutes terrorism, or even if he has actually broken UK law. He sent an SOS to his parents requesting a money transfer, and after they complied, they were interrogated by Police here for 'helping a terrorist'.

Now I'm not a parent but I imagine anyone's mum and dad would be concerned by their son's need for funds and would try to help him.
His father is 'an organic farmer', in no way connected to Islamic factions.

I would hesitate to bar the lad from coming home until further information is obtained. In any case, is there actually a Law, enacted by Parliament, that expressly forbids a UK citizen from re-entering the country? If so, under what specific conditions?

Dunno why you have problems with it, Nigel. It's a parable, not a true story, intended to make a point. The point being that your humanity dictates that you don't give up on a lost sheep even if it means taking a bit of a risk with the 99 others. People jump into dangerous seas to rescue an unrelated child even though they have a family of their own. It's a tale of humanity, not of counting numbers. Having said that, Jesus didn't half talk bollocks at times. All that guff about giving all your stuff away, not worrying about tomorrow and turning the other cheek. Tsk. I'll be charitable to the bearded besandalled one and surmise that those idiotic evangelists made it all up.

if he can't produce a passport?

If he himself is in a quandary, between his current circumstances and the prospect of prison?

If he can't produce a passport because it's been lost during his 'adventures', then he can still be repatriated. It wouldn't be the first time a passport has been lost by a Brit abroad.

And why should he be threatened with prison on his return? I don't quite understand. What crime has he committed? (Serious question, I'm a bit confused. Has he actually undertaken terrorist activities?) I suppose he could legitimately be detained while investigations are made as to his actions. But travelling to another country, even Syria, after becoming a Muslim aren't of themselves crimes.

I believe a british born British Citizen cannot have their nationality revoked. That is not to say they cannot be arrested on their return and sent to trial if suspected of terrorist offences.
I think he is of an age where he knew full well the potential consequences of his actions. Also his present quandary is more about the fact he is in a Syrian jail on the basis of being a member of Isis.
When he solves that minor predicament he can worry about the possibility of further jail time in the UK.
Even a 7 year old can appreciate that actions have consequences.

' ADVENTURES ' for fucks sake Senoufou, he wanted to murder non believers, oh but wait a minute, perhaps that lad in Manchester was just on an adventure night out when he bombed a theatre that was teeming with young people and children, and that person who drove a truck on London Bridge killing innocent people could have been on an adventure driving course, ! get real.

killing innocent people

Rather like Bush, Blair & Co, to the tune of multiple thousands in Iraq, perhaps?

If he really is a Jihadi then he certainly should not be accepted back into the UK, Dave H is absolutely correct, if not "politically correct".
I cant believe that this is even being discussed so close to the deaths of UK citizens at the hands of these psychopaths.
