Brad Kieserman, who is coordinating disaster relief efforts in Texas for the Red Cross, said the destruction is "overwhelming."

Kieserman said Harvey has turned Southeast Texas into "an inland lake the size of Lake Michigan," and the greatest challenge right now is that workers can't get around because of the floodwaters.

"The situation feels, I think, as well managed as any situation like this could be," he told NPR on Monday. "I mean, the very definition of catastrophe is when the very capability and capacity you need to respond has been destroyed or deeply affected by the thing you're responding to, and that's what's happened here. Everyone who is involved in this response is coordinating and cooperating, but it is overwhelming."

The population of the greater Houston area is over 5 million.

Donuel; Meetings at NIH have discussed a need to respond to eventual outbreaks of cholera caused from any flood sewerage water getting in children's mouths.

The big flood from reservoirs is just now beginning. I have seen police and neighbors helping neighbors but no sign of the National Guard or big equipment.

Trump needs to release gas reserves and mobilize means to save millions. 14 helicopters just isn't doing the trick. There is the possibility that there is no hope for some of the millions of people who did as they were told and stayed put.

Mega Churches of Joel Ornstein have locked out survivors seeking shelter from the rain. I too have an urge to turn away but this humanitarian disaster demands help from a power higher than a visit by Donald.

In a month, perhaps this challenge will begin to look like our proudest hour.

Red Cross? Didn't they accept donations destined for Haiti after an earthquake or flood, and then diverted some or much of the money? I have reservations about them.

But I would like to know what I can reasonably do, which cause or organization is honest and effective. Anyone? It is truly cataclysmic.

Saul

Yeah, of all the groups, don't give the Red Cross anything. Give to the local efforts. Or, wait a month and give to the cleanup, when everybody else is onto something else. And, give blood where you are.

Anyone seen the pix of Obama on the soup line?   Now that's presidential.

Too big to save. You *can't* evacuate 13 million people.

Texas Tribune article about a new law the GOP controlled Texas state legislature voted into being this year. Goes into effect Sept. 1.

Well played, business interests and insurance companies. Your lobbyists did you proud.

I don't know. There are the worst of humanity who take advantage in crises.

I have seen 2 survivors that tearfully reported of families with children who were swept away before their eyes. I have also seen two National guard trucks and a handful of soldiers helping people who arrive by small citizen boats. Avoiding panic is a concern so the truth is not the first concern by authorities. Media has scant fw places to set up so the view is really skewed. Is their good Twitter coverage?

The rescues I have watched on CNN and MSNBC are mostly of the lucky and low hanging fruit. FOX news has Karl Rove carping about negative reporting and all the great people in charge.

The response by the police has been monumental. Thanks go out to all those who had their own bass boat with plastic coolers.

Thank you Yashta, I knew there must have been a catch to insurance companies announcing deadlines.

The two big 100 foot high earthen reservoirs are overflowing right now in Houston as the rain continues. There will be no receding of the flood heights for at least 2 more days.

behind the scenes the GOP has presented a bill do defund the Mueller investigation. sneaky weasels.

btw - if a Trump government shutdown occurs relief efforts DO suffer.
Needless to say do not believe Trump even if he brings the rays of sunshine back and parts the waters.

All hail to the private Caygun navy.

The 8 billion dollar James Webb telescope happens to be in South Houston for vacuum testing.

Outside the Johnson Space center the Caygun navy is in full rescue mode. It consists of Kayaks pulling rafts or inflatable toys, powered bass boats or taller speed boats. Then there are the inflatable kiddie pools pulled by people in water above their waist.

The lessons must be learned.
New Orleans, New Jersey, New York, Galveston
cities that build near or below sea level are at risk from rising temperatures/seas.

Plans must be put in place, yea, yea, they cost a lot of money for events that haven't happened yet (but they will).

In the UK we are pretty complacent, none more than London. It can't happen there - the universe revolves around it fer gawd's sake!

(thinks, why the Thames Barrier? and when to make it higher?)

Mr Red,
The Thames Barrier (as I understand it)serves the same purpose as the Cardiff Bay Barrage. The Cardiff version was built to prevent future flooding by managing the water levels in the three rivers flowing through Cardiff to the Bristol Channel (The Taff The Ely & The Rhymney)
Previous flooding (described as "once in a hundred years")happened in 1979 & 1960. In each case the cause was an unusual combination of heavy rainfall in South Wales (putting the three rivers in spate), a high tide in the Bristol Channel, and strong onshore winds, raising the tide level & holding back the water in the rivers.
By creating a barrage, the Cardiff Bay marina was formed where a suitable level of water can be maintained. The height of the barrage prevents the high tide from forcing its way into the three rivers when their flow is high, and allows the surplus water from the rivers to be released at low tide into the Bristol Channel.

"cities that build near or below sea level are at risk from rising temperatures/seas."
They are also at risk from storm surges and tsunamis. Hull subjected to storm surges in 1953 and 2013 for example. Or the Severn estuary inundation of 1607. Had the flooding occurred on this scale when all three reactors were operational(Hinkley,Berkley, Oldbury) along the Severn and it's estuary the outcome could have been messy. In the 90's the seismic hazard group were aware of the risk but I have no idea how seriously it was pursued at that point. In Lincolnshire two refineries are close by Immingham Docks, all three sites are at risk of flooding.
These sort of risks repeat all around coastal areas wordlwide, both people and infrastructure are increasingly vulnerable. In a warmer world storms intensify
