I don't think 'happy' is the operative word. Many, if not most, of them are sad and dissatisfied with life, and finding someone else to blame and/or hate is a classic response.

The headline is misleading because:

"The cross-cultural study included some 2,300 university students from the United States, Brazil, China, Germany, Ghana, Israel, Poland and Singapore."

Think about all the factors that can keep a student from normal life and from living a full emotional life. such as

hard studying
not enough sleep
debt
having to work and go to school
worry about getting a good job after school
possible non-acceptance by peers
drugs

By the time I was a senior in college, I wanted only one thing in life - sleep.

It may make you feel relieved or resolved to "feel" your anger or your righteousness. It should not be confused with the kind of happiness that comes from right action and well-chosen survival actions.

Greg, as I have never listened to anything Mr Duke has said or even seen him on TV, I have no interest in him.

If he is a spokesman for the KKK I do not support him or his organisation.

On political violence, President Donal-John is correct to point out the excesses of right and left. Political violence should be outlawed.

A recent BBC2 programme The Secrets of Silicon Valley concentrated on Fakebook et al, and one expert on manipulation commented:
"we react to news that has impact" - positive or negative. ie Sensationalism spreads.
Nice news makes us feel warm inside, but is not sufficient to make us disseminate it.

Another aspect is something I learned years ago to my cost, in sales blurb. If it is on a printed page we treat it with more credibility than if it is verbal. Farcebook (aka Fakebook) we believe more because it is written and it is our friends writing (who couldn't possibly get it wrong).

Of course impact is highly dependent on our pecadillos. Hence the cat videos, and cranes falling into the harbour. And religions like politics.
