Subject: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Jack Campin Date: 04 Jul 17 - 01:57 PM I can see a lot of Americans using this to make a point.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-40494102 Good design. Unfussy, not too loud, memorable, and honestly acquired. Meanwhile from the Trump side: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-40097665 Hard to imagine why he even wanted to steal it, but then a lot of things about Trump are hard to imagine. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Stilly River Sage Date: 04 Jul 17 - 02:40 PM Nice gesture toward Obama. Trump seems to appropriate, short change, declare bankruptcy, and lie about anything to get his way. Along with the the purloined coat of arms, he doesn't use his original family name. Snopes says "The surname of Donald Trump's family was originally "Drumpf." It appears that his grandfather's name was Friedrich Drumpf when he came to the United States in 1885, and there is debate about when and how (informal) it was changed. There are several accounts. http://www.snopes.com/donald-drumpf/. He didn't change it himself - he is selective in what he uses, or doesn't. Drumpf (sounds too close to Dump?) is probably an equivalent of being saddled with the name Kuntz or Butts, though not as bad as Hitler. Not sure where this is going, just making an observation at this point. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: robomatic Date: 04 Jul 17 - 02:54 PM That is one of the neatest gifts anyone could ever receive and thanks for bringing it to the forum. GRAND! Gave me a July 4th size grin. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Senoufou Date: 04 Jul 17 - 03:07 PM I think it's a very nice tartan. Quite classy in fact. McObama! When we were up in Edinburgh a couple of years ago, we saw the shop where they design a tartan for you. (Just a touristy thing) My husband wanted one, in very bright colours. He's a Senoufo, so I suppose it could have been MacSenoufo. Or Mc... his actual surname (think unpronounceable African name) But when I suggested he could have a kilt made, he doubled over laughing. Like Obama, he thinks his knees are too knobbly. We settled for a scarf. I'm entitled to a tartan, being of clan Mackay. It's a nice dark green, blue and black one. Our motto is 'Manu forti' (with a strong hand) and the clan badge has a clenched fist holding a large dagger. So beware! :) |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: ChanteyLass Date: 04 Jul 17 - 03:35 PM I like the Obama tartan. When I visited Scotland, I fell in love with the Buchanan Modern tartan and bought a shawl and tam. I later purchased a Buchanan cape, scarf, and shirt. I don't know if I have any Buchanan ancestors, but after I bought the shawl and tam I taught a class that included a student whose name was Buchanan. He was delighted when I showed him my shawl and tam. His parents had passed away and he was being raised by his older sister and her husband, so he was the only member of that household still using the Buchanan name. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: keberoxu Date: 04 Jul 17 - 04:07 PM Remember when the Pope visited Scotland, and they came up with a tartan? In honor of St. Ninian, I believe. I saw an image -- lovely colors. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Jack Campin Date: 04 Jul 17 - 07:26 PM If if mean JP2's visit (was there a later one?) it was about as enthusiastic as Trump's inauguration. I walked through Princes Street in Edinburgh just before he was due to drive along it and there were only a handful of bored-looking people listlessly holding flags. (I still have one of the commemorative scarves - I use it as a flute cleaning rag). |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: leeneia Date: 05 Jul 17 - 12:20 AM Who is JP2? That Trump 'coat of arms' is just pathetic. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: akenaton Date: 05 Jul 17 - 02:32 AM Unlike President Barak, Donal John has a genuine tartan of his own through his mother Mary Anne. There are several variants which can be viewed here "Hi rum ho for Donal John." |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Senoufou Date: 05 Jul 17 - 03:43 AM I believe JP2 is Pope John Paul the Second. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: gillymor Date: 05 Jul 17 - 06:53 AM Interesting that Donal Joke replaced "Integrity" on his purloined coat of arms with it's exact opposite, "Trump". |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Senoufou Date: 05 Jul 17 - 07:38 AM Exactly gillymor. What a joke that would be, Integrity! |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Greg F. Date: 05 Jul 17 - 10:30 AM Hard to imagine why he even wanted to steal it Drumpf would steal anything that wasn't firmly nailed down - he's done it all his life. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: leeneia Date: 05 Jul 17 - 10:45 AM Thank you, Senoufou, for the explanation. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: akenaton Date: 05 Jul 17 - 10:58 AM MacLeod history, right up to present day America. Here |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Greg F. Date: 05 Jul 17 - 08:12 PM Trump has a genuine tartan of his own through his mother Mary Anne. Is that the mother who, along with her husband, wouldn't rent to Black folks? All Scots must be chuffed. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: keberoxu Date: 05 Jul 17 - 08:26 PM Reply to Jack Campin: remember the pope who fancied red shoes? He wasn't in very long, but it was relatively recent -- between John Paul II and Francis. Still alive, but left the post. The St. Ninian Tartan was in honor of his visit to Scotland. By the way, that visit was a very big deal to a community on the island of Papa Stronsay. The monks were welcomed back into the Roman church; they were amongst the ultra-traditional groups who took Vatican II poorly. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: keberoxu Date: 05 Jul 17 - 08:31 PM And did you know that a fund-raising tartan has been produced by Alzheimer Scotland as "The World's First Alzheimer's Tartan' (Ingles Buchan) |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Donuel Date: 05 Jul 17 - 11:51 PM The purloined coat of arms has an elbow attached the skull. It makes me wonder if they knew their ass from their elbow. I think my graphic version of the trump coat of arms has a lot more to say with an escalator, fake gold, the grabbing hand and The Tweet Button. Instead of lots of lion heads, there are lots of dead elephants with Ivanka merchandise scattered about. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Mrrzy Date: 06 Jul 17 - 11:00 AM I thought O'bama's ancestry on the white side was Irish? Am I confused? |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Senoufou Date: 06 Jul 17 - 11:41 AM You're right Mrrzy. His great great great grandfather was a Kearney from County Offaly (part of Leinster) He emigrated to USA. |
Subject: RE: BS: Offical Obama tartan From: Jack Campin Date: 06 Jul 17 - 01:51 PM The tartan registry will accept sensible designs for people or organizations they approve of regardless of ancestry. |
